David Wright was double-switched out of the game

Terry Collins double-switched David Wright out of the game during the eighth inning of Thursday night’s loss to the Cubs.

Jenrry Mejia entered to pitch in the bottom of the inning and Eric Campbell moved to third base.

“I don’t know,” Wright said, when asked about the switch. “I’m not the manager.”

Wright appeared irritated with the decision. However, he took some responsibility and said that if he hadn’t made the last out of the previous inning, he may have been left in the game.

“I only had one guy left on the bench,” Collins explained. “I wanted to try to keep Duda in the game. So I just told David, ‘Look, I’ve got to put the pitcher in your spot.’ He understands. He’s a pro.”

Collins has no idea what he is doing. Get rid of him.

It was a very odd move.  I can't remember the last time a field captain was double switched out of a game like that.

Let's trade Wright for a PTBNL that might be good in 2017.

It must be very depressing to be a starting pitcher for the Mets...they probably know they will lose before the first pitch is thrown!

The backman train left a long time ago. It's not Terry Collins. It's guys like Grandy C Young all their SS and catchers batting 230. They need real veteran talent with the young guys. If their pitching wasn't so solid they'd be 20 games under

Time for Wally Backman.  Terry Collins does not have what it takes to make these guys winners.

David is a credit to the team AND the game!  What an insult to take him out.  And when we at home could see that it was a double play, why did he not challenge it and stand behind his team.

Wally Backman is a fighter. He fights for his players and his teams win!  Wally Backman now! Before this season is well and truly gone.  Come on, at the very least, it would give us fans something to cheer about. Terry colllins has not been able to do that...how many years are we willing to let him try and fail!?!?!

That's not why we lost to the lowly Cubs.

Mr. Clutch got taken out? Too bad they didn't double switch Collins out.

He could have swapped Young and DenDekker - either way, he had only one player left on the bench if they had managed to tie it up and go to extra innings.  TC did it for a reason - not to make Wright take a step back but to create a dramatic distraction for the fans and the press.  More typical Mets dysfunction.

He wanted to keep Duda in and take Wright out ?

Nobody including David should be guaranteed to play when they are not hitting. TC's job is to win games and not worry about hurting a player's feeling. For whatever the reason, we always seem to play lousy ball against the bottom rung teams.

Wright's day off should be today, I hope. Granderson could probably use one himself.

All this did was remove the opportunity for David to rack up yet another of his trademark 9th-inning strikeouts.

Wright went 0-5 in yesterdays game. I would have switched him out also.

What is Wrights contract?

Forget about Wright. He's not a superstar but he's the best player on a team with an anemic lineup. Most of those starting should be backups. Sandy has done an awful job filling holes with the limited finds he has available. He somehow managed to trade our best outfielder (Torres) for 2 essentially worthless players. He signed a bunch of stiffs like Marcum, FF, CY and Valverde.

We are so far away from competing it's ridiculous. Normally, one might have hope that we can trade some young pitching for some hitters but I doubt it will happen. Why not? Because the one constant we have in the Sandy era is that payroll will stay low and we will drop further and further behind the other teams. You are dreaming if you think guys like Montero or Wheeler will be traded for a proven hitter. There is no shot we are going to add another 15-20MM to this payroll.

We Mets fans are unfortunately totally screwed.

Hate to point out the obvious but baseball is a team sport where the best of the best fail 7 out of 10 times.  Every error and every failure of Wright's are magnified ten fold because of his "face of franchise label" and the fact that the rest of the team is a bunch of no names and retreads.

Among NL third baseman, Wright is third in RBIs.  McGehee from Marlins has 37 with only 1 HR. He bats BEHIND Stanton and the Marlins are tearing it up.  Longoria, who many believe is far better than Wright, has 24 RBI and 6 HR - 54 strike outs. The Rays, if I'm not mistaken, are about as bad as the Mets. Wright still ranks 2nd in the NL with 72 hits - one behind Goldschimdt/Murphy.

I'm not disagreeing that he hasn't seemed himself thus far and absolutely looks like he needs a break but again, he isn't 23 anymore and at 31 both he and Collins need to come to some agreement about managing his playing time for optimal success.  It never should have gotten to this point.

Anyway despite the fact that  responded to this topic myself (multiple times)...I don't think there is that much of a story here.  Players shouldn't be happy about coming out of the game, you should want them to want to play.

Wright didn't really say anything bad here (though some here probably would view him bashing TC as a good thing...not a bad one).  He's was asked about the decision and said he's not the manager...i.e. not the one who made the decision.  And as alluded to in the post he also said "Again, I don’t make the decisions. I guess the way to answer that is you don’t make the last out of the inning, you don’t get double-switched for.”

first off, i an a David Wright fan...but, his ABs lately have been awful..plus, he already has 60 SOs in 1/3 of a season..on pace for 180..his career SO ratio is around what "all or nothing" Dave Kingman was..at least Kingman hit 40 HRs per year..Wright needs a break and it's about time he stops getting coddled

DAVID WRIGHT IS THE ONLY PLAYER ON THIS DAMN TEAM THAT HAS EARNED IT.........TERRY COLLINS, IF YOU THINK IT'S BAD NOW WAIT TIL AUGUST WHEN YOUR SEEING 5,OOO FANS IN THE STADIUM. YOU COULD NOT WIN A SINGLE GAME VS THE MISERABLE CHICAGO CUBS.....

melmet

AND ANOTHER THING MR "FACE OF THE FRANCHISE'....TRY CATCHING THE BALL!!!...YOU LOST 2 OF THESE GAMES YOURSELF WITH YOUR GARBAGE FIELDING...ASIDE FROM THE FACT THAT YOU HAVEN'T HAD A CLUTCH HIT SINCE HIGH SCHOOL....HEY DAVID...COULD I BORROW SOME OF THAT  20 MILLION A YEAR YOU'LL BE MAKING FOR THE NEXT 7 YEARS......BOOO HOOO

i don't understand where all this animosity towards David Wright is coming from. Just looking at his statistics, he is the 7th best 3rd baseman in the NL by WAR on ESPN, better than Prado, Zimmerman, Headley, Aramis Ramirez. 6th best OPS in NL. His average was as high as .304 just a week ago. And he's played with no rest and no excuses this whole season.

If you asked me who I had more faith in between David Wright or Terry Collins, I know what my answer would be.

I was ok with the double switch. Wright will continue to struggle until he has a real clean up hit behind him. Grandy n duda are not 4 hole hitters. I honestly believe that wright isn't a 3hole hitter either. To me he fits as 5/6 hole hitter like when Beltran, Delgado and Floyd where here.

Being a Mets fan since 1984, this franchise reminds me of watching the Indiana Jones movie series:

1980s Mets (Raiders of the Lost Ark): Exciting, ambitious, full of attitude and, ultimately, victories. Great leading actors (Straw, Gooden, Hernandez), and an evil empire to contend with (St Louis). The rolling boulder, in this instance, was this team's drug and alcohol addiction.

1990s Mets (Temple of Doom): Huge dropoff, but not a total train wreck despite horrible casting decisions, with a solid ending. Ultimately, in '99 -- like the movie -- our heart got ripped out by the Braves.

2000s Mets (Last Crusade): Return, somewhat, to the standards of the original ... and just when you thought it would equal the original ... it fell short. Wilpons buy the remaining 50% of the Mets, and this betrayal -- like that German chick in the movie -- will haunt us for a while. Mets give Oliver Perez a huge extension ... and, well, they "chose poorly."

2010s Mets (Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) ... Ummm ... what the hell is this???? Enter Shia "Terry" Lebeouf and a cast few will remember in a matter of years, and well ... it's a train wreck. The only thing keeping viewers watching is a scant loyalty to a once charming brand.

Who cares? It was the 8th inning and David was not due up in the 9th. Lets be more concerned that the Mets just got swept by the Cubs and not how David had to sit out an inning.

HEY TERRY HOW DARE YOU INSULT THE "FACE OF THE FRANCHISE".....AFTER ALL WE NEED TO PAMPER OUR 20 MILLION DOLLAR A YEAR LOSER....OR HE MIGHT GET UPSET..AND MAYBE HE MIGHT GET ONE SINGLE DAMN CLUTCH HIT IN HIS ENTIRE CAREER.......MAYBE...IM STILL WAITING FOR THE 1ST ONE. WE NEED RAUL IBANEZ TO SHOW THE "FACE OF THE FRANCHISE" HOW TO WIN GAMES FOR THE TEAM!!!!!

@Jimmy Nyk Allday Wright was a better hitter than Beltran pretty much every year since Wright's first full year.  Beltran was better in 2006, 2009, and 2011.. all the other years Wright (2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013) has been the better hitter.  They do miss Beltran's bat but he wasn't going to re-sign here anyway

@Jimmy Nyk Allday jimmy you are smarter than this, beltran was not coming back after the season thats why they traded him

Well...he's had a "bad" year by his standards in that he's hit for very little power but that about the only complaint.

Of all the issues yesterday, double switching out Wright is the least of my worries.

vandelay
vandelay

@metsys He has not been good this season.  OBP and power are way down from his career norms....and his strikeouts are way up from where they were the last couple years.   I think criticizing his season thus far is fair.

People criticizing his entire career or what he's done in the prior couple seasons are ridiculous however.  He's had a great career...and was one of the top players in the game over the prior couple seasons

Cheryl Ann

@oldrockingguy @Cheryl Ann Thanks -  me too. I just think that Terry should have had the sense to realize this move would raise eyebrows and cause the press sharks to follow the trail of blood.  Maybe he was actually trying to create some dramatic distraction so no one would be focusing on the team's performance or asking him about his job security. Like Ojeda and Keith, David seems to take issue with Collins' constant use of excuses. He came right out and said he was tired of hearing excused about being tired. Who was he talking about - Collins is the only one who has mentioned any such thing - it hasn't been the players. There is a disconnect here and believe me, eventually a press blogger is going to start creeping around corners to get the inside scoop.

7 out of 15 man even the fan base is settling for mediocrity this is getting very sad very quick

@vandelay agreed, not having the best season, but that is relative to his prior (stellar) seasons. In addition I think we can all agree this is probably one of the worse lineups he's been in so far in his career.

melmet

@vandelay @melmet HEY VANDELAY...I bet I've been watching much much much longer than you have.....if you think DAVID WRIGHT is a clutch hitter ...YOU ARE CLUELESS AS TO WHAT THAT EVEN MEANS.....if you want to know about clutch....see mike piazza .....gary carter....ray knight...robin ventura...keith hernandez...NOT THIS VASTLY OVERPAID LOSER DAVID WRIGHT .....who puts up big numbers for his own stats....BUT HAS NEVER EVER WON ANYTHING...INCLUDING THE FAMOUS MET CHOKES OF '07 AND '08 WHERE HE BATTED 3RD AND NEVER CAME THROUGH...JUST LIKE NOW!....IF THE TRUTH HURTS ..THATS NOT MY PROBLEM.
