In the 13th inning of last night’s 4-3 loss to the Marlins, David Wright appeared as a pinch hitter but struck out against Jon Rauch.
Wright volunteered to pinch hit because the team needed a bat in that situation.
“We kind of ran out of options,” Wright said, according to ESPN New York. “I played through it [on Sunday].”
Wright is unsure he will be able to play tonight, but is confident the treatment he is receiving on his stiff neck is working, given his ability to hit last night.
“I would say it’s better now than it was when I woke up this morning, which is a good thing,” Wright continued. “So I think the treatment that I got on it during the day helped and was beneficial. I’ll wake up tomorrow and see how it feels. I’d like to play as soon as possible, so we’ll see.”
Michael Baron, ContributorWright often plays through pain he never even mentions, so for him to bring this kink in his neck to the team’s attention means he really is in some discomfort. Still, while Wright didn’t produce in his spot last night, he took one for the team knowing full well he wasn’t feeling good physically. He is this team’s leader, and his move last night should serve as a reminder for his teammates what they’re there to do, even if they aren’t at their best on any given day.
