David Wright contemplates his at-bat 1sg

David Wright expected better, but still has faith

David Wright expected the Mets to get off to a better start this season, “but with injuries, and poor play, we put ourselves in this position,” he told columnist Andy Martino (Daily News, June 20).

“I think that the decision to develop from within, to keep on those young pitchers for another year, to see what you have and see what’s going to be a part of the solution, and who you might use to go out there and add another piece, was the correct one,” he said of the front office’s decision to keep payroll around $85 million. “I think that as much as we’re trying to win games, and obviously that’s the number one goal, there needs to be an evaluation period to see what we have with these young players, both pitchers and position players.”

In the end, Wright said, he still has faith Sandy Alderson can turn to the team around.

However, he added, “We all need to look ourselves in the mirror and say, we need to improve as a team. Whether that’s from within, through trades, or through free agency, there is always more to be done.”

Please stop the David Wright pitty party, DW needs to step up and hit like a $100 million man, if he cant hit 30 hrs because of the ballpark excuse then lead the league in hitting like Reyes did a few years back and also he can lead the league in doubles which may not be as sexy as a HR but still brings value and a ton of RBIs to your team. I like DW, he is good quality guy but $100+ million guys need to bring you alot more value then DW is right now for this club, Mets could have gotten a Bautista or Encarcion through trading some pitchers in the off season or Cruz, Abreu through free agency, anyone of the 4 would be leading the Mets in HRs and RBIs and all are alot less then they are paying Wright. The pitching is there now and gets even better in the future, loose TC and bring in Backman to get this team playing the right way! Tired of the excuses.

It will get better, David. It will get better.

The Mets are 3rd in the league with getting runners into scoring position but are 24 in bringing them home so leave the pitching alone. Timely hitting is what they need and David is as little a contributor as the rest of the team

As much as it would be a disappointment, it is time for him to ask to get traded to a contender. It has been and will be the same old Mets year after year. At least they did not tease us until August.

That's what happens when you put on the mets kryptonite jersey. All powers are drained.

All this loosing  , is taking it's toll on him.  If this type of play continues the rest of the season , I would not be surprised to hear that he wants out.

Hate to say it but David needs to face the facts. He was lied to by Alderson and the Wilpons same as the fans have been lied to for years by this ownership.

David should ask for a trade before he ruins what's left of his career here with this poor excuse for management and ownership.

btw, just a guess, fans of every team in the NL east are probably saying, if only my team adds a bat or two or a pitcher....

Amazing how david wright doesn't say he's responsible for failing the mets too!

I want him a Met but it would not be right to wish him the opportunity at a real chance to get a ring!!

Better than what? Dave: you were duped, bro and took the $$$...there will NEVER be improvement to the point of contending...

This is true! I said it in another thread, the Mets would be in a much better position right now if only their offense would've been stronger. The pitching isn't to blame here. It's been great all around.

As a Yankees fan I feel bad for David Wright he deserves better he needs a real bat that can protect him in the lineup the Mets just don't have it

I read between the lines that the eval period of young players Wright mentions also means give Flores a chance to play regularly, Terry .... !!!

WHAT YOUNG PLAYERS IS HE TALKING ABOUT. Im sick of this guy. XC

With Wright getting back on track and Granderson functioning, I hope we  can hold it together until Lagares returns and d'Arnaud comes back ready to contribute. Counting Murph that would be five.

With them, plus Duda being OK, EY providing some spark when he does get on base, and the ss position at least over .200, I don't see why we can't compete, given our pitching.

When things get tough, you don't just quit, I admire David on his entire approach. Keep tuning out the outside world because if they aren't helping, supporting or doing anything to better the situation, they will always try to bring you down.

If we had signed Jose Abreu, Marlon Byrd, Nelson Cruz and Stephen Drew instead of Curtis Granderson and Chris Young we'd be in first place. Yes, we'd haves hD to spend more money (God forbid), but it would e been reasonable.

He did say "we all need to look at ourselves in the mirror.". He is part of that "we". He also said in that same interview that he has had many sleepless nights lately obsessing over his own performance. There was a quote in another article where he said he knows that if the team is going to win, he has to produce. He isn't making excuses or running from anything.

@C Nerrie Respected opinion but it won't work...we had these guys together for most of the season and they were still losing...too many if's for them to make some miraculous run all of a sudden. They are 2 proven and productive bats away from competing

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer  Good idea, now let's see Terry man up ...

How the heck did Tejada go from doghouse to the starter without Flores getting his legit shot I will never know ...

Cheryl Ann

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer He's got to be getting tired of Chris Young, right? When they moved Grandy up to lead off, CY was batting behind Wright in the clean-up spot. Good grief, do you think anyone was actually pitching to Wright? We saw yesterday that with CY hitting behind Grandy, Curtis was a walk machine. David wasn't taking the walks and instead desperately flailed at breaking stuff in the dirt on a wing and a prayer.  Must be aching for a short stop to replace Jose as well.  Seems odd that he'd be saying this a day after Collins said he didn't have time to develop Flores.  I still don't think Terry and the Captain are necessarily on good terms - at the very least, they don't seem to be reading from the same play book.

@wingo43  Personally, I think the right decision was to pass on Drew. I would have liked Abreu though.

Chris O'Neill

Enough with the Drew nonsense. He is not worth that money and barely better than what we have already. Please stop

@Steven Matregrano Duda is awful. The sooner the Mets understand this the better we will be.

C Nerrie

Sandybgone might be right,  buy I agree with Steve here.  I had composed the following before reading Steve's response.

"Earlier both Granderson and d'Arnaud were  providing nothing. Granderson is now contributing and there's reason to believe d'Arnaud will be better, maybe even good.

"I also feel that Duda is settling in and may be a decent ballplayer.

"Plus we may be benching CY, essentially being replaced by the useful EY + Abreu."
