Darryl Strawberry will be featured on HBO tonight

Darryl Strawberry will be profiled on HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel tonight at 10 pm ET.

The program travels to St. Louis and focuses on Strawberry’s life as an ordained minister and founder of a recovery center for substance-abuse users, during which he talks in details about losing his entire baseball earnings, his fight with cancer, jail time and drug addiction.

“The clothes are just hanging off of his body. He’s sitting in a chair and he’s like part of the fabric in the chair. He looks like the walking dead,” Darryl’s wife, Tracey, told HBO. “He told me not to get involved with him. ‘Girl, you have no idea what you’re getting yourself into,’ he said.”

Mrs. Strawberry moved Darryl from Florida to St. Louis, where she helped change his life.

Had Straw and Doc not become involved in drugs , they would have been in the HOF.

Have to agree with you. Rehabs are cash machines, and Darryl attaching his name to one probably adds some value. I'm glad Straw is alive and well, but it seems like he's turning his bad choices into a business.

@corcoran If he's helping people why do you care? I give him tremendous credit for turnng his life around.

@corcoran I'll always remember when he almost didn't show up at the '86 Mets 20th anniversary because of an appearance fee dispute.  That always turned me off.

@corcoran Self-promoter? Making money off his tales of woe? Sure, but when you look at the homeless, a chunk of them have problems with substance abuse.

If he can serve as an inspiration to them and others to get over it, then...really, it's all good.
