In his recent re-ranking of the Mets top 20 prospects, long-time minor league guru John Sickels says Blue Jays C Travis d’Arnaud will be the Mets top prospect, followed by Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard (who will also be acquired from the Jays).
Sickels ranks 21-year-old infielder Wilmer Flores at No. 4, followed by RHP Michael Fulmer, RHP Jeurys Familia, RHP Luis Mateo, OF Brandon Nimmo and SS Gavin Cecchini.
In regards to d’Arnaud, Sickels writes:
“He’s not perfect, but d’Arnaud is either the best catching prospect in baseball or the second-best behind Mike Zunino. Could use a bit more polish with his throwing and his plate discipline and immediate stardom is unlikely, but overall he’s the complete package. Don’t expect him to be Mike Piazza, but he should be a long-term solution.”
According to Sickels, Syndergaard is ahead of where Wheeler was at age 20, as he already has a strong sinking fastball, good changeup, solid command, good body, good makeup, and strong sabermetric profile.
