Daniel Murphy felt sluggish in first game back

Daniel Murphy returned Thursday after missing two games on paternity leave. He went 1-for-3 with a walk, but also committed two errors in the field.

“I was a little sluggish on defense,” Murphy said after the game Thursday. “It was frustrating.”

In response to radio hosts and some fans questioning the amount of time he spent away from the team to be with his wife and newborn son, Murphy said he was justified in using time given to him by the team and league.

Terry Collins told reporters Thursday that it’s not fair to criticize Murphy >> Read more at ESPNNew York PostDaily News and Newsday.

Murph kills other teams with his bat, the mets with his glove

Rooting for this team is awful.  For you guys that are much older than my 24-year old self, spare me the history lesson.  I realize some of you have been through worse.

But my God, it's not enough that this team starts 0-3 after years of dysfunction and losing.  Nah, let's just take low blows and start attacking dudes for wanting to hang around his newborn son.  And don't get me wrong - it's not like Francessa or Boomer make rooting for this team awful.  I expect that type of BS from gasbags like them.  They get paid to start fires.  The fact that FANS of this team are ignorant enough to buy into that BS is what ruins it.  You wanna bash Murphy for his performance or how he plays the game?  Take fire.  But realize that criticizing him for anything more than that is as pathetic as it gets.

Next year the mets will be known for the thing that killed the mets:  It will named; "The Baby Killer."

No answer. How come?

As anyone posting in this section has known, I've never been much of a fan of Murphy.  However, I think the criticism leveled against him this week is grossly unfair.  The man simply exercised his rights under the collective bargaining agreement.  It's not like he took time off during a pennant chase, this was the first week of the season.  If you're going to blame Murphy for the poor start of this season, don't blame him for wanting to be with his wife for three lousy days.  Blame him for being unprepared for the start of the season, blame him for being an inferior defender, but don't begrudge him for enjoying his first days as a father.

Lucas Duda should have scoped that ball. i bet if Ike Davis was playing 1B that play would have been made. it was not that bad of a throw it was right to Duda he just missed it. on the 2nd error come on that was a really tough play. Murphy had a speedster Denard Span running down the line so Murphy had to charge the ball and he got a bad hop.

His vagina was sore. Seriously what a woman Murphy was this week.

Well if we lose 100 games this year..at least we have a shot at the number one draft pick.

I honestly think these players don't respect Collins..time for a change.

My son was born via C-section.  It's a sometimes necessary, yet horrendous way to come into this world.  I had to leave the delivery room when the surgeon started up the saw.  Since Boomer and Carton went national, there's been an obvious effort to cater to the knuckle draggers who dominate the American sports scene.  What Boomer said, and how he said it was both callous and insensitive;  the way Murphy has dealt with every aspect of this has been classy and thoughtful.  Good on Murph for doing what he did for his wife and child.  He's gained a tremendous amount of respect in the minds of everyone who understands life's priorities.

Good for him for taking time off to be with his wife and newborn daughter! Life is short and time flies. If anything, I like Murphy more now.

The Mets have much bigger problems.

Someone in this organization has to take responsibility for this mess  whether it be Sandy ,Collins or the Wilpons ...when there are problems you address them its common sense and this team does not do this.

They need to let this go..Murph had a right to be with his family....But the Mets losing 3 in a row at home even without Murphy is an embarrassment...Hudgens should be fired now [Its his responsibility to make these hitters better] ...and its not happening...And the bullpen is also a nitemare..maybe Warthen should join him in the unemployment line?

Enough with this paternity story. Its only a story because it's New York. Sean Rodriguez, the 2B for the Rays (a much better team than the Mets), went on Paternity leave yesterday.  I'm pretty sure it didn't make national news.  Murphy missed on game to be with his wife and newborn baby.  Let it go. Lets talk about the real issue.  The fact that ownership and management could care less about putting a winning product on the field.

who cares he left and who cares he came back where are the Mets going anyway...move on ! a lot of time and effort wasted on a non issue.

Yup, like most new parents he's a little sleep-deprived. Welcome back Murph and congrats

What a cheap, cynical publicity ploy by the rightist WFAN/Fox Sports morons to denigrate Murphy, his marriage, his child, his values, and his well-earned membership in a Union that gives him rights.

I'm glad MSNBC did a pro-Murphy/anti-WFAN feature last night.

I am sure Boomer Esiason's kids will sleep better knowing how unimportant they are to their father.  Kudos to Murph for having his priorities in order.

@flmetsfan  Thank you one thousand times.  I couldn't have said it better myself.  I feel horrible for Murph and his wife that, what should have been a sentimental and ceremonious occasion, has turned into an asinine media circus.  SportsCenter is doing a centerpiece on "Paternity Leaves Across Professional Sports?"  Gimme a friggin break.

@jbutabi Do you have children? Murphy acted like a real man, being there for his wife and family when he was needed and wanted most. Any man who cannot understand this is not a real man. Yes, that means Boomer and Francesa and you. And I would be happy to say that to any of them, right to their face.
