Dale Thayer elects free agency

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Dale Thayer, who was removed from the 40-man roster last week, has elected to become a free agent.

Thayer, who will be 31 in December, went 0-3 with a 3.48 ERA in 11 appearances for the Mets this season. In 54 relief appearances for Triple-A Buffalo, Thayer went 4-3 with a 2.66 ERA, walking 15 batters and allowing 54 hits while striking out 66 in 71 innings.
