Daisuke Matsuzaka

Daisuke Matsuzaka is ready to throw 100 pitches Sunday

Daisuke Matsuzaka will make a spot start Sunday during the second game of the double-header against the D-Backs.

Pitching coach Dan Warthen said Friday that Matsuzaka will be capable of throwing 100 pitches on Sunday, despite moving to the bullpen at the start of the season.

“Throwing 100 pitches, it shouldn’t be a problem,” Matsuzaka agreed (ESPN, May 23). “It’s something I know how to do. I don’t really want to think too deeply into it. I just want to go into the game and do my role.”

Matsuzaka said he understands that Sunday is a one-time thing, and that he will return to pitching in relief Monday.

Arizona will reportedly promote a starting pitcher from the minor leagues.

So Dice should be good for 4 innings, is what you are saying.

I hope he goes out there and puts up zeros. I could see a few GMs with pitching problems come calling. Maybe Sandy can get something that leads to a bat. You know, one of a bunch of pieces that he later trades for an actual hitter. Hell, I'd even settle for someone capable of executing his horrible hitting approach. Seeing it succeed can't be as awful as watching it fail all the time.

Matsuzaka is a consummate professional and a huge plus on any team. I don't get the dislike for him from some people on this blog. I still remember when Matsuzaka was seen by the brain-dead as standing in the way of Mejia's progress, as if his professionalism was bad for the club.

YES, Another game to lose :{ I am so excited about 2014 and the 90 wins, what a joke.

Why is Montero starting and not deGrom? Did I miss something?

"Matsuzaka said he understands that Sunday is a one-time thing, and that he will return to pitching in relief Monday."

Why wouldn't he understand?  He doesn't speak English well, he's not stupid.

What a dumb thing to report.

Don't agree with this one. He's been in the bullpen all year so far. Why not just bring someone from the minors like Matz who is pitching pretty good for one start.

So he's only good for 4 innings then.

Given this team's current status, Dice K being on the roster at the expense of Mejia would have been an awful move. It would be "brain dead" to suggest otherwise.

Fortunately, both pitchers are now contributing. I don't think Dice K has gotten enough credit for how well he's pitched as a reliever this season. If you take out one bad performance against the Marlins, he's been virtually untouchable. It will be interesting to see hiw far he can go tomorrow as a starter.

@hankypanky. I agree, if I recall correctly dice k pitched very well towards the end of the season last year. The comments people make on here just make you wonder.

@kefhrny17 Montero's turn in the rotation is before deGrom's. Dice-K is a spot starter for the double header. I'm assuming deGrom will start Monday.

@Curtis Batdorf It's a well known fact that Dice-k doesn't understand English because he never

even tried to learn English for more than 7 years he lived in the US.  There is a good reason for his making 10 most despised player of the decade by Boston fans for his complaining & leaking the confidential conversation with his team to his Japanese friend journalist; his up and down

pitching drove the fans crazy.

@Frank Tangorra because if you bring up someone, he has to be placed on the 40 man roster and someone has to be dropped.  you don't do that for just one game.

Matz isn't out of Single A and you want him to face major league hitters?

Matz is I A ball.Saw him pitch. No way is he ready. They have guys in AAA to pitch. It is TC stupidity.

@nolrog Just posted the same exact thing above.  Should have scrolled down first.

@1harris1 I think a roster spot was pretty assured -- the concern was the starting job, which Meija in the long run might not have anyhow. Anyway, Dice-K has been impressive in the pen.

He said he didn't get the dislike displayed towards Dice-K. That's all. It's a valid point and a valid opinion. And people are posting their disdain now, not just months ago.

Let him post what he wants, as you are free to do. And perhaps you need to need your own advice about growing up.

Ok thanks, the rotation is still in flux in my mind...

@Brian McCarthy a spot start by a long guy is standard practice. It's either him or Torres. This is gratuitous TC bashing. They already called up two AAA guys to pitch -- Montero and DeGrom.

@1harris1 That's true though I thought at the time that they would either start him or bite the bullet and put him in the pen.  Black being wild only assured it.

Except remember that at the time, the front office was going to designate Mejia as either the 5th starter or start him at Triple A. Mejia had made it clear in the spring that he didn't want to be a reliever, and as such it didn't seem like management was willing to place him in the bullpen to start the season. Mejia had to beat out Dice K for the 5th starter spot coming out of soring training to make the team.

Seems like things have worked out nicely though for all parties concerned.
