D-Backs seeking young pitching for OF Jason Kubel

The D-Backs are seeking young pitching in exchange for OF Jason Kubel, tweets Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.

According to Heyman, the Orioles have expressed interest in acquiring Kubel, but they are “disinclined” to part with the necessary young pitching to get him.

As far as the Mets are concerned, Heyman says they have inquired about both Kubel and Justin Upton, but says the price is too high for Upton and the Mets don’t feel Kubel is a “perfect fit.”

I’ve been saying for weeks (and as recently as a few days ago) that the the D-Backs want pitching, and the caliber of those pitchers with will determine if they trade you Justin Upton or Kubel. I don’t think the Mets are comfortable with the price tag in either deal.

Kubel’s coming off a big year with Arizona after a disappointing 2011 season with the Twins. He saw a resurgence in power in 2012 and also notched 30 doubles, despite striking out only 150 times. He’s not a very good defender. Also, the Mets have said they’re looking for right-handed power this winter and Kubel hits left-handed. He’s under control for $15 million through 2014 (the D-Backs holds a $7.5 million option for him in 2014).
