In the wake of Cody Ross signing a three-year deal with the D-Backs, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney speculates that Arizona could soon trade Jason Kubel, while former GM Jim Bowden wonders if this finally means Justin Upton will get traded.
D-Backs GM Kevin Towers said he got tons of calls yesterday from teams interested in making a deal, though he’s under no pressure to make a move, according to MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert.
In addition to the Mets, the Yankees, Phillies, Braves, White Sox, Rangers, Red Sox, Orioles, Rays, Mariners have all been rumored to be looking for an outfielder at some point this winter.
Matthew Cerrone, MetsBlog.com:
There was talk during the Winter Meetings that Kubel could be moved soon, and likely for just pitching prospects, since the team getting him would likely pick up all of his $7 million salary. It seems that deal didn’t go through, or at least was held up. However, given the supply and demand, I bet Kubel’s price goes up a bit, especially since he’s such a good fit for the Phillies or Yankees. I never got the impression he was a top target of the Mets, but options are dwindling and this team’s big-league lineup is no better than it was last September…
Michael Bourn and Scott Hairston are still available on the open market; the A’s could still move Coco Crisp; and the Red Sox could still move Jacoby Ellsbury, though I think that’s less likely now that Ross is off the market.
