D-Backs being contacted about trading a SS

Multiple teams have called the D-Backs trying to trade for Triple-A SS Nick Ahmed (Rosenthal, June 12).

As of late May, the Mets were still focused on trading for a young shortstop under team control for many seasons, a person with knowledge of the team’s thinking told columnist Andy Martino (Daily News, May 21).

Ahmed, 24, is batting .304 with a .385 OBP, one HR and 26 RBI in 217 at bats with Arizona’s Triple-A affiliate.

MLB.com ranked him as Arizona’s No. 7 prospect entering this season, while praising his defense and plate discipline.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

The D-Backs and Mariners were often seen scouting Mets minor leaguers this past March. Insiders say the two sides had low-level talks before the start of the regular season, but the Mets were repeatedly asked to part with Noah Syndergaard, who they still have no interest in moving.

That said, I expect to hear lots of rumors this July connecting the Mets to Mariners shortstops Brad Miller and Nick Franklin, as well as Arizona shortstops Didi Gregorius and Chris Owings. And, I guess we now have to add Ahmed to the list, as well. He’s ready for the big leagues. He’s got a great glove. He’s an all-around better player than Wilmer Flores and, for a team lacking infield prospects, he’d be a nice get.

I still think some combination of Rafael Montero, Jacob deGrom, Kevin Plawecki and Jenrry Mejia will be Alderson’s best shot at trading for a young shortstop. I once heard the D-Backs were very interested in Travis d’Arnaud, but his slow start, injuries and concussion have probably decreased his value. I don’t believe Alderson will waste any of these bullets on Franklin, who may end up being only slightly better than Flores on the infield. Miller may be a different story, since he has a ton of potential, a big bat and a good eye, but decreasing value due to his recent struggles in the big leagues.

Matt told everyone that Jose Abreau was nothing more than a DH. He's lost all credibility as far as player evaluations go

Nick Ahmed, Nick Franklin, etc., would any of these guys make the Mets better? Stop pawning off triple-a players to us fans. Front office, manager all sucks. Wilpons-please sell the team.

A list of possible reasons why Flores isn't playing:

A) He is really an alien from Alpha Centauri that plans on subduing the human race to mine gold for the Annunaki

B) He knows the secret to Lamar's superpowers

C) He is a share holder of Qualcomm's biggest competitor

Syndergaard for Kris Bryant or Francisco Lindor?

A 24 year old SS playing in the Pacific Coast League with only 1 homer - PASS.

Terry will cry if another shortstop is obtained and Tejada can no longer start.

In order to get good players, you need to give up good players. People on here are greedy when it comes to trading prospects, the Blue Jays gave up a lot for R.A. Giving us Noah and Travis was already a lot plus Herrea, who is looking promising.

This is one reason why it's so frustrating to me that Wilmer Flores has been sitting on the bench. There might be no need to give up people like Montero, Plawecki, etc. for someone like Nick Ahmed. Ahmed has good, but hardly eye-popping, numbers for someone who is in Triple-A, and Flores might very well be better than him.

Or Flores might be lousy. Who knows? We're never going to find out if he's buried on the bench. Considering what (very) little we've seen so far, at a minimum he'll be no worse than Tejada, and he doesn't kill you defensively.

These shortstop options are crap, I'm sorry.  If the Mets are going to trade away their young players I'd rather have it be for an impact bat, not another pseudo-prospect.

it is what it is a minor lg. team in major lg. uniforms

A) Miller had an anomaly in the PCL.

B) Nick Franklin has been consistent through all levels

C) Flores should get a shot

D) Why give up a big prospect when we can get someone comparable for Bartolo Colon?

E) Let's just sign Asdrubal next year.

We do have a SS hitting .361 in AA ...23 yr old Matt Reynolds  but scouts say hes a utility player

So as of late May (2 weeks ago), the team was looking to trade for a young shortstop... translation: they are looking for a shortstop

SO WHY THE EFF HASN'T FLORES BEEN GIVEN A CHANCE TO SHOW WHAT HE CAN DO FOR OVER A WEEK???

This team will never improve until the ownership treats this as a major market team. Until then this is a losing proposition.

We can get anyone to manage and it will not matter. I look at the roster from 2010 and the one now and think that Terry Collins must be insane to want to manage this bunch.

My regret is I'd like to see Collins have a real team here and see how that works. He's won before but with talent. With the Mets he's had nothing to work with. But fans still blame him for a bad team.

Does anyone besides me remember when, oh, say last year that the Mets considered Flores to be a corner IF or 2B at best? And that a few years earlier had stopped playing him at SS? Now when the club fails to get a SS in the off season, the poor kid gets moved back there as has to make himself into a SS at the ML level.

All this nonsense about "controllable players" is code for "cheap."

Alderson has been forced to staff a bullpen "on-the-cheap" the last few off-seasons from the take the cheapest closer in Frankie Francisco in 2012 to the "sign the one's who'll  take a minor league deal" in Jose Valverda and Kyle Farnsworth. Now both of the later are gone having "bridged the gap" to younger arms.

Too bad Mets AA SS Matt Reynolds hasn't gotten a higher rating.. when he was drafted scouts said hes a future utility player. But he is hitting .361 in AA.

DseGrom is going to be a top of the rotation guy. Mejia looks to be a good closer and plawicki should be our catcher next year. I want Gregor is but I'm not giving up half our prospects for him. I'ad give Montero Flores and one of our younger high a guys. arizona now has foUr shortstops. I don't even need the litErely early give away the farm.

The time for action was during the offseason.... Too late in season to give up a bunch of prospects for less than a cant miss future star.  Mets have not done well evaluating future talent recently. We are too thin of talent to trade any one of any value... Notice know one is mentioning a straight up trade for either Flores /Tejada. At least as a temporary fix/hope a change of scenery would do better for both sides having a fresh start... This would only be a long shot fix for this year. Just hoping Mets spend to get one of the premier SS's supposedly available next offseason.. This year is almost done. Still hoping I am wrong. Note - For you all that beat up fellow Mets fans.. save the anger for the enemy (Wilpon ...ah..I meant the Yankees:) Come on Cecchini....

Gergorious is a very good defensive SS but id say the best hitting hed do is something like 260 with  6-7 homers maybe and 50 rbis.

I have no confidence in Alderson doing a smart trade with our young pitching. He will end up trading a future star for an unknown commodity that he thinks is "undervalued" and will end up not performing. Just to try and prove he's the smartest guy in the room.

This was just posted in Keith Law's chat today:

There's some chatter going around about D-Backs SS Nick Ahmed being a potential trade target. What do you make of him?

@kingman76 ... and his previous minor league seasons were below average.  why was this article even written?

@Rimo Chaloney I don't care who you get, they must get Tejada out of there or Terry will just keep playing Tejada

@mets2891 Don't you understand, THEY WILL NOT ADD PAYROLL. It has to be a prospect. They are DUMPING PAYOLL>

@Albert E Lewis I'll play any utility player at shortstop if he hits .360. Those are Ty Cobb numbers.

@theglider You can say that about any manager - even Joe Torre - give them a team stacked with talent and of course the team will win in spite of the manager.  This team has a lot of young players which he has repeatedly shown he cannot develop properly.  In that respect he is a failure.  He needs to go.

And what is it exactly with your man crush on Collins?  Are you too some type of middling, ineffective middle management type and you can relate to what he's going through.

D
D

@theglider please explain where Terry Collins has "won before but with talent"... and by Winning, I don't mean finishing a few games over .500.... I mean actually qualifying for a playoff berth....

His absolute best season as a manager was 85 wins, followed by 84 and 82...

@Bob Sikes Maybe Freddy and Jeffy don't want Sandy to aquire a SS...cause your right they did stop playing him there because they said he couldn't do it....Jeffy might be telling Sandy what he wants to do.

@Bob Sikes It says something when a team with literally no SS in their system moves one of the few SS OFF the position.

@eric88 @mets2891 Jeez how much lower are they going to drop their payroll - after Colon gets dumped it's under $70 million.

Actually his best season was in 1994 when the Astros went 66-49.

He had five second place finishes in his first five years. How many times have the Mets finished first or second in their 53 years?

Chris (Larchmont)

Conforto in Brooklyn to start a total waste of time? Saw you mentioned he could even start in AA.

Klaw (2:31 PM)

Yes, but 1) the Wilpons demand a winner in Brooklyn and 2) maybe he doesn't stay there more than a few weeks.

D
D

@theglider That 66-49 fits his M.O.... even some of Terry's Mets teams were competitve until the all-star break before collapsing... he still had 47 games to go in 1994- roughly 30% of a season remaining.

Five Second Place Finishes, wow that is impressive.... again, his best seasons were:

85 wins

84 wins

82 wins

Mediocrity Defined, and does not qualify as "winning" in my book

@BringBackDaveTelghe It's always about putting people in the seats in Brooklyn (money) with the Wilpons.  Too bad they don't feel the same way about putting fannies in the seats in Queens - oh wait I forgot you can bring your kid to the ballpark for face painting and running around the bases with Mr. Met.
