Curtis Granderson stands by his comments about Mets fans

Mets OF Curtis Granderson said he does not regret saying, “true New Yorkers are Mets fans,” noting he meant no harm to the Yankees with his remarks.

“My comment wasn’t a dig at anybody, it was just some things that people said to me on a consistent basis,’’ Granderson said, according to Kevin Kernan of the New York Post. “I’m excited to see the New York sports fans that are Mets fans come out in droves. I’ve heard great things about the past, and now to get a chance to be a part of it in the present and the future, I’m very optimistic about it.”

Sandy Alderson liked what Granderson had to say about Mets fans as well.

“I was pleased,” Alderson told the New York Post. “I like somebody with a little edge.”

Mets COO Jeff Wilpon agreed, and said he’s excited for what Granderson brings to the Mets.

“I thought it was a great comment,” Wilpon said. “I knew it was going to be controversial, but he’s speaking from the heart, and if that’s what he feels, guess what, he’s the type of guy who can back it up. He’s a Met now. He’s turned the page. Curtis brings an outside view to the organization, and that’s a good thing. I’m very happy to get to know him.’’

Granderson recognizes the need to back up those comments on the field, and he is excited to be in a leadership role with the Mets.

“I will help build team bonding and communication. I’m in a different position now in my career. It’s exciting to be a veteran,” Granderson said.

So I guess he feels like his fans that were there when he won the world series with the Yankees in '09 weren't true New York fans

Yankees buy their team, they refused to pay their all star  second basemen who has won multiple gold gloves and silver sluggers and yet they sign this "Baseball God" from japan and now that they signed him they are  apparently "world series favorites". I hate when all of my friends and family who are yankee fans say "27 rings" nothing pisses me off more then that. i honestly hope that the Yankees struggle and run out of money because they have no farm system and they will feel what the Mets have endured for  years

The Mets are for New Yorkers, the Yankees are for tourists and thugs. Everybody knows that. If you ARE a New Yorker and not a thug, the only way you're a Yankee fan is if you're a loser with no self-esteem, and need to attach yourself to the more successful team in order to somehow magically elevate yourself. If this is the case, STAY with the Yankees...you don't have the nuts or the brains to be a Met fan.

Just look at the season attendance and u will see who truly draws more!

Every time I've been to Citifield, it's been packed! And when was the last time we booed our own players? Yankees fans seem to do that a lot.

Johnny Pnumunee, please learn how to type. You make yourself look really dumb when you cant. I've been a Mets fan since I was born in 1988, and I can truly say that if you only like a team because they have a lot of championships in the past, then you are a bad fan.

Boy the Yankees spend 500 million dollars on new players and their fans are bitch'n about Granderson. If the Mets spent that much money in a single off season I wouldn't give a crap about an ex player flapping his gums. And as a Met fan I hope Granderson works out. I like his attitude and hope he will help Wright with the leadership role.

My god people it's called drumming up interest.  If this comment makes you all nutty in the preseason...from a Met player.   Then Yankee fans are really easy to goad.  You got enough problems with your own team.

Where did all the "Yankee Class" go?

I'm a Mets fan and while I appreciate Granderson's excitement about joining his team, I don't like his comments. So, those who are Yankee fans aren't true New Yorkers? I'm not a Yankee troll, but I'm sure there are lots of heroes (police officers, firefighters, soldiers, teachers, etc. etc.) who are Yankee fans as well....so I guess they are not real New Yorkers?? Such a stupid comment to make!!!

I'm sure if he is signed by the Yankees after his contract ends with the Mets, he will say real New Yorkers are Yankees fans! Money talks!!

Wow.  Look at all the butt hurt Yankee fans posting on this thread.  :P

I guess that in order to be a "true" fan you have to support a losing team, adopt the motto "Next Year will be our year", incorporate the "other" team in NY in every conversation you have about your franchise, pick players of the scrap heap that winning franchises wouldn't even look at. Oh and let's not forget the tribute to the Dodgers that has fixated this entire team and fan base.

Interesting to read the comments about the fans flying up to NY to see the mets. I'm assuming that all 8 of them got a group discount.

I would say die hards, because the Met never help themselves.

Okay but the Yankees are not paying him anymore so yes true New Yorkers are Mets fans. and if the Yankees were still paying him true New Yorkers would be Yankees fan. I'm a cynic I see everything in dollars and cents.

This team will lose a lot of 2-1 games, again. 75 wins this year, if they get some breaks.

Loyalty? I watched them win 40 games in 1962 and kept coming back. Nothing beats the loyalty of a true Mets fan.

It's simple. For years and years the lowly Met outdrew the Yankees. Once the Mets become a winning team again in 2014 and a championship team in 2015, they once again will become the toughest ticket in town and the true feelings of New Yorkers will be quite evident.

@manu george I agree with you. But Granderson misspoke I think. People tell him about the die hard, adversity dealing Mets fans and they equate that with New Yorkers.  Of course Yankee fans are real New Yorkers...the comment is just so silly. But I must tell you, when most Yankee fans I meet find out I'm a Mets fan they ask me "why"? When I explain growing up at Shea with my awesome grandfather who was a NY Giants fan (NL baseball fan) they look at me like it is impossible for any Mets fan to have had a bonding experience with the Mets. They also can't seem to understand just how much I hate the DH and how unwatchable AL baseball is for me because of it. It's insulting to me and my family. Not the disliking the Mets...I get that. It's the inability to understand the relationship between the Mets and their fans that annoys me.

@manu george To be fair, we don't really know the type of fan Granderson had to deal with on a daily basis.  He may have some experiences where that comment came from.

@Adam Mumford I haven't read one post from a Yankee fan here that hurt my butt in any way. In fact, I find the arrogance and lack of imagination on the part of Yankee fans quite amusing. uhhhh..Mets means My Entire Team Stinks....duh... The Muts.... duh   27 rings, 27 rings....uhhh Jeter, we have Jeter...uhhhh have fun with all those strikeouts. Please, it's hurt my butt so much you gotta stop. LMAO!

The only time I even think about the Yankees is when someone like you mentions them to me. Then I fall into a deep trance thinking...Lets Go Mets! over and over again until you go away.

baseballnblues

Lets Go Mets! C'mon...you know you're just dying to say it. Lets Go Mets...Lets Go Mets....Lets Go Mets!!! Yes!! I heard ya, I know I did. LMAO! Yankee fans are so funny.

But true Mets go to the Yankees...often. You have one now.

baseballnblues

Yes...that was what people were saying to him. Granderson just blurted it out wrong and now he has to stick with it. It's easy to be a Yankee fan...the Mets, not so much.

baseballnblues
baseballnblues

Unfortunately, that is really not true in any way. Yankee fans are the biggest bandwagon whiners in baseball.

baseballnblues
baseballnblues

The problem is that most Yankee fans only know the Yankees. How many of them can even name another lineup? Very few that I have met in my 40+ years.

baseballnblues
baseballnblues

You mean the Yankees and Yankee fans in general? Oh yeah, they are pretty funny to most Mets fans.

manu george
manu george

@baseballnblues @manu george I agree. I think some Yankee fans can be annoying. But this is such an insensitive comment to make. Being a New Yorker has nothing to do with baseball. At the end of the day, baseball is just a game and there's much more to life or being a New Yorker than baseball or the Mets. There are so many heroes who laid their lives for New York on 9/11 who might've just happened to be Yankees fans...are they not real New Yorkers? Definitely not a wise comment to make from a veteran player!!
