Contract details for Dice-K, Farnsworth and Valverde

The Mets recently inked Daisuke Matsuzaka, Kyle Farnsworth and Jose Valverde to minor-league deals with invited to major league camp.

For Matsuzaka, who can earn $1.5 million on the MLB roster, he can opt out of his contract with the Mets if he is not on the big league team by May 30 (Sherman).

Farnsworth can also earn a base salary of $1.5 million, with $75,000 bonuses for 40, 45, 50 and 55 appearances. That will be bumped to $100,000 for 60 and 65 appearances, respectively. He can also earn $100,000 for 30 and 35 games finished, $250,000 for 40 and 45 games finished and $300,000 for 50 games finished (Sherman). Valverde has a base salary of $1 million, and all the bonuses Farnsworth has in his contract.

Farnsworth has an out in his contract for March 23 (Sherman), while Valverde can become a free agent if he’s not on the MLB roster by March 26 (Sherman).

“New York is awesome. I can go shopping every morning,” Valverde said. He also mentioned that he almost signed with the Mets before the 2013 season, but was advised to stay in Detroit (DiComo).

“I’ve always wanted to play here,” he said (Puma).

Don't forget the year's supply of ramen noodles to survive on such minimal salary. :)

Wilpon "its 2014 and the Mets are open for business". The payroll last year- 87,877,33. million. This year per Sandy 85 to 87 million. NOW WAIT, the Mets said over the last' 3 years, 14 will be our year to spend. The Mets like all  MLB teams now receive an additional 26.5 million per the new Nat'l TV deal! Now wait, THE PAYROLL IS NOT GOING UP A DIME.  Now Sandy is saying, if we by more tickets the Mets can spend more on payroll.

How insulting, do they think we believe that. Do they truly believe we are stupid. The gaul, they continue their deceit. Sandy stinks as a GM. You are RICH with pitching thru out the system, and you make no trades! Are you really going to start the season with mostly the same darn holes at SS and 1B. You know you WON'T spend so trade for prospects from other teams to fill the hole and start to build. No, you sit on your hands again. You are going to have another lousy season after 4 years on the job!! You need to resign. You are judged on results and you have failed.

I don't know if you guys saw this on MLBTradeRumors today, but Red Sox P Ryan Dempster went on the restricted list, freeing up $13.25 million for the Sox. The site suggested Boston could use that space under the threshold to re-sign Drew. Get ready to be Bourn'ed again!

low risk, decent reward. there's no such thing as a sure thing in the bullpen unless you were mariano rivera.

Dice K can pitch - Mets could get lucky with him. The other two ... Hmmm ... Would be happy if one panned out considering Mets record with bringing on vet RPs in last few years

The thing about Valverde is that throughout his career, his success really only came as a closer. His runs as set up man were mixed at best. Although I am rooting for him, because I think  he would bring a swagger of sorts and personality to our bullpen, I think he is  a true longshot because Parnell will be the closer. I think Farnsworth is much more likely, maybe not as big an upside as Valverde but still could be a decent payoff.

@Jimmy  The Mets were never in on Drew, that was done to keep fans interested during ticket buying season.

@Macacawitz Exactly, way to keep your eye on the prize, Valverde.  Just release him now.

@amazagain I'd say their track record is as good as every other team.

Misses on Francisco, Lyon, Feliciano, Ramires, Acosta.. Was pretty good with Hawkins, Rice, Atchison, Rauch, Byrdak..

This is the way it goes. YOu need to get a few guy cheaply like they are doing.

@matt520 Dice K actually pitched well in September. But both Valverde and Farnsworth are 2 stiffs that are finished that no other team would take. I'd rather go with and develop the kids than to see these 2 stiffs pour gasoline on the fire game after game. Typical Met's dumpster diving at it's best!
