Bartolo Colon’s mother died of breast cancer Monday, hours after he was scratched from his scheduled start against the Cubs so he could fly home to see her. The Mets will place Colon on the bereavement list Tuesday.
Colon flew to the Dominican Republic to be with Adriana Morales, 63, who entered the hospital during the weekend. Her death was announced by the Cibao Eagles, a Dominican winter league team.
The Mets will call up Gonzalez Germen from Triple-A Las Vegas to replace Colon.
In 21 games earlier this year, Germen had a 4.78 ERA over 26 1/3 innings, striking out 26 and walking 11. In 14 games with Las Vegas, Germen has a 0.52 ERA over 17 1/3 innings. He’s struck out 17 and walked six.
