Ike Davis and Lucas Duda

Lucas Duda wins first job, Ike Davis could still be traded

4:45 p.m.: Terry Collins chose to go with Lucas Duda, because if he fails Duda can play other positions, whereas Ike Davis is only a first baseman, the manager told reporters before Friday’s game.

“We need to find out what Lucas can do first,” Collins explained. “I want to see if he can handle it.”

According to Collins, at least for the next week or so, Duda is likely to get three out of four starts against right-handed starting pitchers, while Davis may start once.

3:52 p.m.: The Mets still think it’s possible they trade Davis, according to sources (Martino, Apr. 4).

3:30 p.m.: Duda will bat fifth and start at first base for the Mets on Friday.

Davis said before Friday’s game that he had a fair chance to win the job (Ehalt, Apr. 4).

April 3: Duda will be named the Mets starting first baseman (Martino, April 3).

April 3: Terry Collins will pick a starting first baseman on Friday and stick with him for a while, he said after Thursday’s game.

Davis is the only first baseman to have a hit this season, singling in a pinch hitting opportunity on Thursday. Davis, Duda and Josh Satin each had one start over the first three games.

Why don't the Mets move David Wright to first and give Wilmer Flores a chance to show what he can do at third...

It's time for an organizational overhaul. How long is Bud going to let the Mets be the laughing stock of the leauge in the biggest market in baseball? Take your lips off of the wilpons butt and make them sell the team! They are ruining this organization!

Dear Starting pitchers,

We know you're concerned about having the bullpen blow your lead. We know you might be concerned and your concern might effect your performance. But lest you worry, we've also benched a superior defender. Now you won't need to be concerned about the bullpen collapsing, because the first baseman's glove is all heel.

You're welcome.

I've stopped trying to make sense of it. There is none. Ike is a great defensive player and has hit for power, while Duda is a big stiff who gets his pitch right where he wants it once a week, and isn't even in the conversation d-wise with Ike.

Easier to just understand the Mets don't like Ike and are set on moving him. That's it. Don't try to understand the logic. It's simply flawed.

Makes no sense.    The thought process is dumb.  If duda cannot play 1B he isnt playing the outfield.  I guess Ike stole Collins wallet or Collins is trying to light a fire under Ike.  Ike is 1-3 with a BB and no Ks this season with better defense and Duda is 0-6 3 Ks and a BB.  Sounds like Duda "Won" the job.

LOL

So Duda is the starting first basemen as long as Ike isn't playing? I think that's what Terry said anyway

Ike will be starting by May 1st after Duda fails miserably...I've never seen a worst collection of 1B

Damn, I thought Davis had up edge to start. I still have faith he will pull for the position.

I would release 'em both (Ike & Duda) and get a real 1B, but that is me.

He "won" the first base job?  Is going to hitless to open the season how you win a job on this team?

This has become so discouraging and outright embarrassing.  This team is an absolute joke.  The only approach they should be taking at this point is play out the games, see who in the rotation has any value, and trade them for prospects.  There is nothing at this point interesting or encouraging about this team.  They are horrible to watch and the front office doesn't have a clue how to make things better.

if they are trying to trade ike shouldnt he be in triple a starting or starting for the mets? maybe build some trade value.....

I know there is alot or hate and disappointment going around; but Duda can be a 20/80 guy if you give him 500+ at bats.

Collins is a joke.

dumb question but Lucas has been here as long as Ike why doesn't Collins know what he can do or Ike do at this time?

What position is it that Collins thinks Duda can play besides 1B?

Ok so the guy who can hit 30hr is not playing first base every day?? And you wonder why the mets are 0-3.

If duda fails, he should not be allowed to be in the outfield

Did they line the potential 1B up by weight and that's how he got to go first?  Or was it just names in a hat?  He certainly didn't earn anything with anything he's ever done on the field.  I could have lived with giving Davis another shot because he at least knows how to field and has shown the ability to hit in the past.  Either way if neither of them do anything in the next month they both need to be in AAA or released.

This situation was handled in the most haphazard way  possible. You don't pick a winner, the stat's do. Its based on performance. You don't all of a sudden wake up one day and randomly pick one of the guys, and certainly not after THREE freaking games!

There's absolutely NO WAY Duda WON this job! Both him and Ike played only 1 game at first, Duda didn't get a hit (Ike did), Ike had a better (very short) spring and Duda looked like crap playing defense on Wednesday... And Duda has NO TRACK RECORD of hitting for a decent average

CLUELESS SANDY should be fired

Incompetence is no longer tolerated

Duda can play other positions, has Colins been watching duda with the opportunities he's had in the outfield (if there is another position Duda can play it would be DH).

He won nothing, he gets a week at first, where he will fail at hitting and fielding before he is DFA'd and we can all mock SA n TC for their stupidity.

@cbsrustyshack @SNYtv Obviously that's baseball man the GM tells the manager who to play, where, in what spot. Glad we have a competent man in TC who knows how to say OK

@Bryan McEntee The Pros to THE DUDE are plentiful. WALKING MACHINE, hits bombs, takes pitches, and a plus plus defender at first base. If given the chance he will MASH. THE DUDE has a real killer instinct in him and hes ready to go and grab this job by the horns! 3-5 w/ 2 BOMBS tonight.

bitencurl

@mike23 Well its 2014. Baseballs different, defense doesn't matter. Simple as that. THE DUDE is a walking machine. Wearing down the opponent pitcher every AB. Even when he Ks looking it can be a positive. WE will be hearing MVP chants in August.

@tullydew Agree 100%. Sandy has done what was needed as Cerrone stated earlier. GET RID OF Reyes, and some bad contracts, evaluate our within talent for 3 years and see where we are at once year 4 starts. Im pumped THE DUDE won the job, and Im pumped to see more of EY in the outfield. I'm gonna run down a response to your post

@bitencurl @mike23  Bitencurl, you are so right. With the way the game is changing, I'd actually be surprised if this year's MVP isn't the guy who leads the league in striking out looking...although, to be honest with you, that's a crude metric. The real important number is SOL+: the formula is (Swings and Misses divided by Pitches Taken For Strikes times Number of People On Base When You Whiff minus Pitches Taken for Balls) divided by How Tired The Pitcher Looks Afterward.   Duda's SOL+ over his career is a gaudy 371. You've got to take a sabermetric perspective, and if the public catches on, the guy  projects to be a perennial All-Star.

@bitencurl Sarcasm? Or mentally slow?

@bitencurl @tullydew  I agree with everything except for catcher. I am not going to give up on a rookie catcher with 100 at bats. I am willing to give him the entire season to see if he comes around.

I fault the management and ownership for not putting enough talent on this team to allow your young catcher to develop. Catcher is probably the hardest position to break in at the major league level. You have to manage a pitching staff and figure out your offense too. He doesnt need the extra stress of having to be under the microscope for every at bat.

bitencurl
bitencurl

@4EverMets @bitencurl The next time citi field is packed and loud for a game will be the first time! But that's all part of the plan, we had no choice guys we simply HAD to construct the roster in this exact way. Tough pill to swallow but Sandy really cares about the mets and knows what he is doing here.
