Terry Collins 2 (Baron)

Collins needed to calm a tense clubhouse on Monday

Mets manager Terry Collins met with individual players and coaches Tuesday, in the wake of Sandy Alderson firing hitting coach Dave Hudgens and releasing Jose Valverde.

“I talked to a number of guys today, a number of pitchers,” Collins said (Daily News, May 28). “I’ve talked to all the coaches. I had some of the core guys in and had a conversation. I reassured them, things happen in our game. Sometimes there’s no explanation. But you’ve got to go play. Ultimately this is their game. … Those are the guys people come to see play. We’ve got to let them continue to move forward, move ahead and we’re still there to support them.”

They should be tense and upset about their woeful offensive output as a team.  If it takes firing a hitting coach and releasing a scrub reliever to cause tension, these guys have their priorities backwards.

The fact that the clubhouse was tense and TC had to go in and have a conversation with them about it tells me this team has been coddled and babied for too long.

"Tense clubhouse?"  They fire Hudgens, release Valverde, and people in the clubhouse are "tense"?

If they feel that would make them tense, perhaps a few people in that clubhouse are feeling a little guilty about not getting their respective jobs done.  This is the Major Leagues, nobody is guaranteed a spot on a roster, and if you can't get your job done, you should be gone.

"Tense clubhouse"?  What's wrong did we hurt someone's bridge game because their partner was shown the door?

Sometimes it looks like they play like they're trying to get away with losing as much as possible, so if firing someone lets them know theyve been greedy, than that'd make sense.

I love it! The person who should be fired telling everyone not to worry. A very large broom is needed for the coaches, players, manager, gm, and owners. I'm getting tired of watching minor league players pose as major leaguers and a manager who can't manage his way out of a paper bag.

They act as if the clubhouse hamster died. You have to be kidding me?!?

'Sometimes there’s no explanation' wait what? Has he even been watching this team play?

This is exactly what was needed, stir the pot. Boo who the coaches and players were tense. Oh so they can't hide behind the "wait for our prospects" BS anymore... Too bad.

Yes the Mets look like a circus and it seems like free agents may not want to come here. But look at the circus the Yankees were in the late 70's. Just start winning and the rest will take care of it self. But I'm starting to feel it's just a pipe dream.

The interesting point was that TC said he talked to PITCHERS - not players.  I wonder if the guys in the pen viewed this as "Valverde got hit badly and they cut him"...rather than "Valverde has never shown he could get it done, and this was a convenient excuse to cut him."?

I agree that the timing makes it smell like an OWNER move, not a GM move...it all feels very Steinbrenner-esque...vintage 1980s/early 1990s.

Feels like the Sandy/Terry regime is living on borrowed time.  Is Jeff looking at the D-Backs move to hire LaRussa in May to clean house and looking to emulate?  How about Jim Leyland?

Why would these meetings need to take place if they're all supposedly professionals? They don't know this is part of the game? Shouldn't the captain and team veterans have this covered? Odd that Terry felt compelled to report this at all. This is an in house matter that doesn't need to get publicity though the media IMO

For Terry to say the firing was because things happen shows a lack of understanding it happened because Hudgens was terrible. Hudgens was here as a favor to Sandy and not based on his success or work ethic. Sandy likes him. The same reason Terry and Bob Geren are here. They are very bad at what they are being paid to do.

The players were upset because they know that firing Hudgens was a Jeff Wilpon move.

Let's get the facts straight;

It was Jeff Wilpon that fired Hudgens. Sandy wanted to keep him and was overruled.

@cmetsfanNo, it's more like this is a game where you get paid a lot of money for merely showing up for work, traveling around the country, staying in five star hotels, and being treated like royalty.

As Crash Davis once said, "...you get to hit white balls in batting practice..."

@fatherflot Leyland is the reason we have Terry. Leyland is a choker who quit on the Rockies he won with the Marlins on a super stacked team. Terry was his coach they were buddies and Owners think that everyone on Leyland staffs are  good. The opposite is true. Altogether Joe Madden has a Leyland connection and he is ok.
