Ike Davis 17 (Baron)

Ike Davis could get 80 – 100 ABs in Spring Training

Last week, Terry Collins said he planned to give 1B Ike Davis 80 – 100 at-bats during Spring Training (Rieber, Feb. 8).

“I think it’s very, very important to try to get him in midseason form when the season starts,” Collins explained. “A lot of guys leave spring training and have 50, 60 at-bats. I might get him 80 to 100 this spring just to make sure he’s ready to go when we start.”

Last spring, Davis got 55 at bats and hit .327 with an .885 OPS. He went on to hit .205 with a .661 OPS, 9 HR and 33 RBI during the regular season.

Ike’s either going to find himself or he won’t at this point, so I’m not sure overextending him in Grapefruit League games will net the results Terry is looking for. In addition, spring at-bats don’t mean much, and too much work too early often results in an injury, something the Mets just don’t need. Besides, if Ike is going to get 80-100 at bats, they won’t be able to get an adequate look at Lucas Duda or get Josh Satin the necessary work he needs to prepare for the season.

Maybe Ike and duda can hold hands at first - yeah I'm kidding

Ike will get two singles in the first meaningless spring training game and there will be 20 posters on this site drooling about what a monster season he is sitting on. And they will be wrong. Put that in Da Book

enough is enough get rid of Davis already if they gotta keep speculating he's gonna get dealt, tired of hearing about him potentially getting traded!!!!  smh move on to something new already!!!!!

As if we need an "extended look" at Duda- jeez... Let's deal him for a mid level prospect and show Ike we believe in him. Lucas is never gonna be the answer as a full time player and I'd much rather let Flores play if Ike falters anyway

Get him in midseason, .195 BA .290 OBP form? The phrase "midseason form" means nothing for someone who is absolutely trash in the middle of the season.

If there's really a valley fever aspect to this, the fatigue should probably really kick in the first week of playing in cold air.

It's only about the money. The idea that Duda and Ike will each have the same opportunity to 'win' the starting job is a fallacy. There is no way the Mets are paying Ike $3.5M to play for Wally in Vegas. Duda will have to convincingly outplay Ike in ST to get the job. It's Ike's to lose because of the money. Loading up on his AB's in ST is a CYA exercise to justify his release if he tanks. No one is trading for Ike at this point, so in what is consistent with the team, we're in a bad situation.

Duda, who I have little regard for as a player, is also in a bad situation. Even if he outplays Ike to some degree, he could still end up in Vegas. There is no way he should stay on the ML roster if the idea is that he is third on the 1B depth chart and is also the fifth outfielder. This is a major off-season fail.

Yes, because mid-season form for Ike Davis has been so consistently impressive.  Terry is certainly in mid season form.

is this the 40th time this has been posted? what fan, scout anybody is going to count Ike's AB's?

hey it's nearly 2pm, isn't it time for a some speculation on Drew and then another piece tomorrow on Ike still may be traded some day?

Between Split Squad and B games + playing other positions Duda and Satin will get enough work

@ron flanagan-lucas can florish as a 30 plus home run hitter, just play him at first base dude, stop the name calling,

Even if he hits .500 in ST, it'll be against minor leaguers and "also-rans".

When the regular season comes around he'll hit .210 with a ton of strikeouts. Dump him, and play Duda. At least Duda gets on base

Spring Training will not justify selecting or not selecting a first baseman. Ike hit .327 in 2013's Spring Training...look how that panned out in April. We really won't know what we have unfortunately until we hit May....with either Ike or Duda.

give lucas another chance as well

DH him as much as possible. I don't see where that is an issue.

Also, there is no reason Duda and Satin can't play outfield in some of the spring games and finding 50+ bats for each shouldn't be an issue.

Plan B is to get all of Ike Davis' bad at bats out of the way in spring training???

So he will have nothing but good at bats for the entire 2014?

"Ike’s either going to find himself or he won’t at this point."  I am dumber for having read this sentence.

The next Met first baseman is Dom Smith.  Davis and Duda are being used as bad place holders.  I would rather Duda on the bench, Davis Gone, Murphy at First (for now), EY at second and Drew at SS.

At least you would make a pitcher work.  At this point i will take Murph's 280 at 1st with 12 HR and just be happy to know i got rid of an automatic out.

My money's on "won't"

The Mets should have signed Corey Hart to play first and should have laid off Chris Young.

im down with this, Ike has the biggest upside of the bunch, I wanna give him as much work as possible in spring training and get this guy going somehow.  This is absolute last shot with this franchise so if your gunna have him on this roster give him all he can handle in spring training and in the first month of the season. He stinks then you have to get rid of him.  I don't wanna see this guy batting 200 in june.

Maybe "obviously" wasn't the right word, but I think keeping Ike busy at the plate in ST is not an unreasonable idea.  TC is certainly aware that Duda needs at-bats, which may have been the genesis of the scary talk of Duda in left field.

It's hard to fault someone for fishing around trying to figure out what to do with the Ike situation.

BringBackDaveTelghe

Spring training stats mean ABSOLUTELY nothing.  It's great for a player's psyche but that's about it.

There's a very good chance that Ike is nothing more then a AAAA player, which is the level of talent he's going to see in the Spring.  I'm sure we'll get all sorts of meaningless Spring numbers jammed down our throats but hopefully no one gets distracted with that.

collins wants ike in midseason form by the end of spring training.  so we should expect .189 avg with a .250 OBP?  nice.

Terry said it.  So I fully expect Ike to get 25 ABs this spring.

@hillsideav unless one is traded or released, they will both be on the 25 man roster...they will not pay minor league players major league salaries

helloboy
helloboy

@BringBackDaveTelghe  Exactly.  Pitchers generally do not game plan in pre-season so the batter does not get the normal sequence he sees.  In Davis' case, this means he will not see the gluton of breaking pitches in the spring.  His swing is like swiss cheese and he will always be out in front.  Davis is the type that needs to sit breaking ball on all pitches and adjust if he gets a fastball.

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

@slainte2 If any team would buy into his ST performance, Sandy will have to try very hard to not yell SUCKER into the phone.

hillsideav
hillsideav

@mets2014 @hillsideav I can't see how that can work if Satin is a given. Who are our 5 bench players?

I have: Satin, either Lagares or EYJ, some catcher, Quintanilla, and a real 5th outfielder. Duda in the outfield? Yikes. So the point I'm making is that you're right, they won't pay minor leaguers major league money, and Davis is untradeable. I don't' buy into this fake competition scenario. Duda should be cut loose for a bag of balls unless his fat camp has turned him into some other hitter.

mingo
mingo

@Ryan Flanagan @Rod Fuller Why is that dumb?

Why is saying that is not normal odds out of line?

There are only 11 current major leaguers out of more than 900 players who are Jewish according to

http://www.jewishbaseballnews.com/players/

So how is this ignorant or dumb?

No place is it putting down Jews in any way. It is merely a statement of fact. It isn't wrong, so it can't be dumb. Its borne out in the stats so it isn't ignorant either.
