Shaun Marcum out for the season; Mets activate Gonzalez Germen

Shaun Marcum 1 polaroidShaun Marcum will not pitch again this season, according to multiple reports.

The Mets have recalled RHP Gonzalez Germen from Triple-A Las Vegas.

7:05 pm: Marcum has been diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome and will have surgery on Monday (Carig, Newsday).

Marcum’s issue involves a blocked artery, but he should be able to begin throwing again in two months (Rubin, ESPN New York).

5:50 pm: “That hasn’t been announced here today, but it’s coming shortly,” WFAN’s Ed Coleman said on air earlier, regarding Marcum maybe not pitching again this year. Coleman noted that he heard the Mets are working with Marcum’s agent on contract details.

Marcum can earn up to an additional $4 million in bonuses based on innings pitched and time on the roster, according to ESPN New York.

This will be very disappointing for Marcum. For the Mets, though, it sort of solves two issues, 1) It opens up Jon Niese’s spot in the rotation when he’s ready, which was technically taken by Zack Wheeler, and 2) it saves the team money, since Marcum has some pretty serious incentives for games played.
