Chris Young has no excuse for dropping pop up

Chris Young said he has no excuse for dropping a routine fly ball in right field to start the 14th inning on Friday night.

Marlon Byrd, who was safe because of the dropped pop up, eventually scored the game-winning run.

“It was just a flub up,’” Young said. “It was like I’m looking dead at it, the ball’s coming down, and I just completely lost it. I got a little blurry. It’s like I didn’t even see it. I don’t know why it happened, but there’s no excuse. Big mistake. The game, where if you play that long, you want to be able to win. For me not to come up with that play, it sucks.”

Young started the game on the bench, then went hitless with a walk in three plate appearances. He’s hitting .202 this season.

Oh yeah, chris young is a bum.

I think abreu should be the everyday left fielder. We need a first baseman, a left fielder, & a catcher that can hit. Will never make it into the playoffs with out 3 more players that can hit well.you could throw a new shortstop as well.

Cruz wanted $15M a year when Mets signed Young. I believe Mets made Cruz an offer as was stated he wanted more years than Alderson was willing to give just like everyone else. Baltimore lucked out when he lowered his price. Mets did nothing wrong there. He is definitely not worth $60M, but then neither is Granderson. Alderson made out om Byrd in 2013 it cost Mets $500K and he got Black and Herrera in return.

CY looked like he was tired last night when the ball was hit to them.  He needs to take 5 hour energy or something because the man is lifeless.  Blame Sandy for paying all that money to that loser.  Sandy is not a good G.M. cause he could of gave that money to someone more productive than this loser.  We root for an aggravating team.

Terry will not let Sandy be proven wrong, The Wilcons will fire both of them!

Yes and Sandy said they signed CY over Cruz because he is a better defender. Well if you are going to be dropping easy fly balls like that than you need to be hitting 19 home runs like Cruz. The Mets have a chance to steal this division and they just keep giving games away because of the GM and Manager.

You have to wonder if that was subconsciously a DESPERATE attempt by CY to self sabotage. I mean, WE all could have caught that. That literally was the game. I felt bad for Mejia. To start that inning with one quickly away as opposed to soul crushing error and a man on second is all the difference in the world! Why does stuff like that happen to the Mets? I can't recall us getting a MAJOR break like that like FOREVER! Can you imagine a team we're playing against just dropping a fly ball in a 14 inning marathon? CY gave them a gift. Maybe he loved Sandberg growing up? I would buy CY a cushion for the bench!

There are times when you have own up, admit you made a mistake, eat the investment, and move on.  That's what the Mets need to do with Chris Young once Eric Young is off the disabled list.  They would get better defense from Matt den Decker and finally find out what he can do at the plate.  Offensively, this team would not suffer because Chris Young is providing little, if any, production.  This would also enable them to possibly give Eric Campbell more playing time and he has done more with his bat.  CY has seen his number drop continuously over the past four years and shows no signs of turning it around and his defense is worse than his offense.

Horrible signing, terrible player, most people 1st, 2nd, and 3rd guessed this, just end the agony and cut this guy already.

Come the trade deadline more teams in the playoff hunt will be calling for Abreu then CY.  We will be stuck with CY.

I have to admit  that after Wright popped out I went to bed to read, knew the Mets would lose the game.

Let's be honest here the NL East is up for grabs right now. Any team that goes on a nice run can be in 1st including the Mets. The problem is we need a GM/Owners who are willing to make some big moves now instead of later.

To me it's a sign that 2014 is not even a bridge year it's just another losing year with even more questions to be answered come 2015.

So the word is that Montero is being sent down and Dice K will join the rotation until Gee gets back. I don't agree with this move at all, as they should be giving one of their young pitchers experience while Gee is out. If Collins needed a reliever so badly for today, send den dekker down and call up Nieuenhuis in a couple of days (what's really the difference overall between those two?). Keep the focus on developing one of your young pitchers.

Let me  tell you guys something.....Abreu is showing up all these so  called future personnel moves and it seems to me that they are "pipsqueaks" at best. Flores? d'Arnaud,? denDecker,? Tejada? Montaro? Neuhnhauis?  WTF is going on and we have a throw back like Abrue making these guys look like bums.

What is the  old saying 'the proof is in the pudding' We see it now Sandy.

The ball got blurry?  The Mets need to put CY on the DL and send him to an ophthalmologist, and for a brain scan.  I'm not even being funny, here.  There could be a medical reason he has not returned to the player he was before he smashed into the wall.  Forget the baseball aspect for a moment, CY is a terrific guy, and God forbid he has something like lingering fluid on his brain or a blood clot from the wall injury, it could be fatal if not addressed.  Blurry vision is nothing to screw around with.  As much as we all rag on him here, hoping he'll perform, he's a human being first.  Do the right thing and get this checked out.

Some people on here are insane. Put Abeeu at first? He's 40 and has NEVER played there before. He was our only hitter last night but people on here were screaming about putting den Dekker or Campbell out in right. Abreu hits so he plays.

This team needs hitters. As bad as Young's play was why does anyone think this team was going to score? They got 8 hits over 14 innings and never mounted a threat after the fifth. This offense is dreadful.

At least the Mets lead the league in players that have last names that start with a lower case "d".

My main issue with Chris Young is that he doesn't seem to be working on his game.  I'm seeing the same swings from him that I saw the few times i watched him in Oakland; he takes poor routes to balls (which, wind or no wind he ran an unnecessary 30 feet on that fly ball); and his throwing mechanics are suspect for someone with such a mediocre arm.  I'm sure i'm reading too much into it, but he seems to be resting on the laurels of his rookie season.  As for the Mets...it's not realistic that they'd cut him now (Last day of May).  Besides the fact that I don't believe any of the kids are ready for everyday service nor is Abreu, I doubt highly the Wilpons want to be obligated for his contract the rest of the year, only to see him sign with another squad for extra money in a prorated contract.

Wilpons.

@greekgod Uh, Abreu (who has been hitting) got out with the bases loaded late in the game. That's the way it seems to go - Abreu gets on base three prior times and then with the game on the line, NO ONE produced. No one. Our bullpen did a terrific job and the offense still looks shaky.

@1harris1 Young pitchers? They've been in A  ball, AA ball, and AAA ball......when do super stars start showing what they have? Late 20's?

Part of the problem with   baseball is that there are too many clubs and not enough talent and we get "pipsqueaks."

theglider

Montero is supposed to be a control pitcher but is walking a lot of batters and not going deep into games. Pitching in Vegas gives him the chance to work that out.

Wasn't Abreu a Hudgens find? Keep on hunting for strikes, baby!

@greekgod Flores needs to play everyday.  He was hitting everyone and everything for 2 weeks before he was called up - 5 HR in 14 days.  By sitting him 5 days out of 7, he's lost that consistency.  Play the guy.  He's 22 and has outgrown AAA.

@Doubleday I used to say this about Jason Bay ALL THE TIME.  Not being funny, it could simply be an eyesight thing, or something more serious like you mention.

@C.K. Dexter Haven Working on his game....You there at 11am to watch him working one on one with the outfielders coach??? Dumb comment... As much as this is hard to believe, CY is a major leaguer....

What other team would be interested in him now? He doesn't have the discipline or intensity to be a bench player .

1harris1

I hear you, but he's only 23 (I believe?). You can't give up on a guy his age after only four starts. A lot of pitchers need some time to figure things out on the MLB level, and it's not like keeping him around is going to really cost the team anything of consequence.

1harris1
1harris1

Yeah maybe, except that a lot of guys become afraid to pitch to batters to Vegas. Terrible place to develop pitching. Hopefully, things will work out for him.

C.K. Dexter Haven

@theglider  It's a controlled experiment, right? Montero came up, got a little taste of what it's like.  Didn't go as expected.  Well he'll be one of the first call ups Sept 1 (or slightly earlier if needed).  So basically he's got 3 months to go back to Vegas and figure out what he needs to sharpen.  I don't hate it. Besides, Matsuzaka is pitching well.  Give him a chance at the Marlon Byrd 2014 prize (1st class trip to a contender at the deadline in return for some AA or AAA depth.

@1harris1 Hudge found him, but he didn't ruin him.  Abreu is an old dog.  You don't mess with what works.

greekgod

@Doubleday @greekgod That could be well taken but so far Collins or Sandy see it a different way and I don't know what it is unless they have to play the guys with higher payrolls.

C.K. Dexter Haven

@hankypanky A team with the same thinking as Sandy..."the guy needs a chance.  Needs a change of scenery, and on a prorated contract, what's to lose?"  It's amazing how much MLB pays for "potential".
