Cesar Izturis signs with Houston

Infielder Cesar Izturis has signed a minor-league deal with the Houston Astros, with an invite to spring training (Heyman, Jan. 13).

The Mets had met with Iztruis’ agent earlier in the offseason (Lennon, Dec. 10), and viewed him as a possible backup infielder (Puma, Dec. 9).

Kid all you want, but this is actually kind of bad news. Izturis isn't a good player, but he's a veteran who can play shortstop, and that's something the Mets don't have. The only 2 shortstops we have are Tejada and Tovar. The list of available shortstops, even back ups, is incredibly tiny at this point. It makes me wonder if Sandy plans on signing Drew, making Tejada the backup middle infielder.

The backup SS market has pretty much dried up, and the fact that the Mets haven't signed any of these guys suggests to me they're far more interested in Drew than they're letting on.  If they didn't have much interest or didn't think they could sign him, they would have been more focused on finding an Izturis-esque backup.  If not Drew, then their best option by far is just to bring back Turner, no matter how down on him the FO might have been.

@Daniel Brennan good point...if they really planned to forge ahead with tejada, you think they would have signed a izturis type already
