News: Sheffield and Delgado Not Expected to Return

Roger Rubin in today’s Daily News says that Gary Sheffield and Carlos Delgado are not expected to play for the remainder of the season.

Sheffield has not appeared since August 28 as a pinch hitter in the Mets 5-2 loss to the Cubs, and has not started since August 24 in a 6-2 loss to the Phillies, and is currently suffering from back spasms.

Delgado was on his way back from surgery on a torn labrum in his hip before straining an oblique muscle in August, and he is not currently performing any baseball activities.

Delgado was hitting .298 with four home runs and 23 RBI in 26 games before being shutdown completely on May 10.

Both players will be free agents at the end of the season.
