Buzz: Molina could Sign With Mets by the End of the Week

According Tim Kurkjian of ESPN, a source says if negotiations continue to progress with the Mets and free-agent C Bengie Molina, the Mets can sign him in the next 48 to 72 hours.

Earlier today, Jon Heyman of said the Mets were sticking to their guns of a one year offer with a vesting option, and could turn their attention to Rod Barajas or possibly Yorvit Torrealba.

John Morosi of believes Molina has lowered his asking price, “raising the likelihood of a long-expected union with the Mets.”

According to Morosi, Molina is now willing to accept a two-year deal.

there has been a feeling from people connected to the team, around baseball, in New York, in media, and pretty much any other place i look, that molina will eventually sign a deal with the Mets, because, like i said yesterday, the Mets are expected to beat any other one-year, incentive–based offer he gets to be just a back-up mentor, whereas he can sign on to start for the Mets… of course, he’s still a free agent, and who knows what he’s thinking…

…the way i understand it, the Mets initially offered a one-year deal, with an easily-attainable second-year option, but molina wanted three years… the Mets let it be known they would be willing to guarentee the second season, while letting molina time to work the market and explore his options… if morosi is correct, perhaps his search is over, and he now finally realizes the Mets are his best destination… and so, if he signs, like i said a few days ago, it will probably be for a two-year deal…

…like i said last week, i am not a fan of molina… this is not a secret… and so i am still holding out hope they sign him to only a one-year contract… but, if it has to be two, i hope the Mets can propose to him the idea of being their starting catcher in year one, and then a back-up and mentor to, say, Josh Thole, in year two… i can handle that
