Buzz: Mets & Phillies are Watching Ben Sheets

this morning, i talked to a person close to the A’s, who said the Mets, Phillies and Rangers, and at least 10 other teams, have been keeping a close eye on RHP Ben Sheets

Sheets is 3–8 with a 4.89 ERA, while striking out 78 batters in 106 innings.  However, he has lasted at least six innings, while allowing three runs or less, in 11 of his 18 starts this season.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, Sheets does not project to be a Type A or B free agent, and so Oakland will not be rewarded compensatory draft picks should they keep him and he signs with a new team this off season.

He is due roughly $5 million, plus incentives, between now and the end of the season.

from what i can gather, Billy Beane would like to move him, and i don’t think it will cost all too much to get him… i know the Mets prefer Cliff Lee, and Ted Lilly, but sheets could make for a good, inexpensive, easier option, with a lot of upside, who, at the very least, could be a mid-rotation starter with experience down the stretch…
