Buster Olney of ESPN.com says rival talent evaluators think the Blue Jays could be the most aggressive team at the July 31 Trade Deadline, with players such as relief pitchers Scott Downs, Jason Frasor and Kevin Gregg.
According to Olney, “Gregg has had a nice season and could help a team like the Mets, who need a right-hander in middle relief.”
The 32–year-old Gregg has three blown saves this season as Toronto’s closer, but has a 3.82 ERA in 33 innings, during which he has struck out 37 batters and walked 18.
…i like his short-arm delivery… it sometimes reminds me the old Keith Foulke… there will not be a lot of relievers on the trade market this time around… if the Mets get a starter, Hisanori Takahashi goes to the bullpen… but, there is still a need for a legit set-up guy, who can strike people out and who Jerry Manuel can trust… gregg, if pitching well, can be that guy…
He is due roughly $1.25 million between now and the end of the season, though his contract has a $4.5 million club option for 2011, or a two-year, $8.75 million team option for 2011 and 2012.
