Buzz: Interest in Washburn, Sonnanstine on Market

According to FoxSports.com, the Mariners are still interested in bringing back free-agent LHP Jarrod Washburn, but he says the odds of him returning to Seattle are ‘probably not great.’

In February, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said on WFAN that the Mets liked Jon Garland better than Washburn, ‘yet they never got in the mix for Garland,’ and so he doesn’t think they’ll make an offer to Washburn either.

Speaking of starting pitchers…

Also on FoxSports.com, John Morosi and Ken Rosenthal say there will be plenty of trade rumors surrounding Rays RHP Andy Sonnanstine ‘over the final few weeks of spring training.’

Last season, Sonnastine, 26, was 6–9 with a 6.77 ERA in 22 games, including 18 starts.

According to the report, “Sonnanstine has minor league options remaining, so the Rays could send him to Class AAA without exposing him to waivers.”

FanGraphs projects he will win around seven games this season with an ERA around 4.50.
