Bullpen was better against Reds, but now no Parnell

The Mets bullpen pitched eight innings in three games against the Reds and allowed only two runs. They have up 12 runs in nine innings during the previous three games against the Nationals.

“We’ve always felt all along our bullpen was better than it started out,” Terry Collins said after Sunday’s loss to the Reds.

Jose Valverde will be the team’s closer, he said, now that Bobby Parnell will miss the rest of the season following Tommy John surgery.

Sandy Alderson said last week that he is more inclined to wait and see how things shake out in the big-league bullpen before making any additional roster moves. He said, with one or two exceptions (specifically Noah Syndergaard), his Triple-A starting pitchers will get time working out of the bullpen in April to see how they may handle a possible role with the big-league team later this season. This will also help limit their workload, allowing for more innings later in the season.

The way I understand it, as long as Jenrry Mejia is pitching well in the starting rotation, he will not be moved to the bullpen, despite having Daisuke Matsuzaka in Triple-A. However, because Mejia has significantly more upside than Dice-K, I’ve heard the rotation will stay the way it is.

This means, at least for the next couple of weeks, the bullpen is likely to be Valverde, Kyle Farnsworth, Gonzalez Germen, Jeurys Familia, Carlos Torres, Scott Rice and John Lannan. They looked awful against the Nationals, they looked better against the Reds. I think it’s a good-enough group. There will be days they’re awful, and days they’re good. I don’t expect they’ll ever be dominant, at least until May or so when the younger pitchers are considered for promotions from Triple-A.

I know Alderson has said it’s not likely to happen. However, it’s worth noting that Rafael Montero is can be called up in late April and still have a full year of a service time, so – in the event the front office wants to debut him in the big-league bullpen, and everyone in the rotation is doing well and healthy – Montero could be added to the big-league team sooner than later.

Well hopefully they have a plan c ,if valverde get injured...or needs rest if needing to go few days in a row...

They could look at Neftali Feliz from Texas (throwing 95-96 mph in AAA) and offer some young starting pitching.

Now we need to hunt for a closer and we all know how it will go. Sandy spending is like if Jack Tripper couldve had any of the blondes but picked little dark-haired, mousey Janet instead. Then tries to tell you how he prefers brunnettes or he would rather itelligence.... Meanwhile, the yankees are like larry up stairs, schtoopin' stewardesses two at a time....

Valverde always acts like he closed the WS when he gets a K.  Kind of amusing.  He cannot be popular with the opposition.

This just in: Sandy Alderson has just completed a deal for JJ Hoover.

We lost Parnell for the rest of the season but Valverde might be able to fill the role since he has closer experience.

That 10 million invested in Colon looks like such a waste. The mets have so many starters but no relievers or hitters. Sandy should have allocated 10 mil to greater needs.

Lannan looks lost in the pen. Plus, he is useless against lefties - which is the reason he is here.  I would have him out of there now.  I would rather bring up Montero and utilize him there. It is obvious, that they will have him and Thor in the pen this year.  I do not think Alderson is looking to trade anyone this year.

This is the worst bullpen I have ever seen.

Gotta love what's going on here...winning 2 of 3 from a very good Reds team...

with more wins to come!!!

Who could have seen this coming? How about EVERYONE!  I predicted that Valverde would take over the closer spot by late May. Guess I was too conservative. Yes, he has looked so thus far but I think pretty much 90% of MetsNation knows what's gonna happen. On the plus side Terry won't get the opportunity to overuse the guy if the team continues to swing the bat in this manner. Those last four AB's Sunday were among the worst I have ever seen as a Met fan. I wish Parnell well. At least he made the effort. But I have to wonder, once again, about the Met Medical staff.

It's pretty obvious that if the Mets were truly serious about this season, they would get a closer RIGHT NOW.

Let's face it. Even an internal optimist would be forced to admit that our bullpen is sub-par. You MIGHT be able to somehow get by with a workhorse closer. Valverde is not that guy.

If the Mets don't add anyone, I know that they have punted another season.  JMHO.

Why wouldn't Montero be subject to the Super 2? THats just stupid to claim.

It's really ashame That Sandy did not ADDRESS the bullpen. He knew Parnell was not 100%  to be counted on for the closers role. in my opinion This bullpen  will not be consistent and will waste good starting pitching when we get it. We already know we do not have an explosive offense and in a one run ballgame of which there will be many, it will result in mant losses

The way I understand it, as long as CLUELESS SANDY is the GM, the Mets will never have a good bullpen.

Wait, what?  Why isn't Montero subject to Super-2?

Can we get some clarity on that?

@helloboy  Odd that a guy who calls himself Hellboy cares what the opposition thinks? (about Velverde) Valverde has been around a long time, his behavior doesn't surprise anybody.

Go get em Hellboy!

We have starters but none are ready until at least mid season.

@arbt  In all likelyhood, having a pitcher like Colon (innings eater) will have the greatest positive impact on the bullpen throughout the season, than virtually any Bullpen Pitcher would

And a lot more losses as well

@ifti99  Oh come on.  They punted already.  The payroll is a joke.  They want to get the fans interested so they will attend games, but they are going to make no effort to be a playoff team.

@Christopher Soto Come on, do you actually expect them to actually explain something like this that no one has said before?

Kenneth Meltsner

@Carlos Rivera I agree with you. The bullpen has been an absolute MESS during his tenure here. John Lannan simply cannot pitch out of the bullpen and Kyle Farnsworth is clearly shot. Emulate the Cardinals and bring-up the kids. They cannot possibly do any worse.

Greg Baker
Greg Baker

@Carlos Rivera he did make a big push to sign Balfour.

we also have a glut of young, very good pitching about to be promoted.

Mr. SERCH
Mr. SERCH

@Carlos Rivera  yep. Already happening. We should've won 2 out of 3 in the Nats series, and an argument can be made that we could've swept. THE MOST frustrating thing as a Mets fan these last few years, is seeing the bullpen blow leads. We're not "supposed to" be good, our offense struggles....and then to see us just HAND LEADS and GAMES over to the other team...it's like a swift shoe to the nutz...

We can't sit around waiting and hoping for this bullpen to right itself. I'm not saying jettison 4 of them NOW and add new pieces, but evaluations of our AAA players should be happening RIGHT NOW. If by May, or even the last week of April, we have more performances like the Nats as opposed to the Reds, shuffling must happen quickly. And Hanrahan, Madsen, AND Gregg should all be signed to minor league deals to see what they have. If they're not ready, then you cut them free. If even just ONE of them shows something, call them up. If any of them can recapture 80% of their old form, it'd be a shot to the arm that this staff needs.

If we're getting stellar starting pitching, for a team Vegas picks to win 73 game, we can't have a bullpen coughing it up and blowing the rare chances we have to win.

helloboy

@bockers  The Wilpons do not have to spend if they do not want too, but Sandy has to manage the players coming up better and make more low level signings.  For the amount they are spending on Farnsworth, Lannan and Dice K, they can have Hanrahan and Gregg and Aceves under contacts. He spent 10M a year on Colon, with Degrom, Montero and Thor all ready to go.  He could have invested that money in Jose Daniel Abreu.  Instead of getting CY, he could have spent less on Bonafacio.  The team could have a lower payroll and yet be more talented.

Wilpons may not be the best owners, but Alderson is not a great GM either.  A good GM can still build a team better.

jjulian
jjulian

@bockers  I'm behind you.  I went from attending about 50 games a year to none.  They won't get me back until they make a real effort to win.

@Lets Go Mets! @MetsFan1962  Yeah. And Tom Seaver was responsible for our 2 pennants. It doesn't mean I would use him now. With our bullpen, you are asking him to be in 70+ games. I don't see it. I hope I'm wrong. and BTW, we still don't have a set up guy.

helloboy
helloboy

@jjulian @ifti99  Payroll does not equal effort to be a playoff team.  They really need one of the home grown offensive players to pan out.  If anybody thinks they are going out to add major payroll in the next few years, it is not going to happen.  They may add starting type Free Agent a year.

What they do need is a real bullpen and a real lead off guy, with more talent than Eric Young.

Carlos Rivera
Carlos Rivera

That's true, he gambled though not shoring it up with another arm or two. There is still time to get this right, if he tweaks this right, we may be able to sneak up on some teams.

Mr. SERCH

@Greg Baker @Carlos Rivera  yeah but that's a blessing in disguise, Balfour was a horror show in spring (yeah it's just spring, but his era rose every outing) and he was complaining about dead arm already in March...when he's healthy, i love him...but i dont think he'll last a 1/3 of a year this season, Balfour. He's been good in his 2 innings he's pitched in the reg season so far...but watch him

He also tried for Rodney, but TRYING and getting are 2 diff things. He's preached "bullpen bullpen bullpen" since he got here, and we've been in the bottom 5 in bullpen era since he has, and we gave out that amazing 2 year, 12 mil deal to Frank Frank also...something doesnt jive there lol!!!
