Buck among four players who could be traded, but will he?

John Buck 1 polaroidJohn Buck is among four players to possibly be traded before this summer’s Trade Deadline, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney.

In his blog post, Olney writes:

“Given how much the Mets have invested in the development of young pitchers such as Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler, they might prefer to keep Buck around all season. But if they were open to moving him — well, he’d probably be the best catcher available during the season.”

Buck hit .333 with 6 HR and 19 RBI in the first 12 games of this season. However, he’s batting .160 in his last six games.

He’ll be an interesting case. As Olney points out, I can totally see Sandy Alderson hanging on to Buck. By mid season he will likely return to being the defensively-sound, veteran leader with occasional power, which he’s been for most of his career. And, he’ll be doing this while having roughly $3 million left on his contract this season.

I’m not sure what a team will be willing to give up for his situation. I have no idea what the market is going to be like, but my hunch is that Buck’s market value will pale in comparison to keeping Buck’s leadership for Harvey, Zack Wheeler and Travis d’Arnaud (both of whom will likely be promoted by then).
