The Royals acquired OF Norichika Aoki from the Brewers in exchange for LHP Will Smith, the teams announced Thursday.
Aoki, 31, hit .286 with a .356 OBP, 20 stolen bases, 20 doubles, three triples, eight home runs and 37 RBI last year.
He will earn almost $2 million in 2014, after which he can become a free agent.
4:03 PM: The Mets inquired about Aoki, but Milwaukee wanted a controllable starting pitcher in return, instead of Ike Davis (Rosenthal).

It seems the Mets and Brewers discussed Aoki, and the Brewers had interest in Davis (see below), but clearly no deal could be worked out. I still believe the Mets would rather find a way to put Davis with Daniel Murphy and a pitching prospect for a better bat than a significantly better bat than Aoki. I have no idea if that deal exists, but I guess that’s what the Winter Meetings are for…
Nov. 20: The Brewers are more likely to trade OF Ryan Braun than Aoki for Davis, according to people familiar with the team’s thinking (Cerrone).
Nov. 11: The Brewers are unlikely to trade Aoki, according to a major-league executive familiar with the situation (Martino).
Nov. 11: The Mets and Brewers discussed Davis, but talks did not gain traction and a deal is unlikely at this time, according to a person with knowledge of the situation (Martino).
Nov. 7: Milwaukee is trying to make room for OF prospect Khris Davis, and they’re also looking for a left-handed power bat at first base (Sherman).
July 29: The Mets and Rangers contacted the Brewers about Aoki and were told he was more likely to be traded this winter (Cerrone).
