Ike Davis 9 (Baron)

Brewers do not want to trade for pitching for Ike

Brewers GM Doug Melvin said he’s still talking with the Mets about 1B Ike Davis, but the two sides have yet to see eye-to-eye on a deal (MLB.com, Jan. 7).

“We haven’t gotten to anything where we’re comfortable with the deal from our side, and he’s not been comfortable with the deal from his side,” Melvin said. “We do not want to give up pitching.”

In an effort to get pitching prospect for Davis, the Mets have been shot down when asking the Pirates for RHP Nick Kingham (Perrotto, Dec. 17), the Brewers for RHP Tyler Thornburg (McCalvy, Dec. 1) the O’s for LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (Encina, Jan. 4).

Enough with the media bash and the ridiculous trade stories about non deals.  Four first basemen go to spring training.  One gets a job.  A second becomes the back-up/platoon.  The rest go to AAA or get traded or released.  Simple.  Now can we please talk about something else?

Since we're talking rumors and fantasies anyway and since the Mets desperately need a shortstop and have young pitching to trade.and since the Brewers are all we hear about right now, may I ask the room what you would trade for Segurra? I would love to have him and EY Jr,, the top 2 base stealers in the league, as the top of the Mets order. I would obviously offer Davis and Tejada for starters and also incliude Montero, Flores and even Legares if it would get Segurra. I like him that much and the Brewers are a bad team that need players. Every person I offered in that trade would start for them. Fire away!

I think Alderson wanting to trade for pitching is perfectly reasonable. If the pitching he's asking for is too great, how about two mediocre arms, or someone effective but not such a high prospect? For the Brewers to just say no pitching sounds like collusion.

I mean other than maybe a backup catcher, what do they want to trade us, an awesome shortstop?

They're probably offering another first baseman. Fishy.

Ike Davis is about as in demand as Kevin Maas.   You couldn't get a ball bag for Ike Davis unless you were willing to assume 3/4s of his salary too.

All typos aside, you can simply leave this as the (fill in name of team) do not want to trade (fill in name of player or position) for Ike Davis. Try it, every answer will be correct.

"Brewers do not want to trade for pitching for Ike". Excellent grammar as always Metsblog

Why are the mets intent on getting pitching for him? I know you can "never have enough pitching" but the mets, if nothing else, are sort of strong in the young pitching department, YET they are extremely weak offensively in the minors. Not sure if I understand this approach at this point, after already securing guys like wheeler and syndergaard.

In related news, the clowns at the circus go round and round, round and round, round and round. And Ike Davis is still a Met - early in the morning.

Given that the Brewers didn't make a trade for Ike, this post is very surprising. In fact, I'm in shock. I guess I'd imagined that they'd settled on a great deal that both sides liked and were just refusing to make the deal. Out of spite.

What about Schoop from the Orioles?  If their #3 was too much, we could play Schoop at SS THIS year if we sent them Ike.  It makes Murphy totally expendable and he could net us a nice return as well.  Seems like a no brainer to me.

If we trade Davis, we free up some money where we can in turn sign someone like Drew. This same story is reported every day though. It isn't news anymore. Every single day we hear the same thing about Davis. They need to stop rehashing the same garbage over and over.

We need position prospects/players, why is Alderson so adamant about getting pitching in return when we have great pitching dept and prospects? Come on!

This isn't news.

I just understand why we're looking for a pitching prospect when we have other holes to fill. Unless he has a followup deal to make?

Just keep the damn guy.  Why trade him at his absolute lowest value?  And why?  So they can make room for Lucas Duda???

can we please make a new rule on metsblog that prevents any Ike or Drew posts unless there is any actual news and not just rehashed nothing.

This is from mlbtraderumors.com . Nothing new... the Brewers seem interested in waiting for the Mets to cut Davis then sign him as a project in ST.  For Davis this might not be the worst of destinations.  Bandbox stadium, very little in the way of expectations.  The media (all 2 of them) are more interested in the Ryan Braun situation than anything Davis can do.

@yankeehaterI am assuming Alderson wants to eventually use this pitcher as a chip in a bigger trade. SInce this does seem likely to happen, why not just trade Ike for any SS that is an upgrade over Tejada.. That shouldn't be too hard.

@yankeehater I couldn't agree more! We keep hearing that we're strong on MnL pitching, but weak on Offense, especially power bats. And the answer is to trade the guy who hit 32 HRs a year ago, for more MnL pitching?

How about a AAA SS with ML potential?

@ohmy I've noticed a bit of censorship on this site as well. Some of the stuff is so terrible they have to nix those of us who catch them on recycling of news, nonsense, and non-baked stories.

@drmetfan  Can never have enough pitching.  Best spot to have an excess... can always turn pitchers into position players via trades.

@nolrog In their defense it is January, you know, the time of year when baseball news is slow.

@mets2891 He has no value.  The vultures are circling and will take a chance on Ike after the Mets release him.

@Hodges14 i dont think the Mets will cut him, We do not have a clear cut first basemen on this team, he has the highest upside they would be dumb to jus release him.

@Hodges14 @drmetfan I know. I agree with you. But Davis, Duda and Murphy will not bring back a top pitching prospect. Alderson needs to understand that. If he want's to trade these guys he will get market value for them and the market value is not that high.

John Cucci
John Cucci

@Hodges14@mets2891 I'd be surprised if the Mets released him.  At this point they have nothing to lose by playing him.  He, instead of Duda, was on the block b/c A) he costs more and B) Mets knew Duda had no chance of netting anything.  I say play Ike and see what happens.  Let Duda get some cuts in AAA and if Ike is still garbage then we cross that bridge when we get to it.

Hodges14
Hodges14

@drmetfan @Hodges14 Davis isn't going to bring back anything at this point.  Seems like other teams that may be interested are content to wait for the Mets to release him and not have to give up any talent.
