Brender: Thoughts from PSL on Syndergaard and Colon

Mets pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard tossed a bullpen session today in front of the media, fans and the team’s front office.

Syndergaard has often been ranked as the team’s top pitching prospect, and one of the best three right-handed pitching prospects in baseball.

He will likely be capped around 145 inning pitched this year, regardless of where he’s pitching (NY Post, Feb. 17).

Bartolo Colon also tossed a bullpen session to Travis d’Arnaud

Rob Brender avatarRob Brender, MetsBlog:

Watching Mets pitchers and catchers during their initial stretch and warm-up period this morning, my goal was to see how 40-year-old Bartolo Colon interacted with his new teammates, especially the younger crop. I followed his group during pitcher’s fielding practice, which included right-handers Jenrry Mejia and Jacob deGrom. Judging by the large collection of media around me most of the morning, it appeared they also had the intention of making Colon their main focus for the day. As it turned out, it was 21-year-old Noah Syndergaard who eventually stole the show and the attention of the media throng.

Syndergaard and Colon, along with a host of other Mets hurlers, made their way to the 10-pack of pitching mounds at the northeast corner of the Port St. Lucie complex to throw their bullpen sessions as the final exercise of the day. Most of the team brass, including owners Jeff and Fred Wilpon, GM Sandy Alderson and manager Terry Collins were in attendance, as well as all credentialed media and a swarm of fans watching from behind barricades several hundred feet away.

While much of the focus was on the hefty Colon at the start of the event, heads quickly turned once the hulking Syndergaard took to the hill. His fastball was electric and his breaking balls had tremendous bite. It managed to even impress second-year Met Anthony Recker, who was given the chance to catch the phenom. He gave words of encouragement and support during the session and afterwards told Syndergaard to get his arm a little more in front of his body when he throws his breaking ball to get even more tilt.

“It can be even better,” Recker said as they met in the middle of the 10-pack.

This was my first time watching Noah throw in person. If it can get better than that the Mets have truly found another ace…

Is his Number 40 a reflection on how many Egg Mcmuffins he had that morning?

Feels like we have a very good chance of going to a 6-man rotation for a good part of this year, will do good for Colon to save a few innings and help us integrate in a pitcher like Thor into the rotation without over-extending them beyond inning limits.

I was impressed with Recker helping Syndergaard throw his breaking ball better.  Good to see.

I can live without a big bat because in all honesty there isn't a true big bat out there. Cruz is a huge question mark for the money he wants and length. Yet we need a SS gotta trade for one, because if they were shocked by what Peralta got this year wait until the free agent crop next year.

Morales would be nice to add because this team needs consistent bats. And no one at 1B gives you that option. So trade for Miller, Grigorious, Owens any of the 3 just get a real SS. And add a real first baseman and this team could make a run at the second wildcard spot.. Especially with Montero and Thor coming up later on in the year.

Adding any of those 3 SS's also starts to give you a young offensive nucleus to build around in D'arnaud, Lagares, Flores and any of the 3 SS's. Then you have Smith, Rosario, Nimmo, Plawecki, Gavin C. even if only half workout  you still have 5 players to work with.

This kid is special seen it for myself today. I an no scout but I will easily say the trio of Harvey, Thor, and Wheeler will be the best top 3 in baseball by 2016! . Also seen Mejia and Degrom and believe me either or could be a number 3.

I have three names that say "let's not get ahead of ourselves here boys"  Wilson, Pulsipher, Isringhausen.

Then again: Seaver Koosman, Ryan... ;-)

Hey Bill Costa Colon doesn't look too "skinny" on here. Has he been going to Golden Coral the last week or so?

Was Nelson Cruz, Kendrys Morales or Drew in camp to improve the offense. Oops, forgot we don't need bats. We spent too much. We are only 10 million short of last years budget. Weren't the Mets going to so call increase spending? Guess that didn't include the money for guys that didn't play or areno longer here. Wilpons and Anderson's math regarding what an increase in budget means is unbelievable. Then they say they'll spend more when the attendance goes up. Does anyone believe these guys anymore?

Harvey-Syndergaard-Wheeler-Niese-Mejia/Gee/Colon/Montero/deGrom/Matz

Those are 10 legit starting pitching options for 2015. I have to think the Mets will dangle Colon if he has another big year, and possibly Gee or Montero. Gotta give a little to get a little, and we need a big bat, badly.

Obviously everyone is excited by the pitching prospects, but we still need people to hit baseballs and drive-in runs.

Best starting rotation in baseball in 2015!

@Bo Beck  Could not agree more about Cruz. I think he would be a nightmare.

The problem is I think you're looking at the wrong shortstops. They won't be able to get Miller unless they give up a Wheeler or Syndergaard. And besides the Mariners would move Franklin first and he's best suited for 2b. The Dbacks aren't going to move Didi and besides the fact that most people think he might not hit enough at the ML level and Owings is a butcher with the glove and needs to play 2b.

I've said it a hundred times here, the guy they should go after is Sardinas from Texas. Unless they decide to dump Andrus because of his salary, he is blocked by Andrus and Profar but I'm not sure if a Montero + type deal would be enough

Whatever happens happens but the team is developing these players the best possible way they can. Generation K were rushed and overworked. If it doesn't pan out there really wasn't much else the team could have done.

Either way, it's an exciting time because these are the best arms the team has had in over 20 years and some of the best young arms in all of baseball.

@Wayne Labenda  Even if the team did have the money to spend, I'm glad Cruz, Morales, and Drew aren't here. They're not worth the money they are seeking and good teams avoid bad contracts. Something I'm surprised most mets fans don't remember.

@ac0814  If we are out of it early on (more than likely scenario with our line-up) I would assume they will look to unload Colon, Young, and Murphy more so than others.

@sosh  I can't even process a statement like that after watching every Harvey start last year. Can anyone? Haha

@Starz31  They could have given them better bats so they could have had a few less stressful innings, but yes I agree they have handled these pitchers very well for the most part, if you exclude letting themselves get exiled to Las Vegas last year.

@metfan @Starz31  Let's just hope for AAA Syracuse in 2015. That would make everything easier.
