Bobby Parnell gets extra day of rest, velocity at 80%

Bobby Parnell asked to get an extra day of rest between bullpen sessions, Dan Warthen told reporters in St. Lucie on Thursday (ESPN NY, Feb. 20).

Parnell threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and was scheduled to throw again today.

“I’m running off of Bobby 100 percent,” Warthen said. “He said he feels good, but he’s smart enough to tell me if he needs the extra day. I had him scheduled to throw today. He said, ‘I can throw, but how about an extra day?’”

According to Warthen, Parnell’s velocity is at around 80 percent, though his delivery is sound.

Parnell, who had herniated disc surgery last summer, figures to pitch in his first Grapefruit League game during mid-March.

Today's players are soft. Years ago, you never would have heard a player asking for an extra day of rest. It's a sign of the times.  SMH

Every piece of news like this with Parnell makes me shudder. I wonder what offers were on the table.

The most well-rested thing in camp is the Metsblog spell check button. USE IT!

Usually I'm the one pushing the panic button, but it probably means that he isn't fully in condition yet.  You cannot expect a guy coming off of neck surgery to be throwing 90 miles per hour in his first bullpen session, let alone throwing every other day.  Now, two or three weeks from now if the velocity doesn't come up and he still lacks stamina, then I'd worry.

Translation: Parnell might not be ready to fire his high 90s heat by opening day, so get ready for a few blown days early on and Valverde getting his chance in April.

I could use an extra day or rest too!

And so it begins with Parnell. Good thing Mets signed Valverde and Farnsworth!

@BringBackDaveTelghe One was definitely Rodney. He said so himself. Another was Balfour, as we already know. They did try.

I meant what could we have traded him for last year when his value was highest.
