Bobby Abreu batting leadoff?

Bobby Abreu is not being considered as a possible leadoff hitter, “because he drives in runs for us,” Terry Collins told reporters on Tuesday.

That said, “Abreu sees 4.14 pitches per plate appearance, which ranks third on the team among players with at least 60 plate appearances,” reporter Jared Diamond explains. “He chases pitches outside the strike zone just 22.7% of the time, the best on the team.  And when he does swing, he hits the ball hard.”

As such, despite Abreu’s age, his skill set still translates to being the team’s ideal leadoff hitter >> Read more in the Wall Street Journal.

Abreu is lightyears better than Recker, TDA, C Young,

Granderson etc

Where does anyone other than the writer say Abreu should lead off?

This article is nonsense. It implies Abreu is being considered, and then immediately has Collins saying he drives in too many runs to bat leadoff.

FAmazing that we live in an era where players are injected into the line-up because they make too much money. It's more like science fiction than baseball. If Alderson can't send Young to Vega the least he can do is to bat him eighth when he isn't on the bench. No team in their right mind would touch this guy in a package.

Well, he'd probably get on base a touch more than Eric Young but the guy runs like Smokey Burgess.

He needs a dolly to get around the bases, but Abreu hitting first is an interesting idea.  Nothing else seems to be working.  The first priority has to be moving Chris Young down, or out (can he hit 11th?).  I understand that they can't punt on a major signing with 2/3 of the season left, but it's really getting hard to watch.  They wouldn't be any worse off with Brown or even Kirk, and either of those guys might be better fits in the clubhouse, since they've already been there.

Bobby Bonilla is still under contract, why don't we try him leading off too.

Ok, Sure. What else is on?

And THIS is the reason I want Terry gone.  He can't even identify you have an OBP machine in Abreu, he sets the lineup up for Murphy and Wright.  "He drives in run" is the diatribe of a three year old.  Yeah....he puts the ball in play but this is evidence he is using the RBI stat to help manage the team.

Be thankful that Young isn't in the line-up tonight.

I feel like it's almost time for us to move on from Collins. I don't think he's the right guy going forward. He makes some really dumb mistakes. Almost like he's wants to be fired

If you choose to keep playing C Young, you may as well lead him off.  If for nothing else, to change his focus to just getting on base and take the pressure of driving in runs off of him.  You can't hit him in the middle of the order and otherwise you may as well cut your losses.

I hope Derek Jeter buys the mets lol anyway is it me or do the mets have success with old guys who want to continue their career sign vlad Guerrero lol

It's ashame the money wasted on C Young and Granderson when Abreu is better than both of them

Can we ask which players sidle up next to Abreu in the clubhouse or the dugout to ask his approach to hitting?  Besides this, doesn't this org see even the smallest of problems with the team relying so heavily on a 40 YR OLD position player?  I mean he's started 3 of the last 6, and 6 of the last 10.  Ya think maybe Sandy should reinforce the bench with some OTHER vet players?

i agree i don't want him to leadoff, bc i like him driving in runs, Maybe bat him 3rd.  Id like to see abreu wright murph as our middle of the order or some variation of that.  Murph is being wasted in the 2 hole in this lineup.  In a very good lineup he's a 2 hitter.  In this lineup he should be batting in more of an rbi spot, either 3rd or 5th.

I don't care where Bobby A. is in the line-up as long as he is in the line-up.

This is why I never read The Wall St. Journal.

Their news coverage is bad enough.

Consider "Abreu Leading Off" to be the sports equivalent to "Derivatives Swaps Will Save the Economy"!!

HE's 40 and starting 2x a week, maybe 3 is all he can handle! I'd love to see his bat control in the #2 hole when he does start though, then either EY or Larages get more pitches/chances to run and if not on base Abreau is defacto leadoff, later in a game this is a key RBI hole for pinch hitters have filled the #8/9 slots and may be on base..When Abreau plays, Murph and Wright can slide down a slot each to #3/4 with Grandy #5, Duda #6...regardless that OBP needs to be in the top 3 of the order!

Abreu should either be protecting Granderson from the 5-hole, or be our next batting coach.

"because he drives in runs for us"

All 8 of them?

Who does he drive in? You drive in runs because people get on base ahead of you, not because of where you hit in the order. Why punt the position in the order that bats most often when you have a guy with a .391 OBP?

If a manager can't grasp this basic concept and want to continue to quote out dated philosophies, perhaps someone more competent should be manager.

Patrick LeGrady

The dude draws walks and can hit, he might be the only one with close to a .400 OBP

Was Burgess faster than Lombardi I wonder?

@Mickey Jennifer Wind That's the problem though - this is CY....he hits .220, has 20 HR power and doesn't get on base.  Thinking he's going to alter his approach he's used for 15 or 20 years is crazy...

There's always the eighth spot and the bench. Las Vegas is out because Alderson will never permit it.

Thank you! It's almost embarassing that we are relying do much on this guy as a semi-regular. Just says a lot about the state of the team. Nothing against Abreu but this is asking a lot from this guy at this stage

@BB_PitchingGuy To be fair, Collins was asked this question right before his afternoon nap.  He's really only got a twenty minute window of usefulness every day.

@Mike Dell Italia We're over 1/3 of the way through the season and he is struggling to hit over .200 and provide consistent power. We'll see...

@jnuce Granderson is actually hitting LHP better than RHP this year. Duda is generally not starting against LHP, so you can just substitute Campbell for him.

BB_PitchingGuy

@Steven Matregrano He has 65 plate appearances. Over a full season at this pace he'd drive in about 70. If he batted leadoff, he'd score even more. With a .391 OBP why not put the person who gets on base most in the spot that gets to the plate the most?

If that's being an idiot and you want to quote RBI as a stat reflective of where a batter hits in the lineup rather than who gets on base in front of them, perhaps you'd like to follow the Phillies and call their fans stupid when you fail to understand things.

Slowly now: I want to put the best OBP at the top of the lineup and have others drive him in, whoever that may be. Your rant wasn't even in opposition to what i was saying. You said he's hitting well and act as if I said to bench him.
