Where things stand with Bartolo Colon

Mets officials do not expect to trade Bartolo Colon before Thursday, because they refuse to pay a portion of the $11 million due to him in 2015 (Puma, July 30). As recently as Monday, there was absolutely nothing going on (Martino, July 28).

Nevertheless, they remain open to a deal (Knobler, July 22), and Colon’s name remains in the rumor mill (MLB Trade Rumors, July 28).

The Mets, who would love to get a young hitter in return for Colon, may be willing to pay the rest of his 2014 money (Daily News, July 25).

However, the ultimate goal is to free themselves of his contract next season, otherwise they may keep him through July and try to again move him through waivers this August (Sherman, July 22) >> Read More.

The right deal is just not out there or the Mets would have to pick up part the pay and make the move. The Mets could trade Colon, pick up half of next year's contract and still have a high ceiling to spend before they even hit a $100M payroll for next year.

I think the real problem is that the Mets are being marginalized by other teams and players. It's not about wins and losses, I really thing it's about the organization.

Why not try to trade Colon, Cechini, and Murphy to Yankees for OF Judge and C Sanchez.  Flip a catcher to Chicago for a SS prospect.  Could be a cheap way to fill two positions of need without giving up high end pitching prospects.  Have Flores as a temp 2b to see how he can do, and if he struggles, Mets have Dilson Herrera in the next year or two and FA possibilities.

Also reading that the Marlins may be on the verge of acquiring John Lackey.

I get the idea other GM's don't like dealing with Sandy.

Meanwhile, Jeurys Familia leads the team in average, on base percentage, slugging, and OPS.

While Masterson is not an ace hes a capable starter and looks like the Cards got a decent starter ..for no matter what anyone says an unproven minor league OF.... meanwhile whats Sandy up to?

One of these days people will realize how money is the FIRST determining factor for this team. Baseball is second.

This team can't handle his 11M next year, plain and simple.

Cmon Sandy!... Trade Colon for a decent hitting prospect...YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!

Why are they trying to get rid of Colon? He's been stellar.  They're trying to clear payroll for what?  This years free agents are horrible!  Also the more they pay of the contract the better prospect they receive In return

If teams are asking for more than $3Mil I wouldn't do it either.  Colon is worth $8Mil for next year even at 42.  The prospect a team has to send Sandy is the cost for getting Colon for the stretch run this year.  But, Sandy has to be willing to pay up to $3Mil

The Wilpons are refusing to pickup part of Colon's contract to help a trade?

SHOCKER!!

Masterson is a Cardinal and they send young  OF James Ramsey to the Indians

@metzsuc You must not have been here for very long, people complained here plenty when they traded Dickey (how can you trade a Cy Young award Winner!), Beltran (there are no hitters on the team!), and Byrd (he's the only one who can hit!  Who the hell is Herrera and Black is just a nothing reliever!)

@metzsuc I just stopped at a hole because I knew you were crying. (By the way Jose Reyes is just as injury prone as Tulo)

@DON'T BE SLOPPY Probably because Sandy can never lose. When was the last time Sandy didn't get anything close to what he wanted? Sandy never loses a trade because if the other side isn't seeing what he's seeing he walks away.

That's why we might not get Tulo or anyone for this surplus of pitching; because Sandy won't give them what Tulo's actually worth, more than just Syndergaard, add Matz and Plawecki or Montero and we've got a better deal, but Sandy would never do that because he's losing more to fill the holes this team needs.

@Albert E Lewis Teasing the fans thinking that we had a chance to sign arguably the best shortstop in the major leagues.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Everyone be quiet, Sandy is sleeping until Friday.

@Tarheel11 So basically, the ultimate goal is to undo pretty much the entire 2013/2014 offseason which allows Sandy to make more of the same mistakes this offseason for which he'll have to undo the following season.  Sounds about right.

Yes for clearing payroll. That is what Sandy was brought here for.

@Mark Eulner Maybe for Tulo. Otherwise I disagree with moving Colon.

@C.K. Dexter Haven I agree.  Keep him.  None of our young pitchers can stay healthy, and Tolo has been fantastic.  I don't understand the $3M - Bartolo could easily get $11-12M for next year if he were a free agent, based on how he's been pitching.

@C.K. Dexter Haven Your math is off, at least the Mets math this team operates under.  Colon is actually worth -$11mil, not +$8 mil.

@darkflyer Yeah. This here is the New York Mets. We're all tired of losing so we complain every time we get and pray it actually does something and we start to win. Now we've got a new arguement on Pro-Tulo and Anti-Tulo

@metzsuc @DON'T BE SLOPPY

Sometimes you need to make a fair trade to move forward.  If Sandy holds out to win every trade, and none gets made, the Mets will be worse off.  They need more hitting.

The EY trade appeared like a fair trade at the time.  Thats the type of thing the Mets need to do, just up a level or three.

@Mark Eulner Valuable? You mean a total steal. An $11M solid pitcher compared to the others on the market who are worth more? A steal.

p8erbaghad

@tullydew BUT that part of the payroll was entirely Sandy's own doing from less than a year ago.

@C.K. Dexter Haven There is a big IF here. Montero and Thor MIGHT or MIGHT not be ready. Harvey? Some guys come right back from that surgery and some take a long while to get it going again. Don't get someone reaally good for Colon, then keep him. All in theory.

@sandybgone  Supposedly the Indians got a good young OF. 23 player picked in 2012 draft

He has made trades that help the team they traded with at that time. The Mets had to wait on talent to come around.Give our scouts credit.

@Albert E Lewis Has to be more to the deal because Masterson is a nothing starter and Ramsey is an excellent prospect.

@metzsuc Just a question, what do you think we should do about the shortstop scenario.

Also we have a lot more than Syndergaard, Plawecki and Matz. And his away stand is filled with two extreme pitchers parks and one of the best pitching teams in the MLB. I predict if Tulo came to the Mets he'd hit .290 and 25 home runs a year. Mets' need a clutch guy like Tulo too and he's just as injury prone as Reyes.

@Paul Rubin @Albert E Lewis Ramsey is basically very similar to what Kirk Nieuwenhuis was a couple years ago — older prospect, strikes out a lot, decent all-around tools, generally expected to be a fourth OF.
