Carlos Torres delivers

Bartolo Colon scratched, Carlos Torres will start

Bartolo Colon has been scratched from Monday’s start. Carlos Torres will start for the Mets.

Colon’s mother is critically ill and he is flying home to be with her, Terry Collins said.

Collins said he hopes to get four — maybe five — innings out of Torres.

The team expects to put Colon on the bereavement list on Tuesday, which will allow them to add another pitcher in his place.

Best of luck to Bartolo Colon and his mother. That's the kind of thing you don't wish on anyone.

Too bad Dice-K is still a bit of time away; this would have been the ideal spot for him. But what a job by Carlos Torres. Even though he has pitched terribly lately, a good team needs a guy like Torres, who can do something like this at a moment's notice without complaint and without his arm falling off (I hope).

Blessings to Bartolo's mom.  Some things are more important than baseball.

"Great" having AAA franchise out in Vegas

Greg Peavey,Jeff Walters,Eric Goeddel and Giancarlo Alvarado have all been pretty bad at AAA.

Off topic but did anyone see Collins go all the way down the dugout yesterday to shake Tejada's hand. That's his boy.  What manager does that? SMH

This is major trouble if he can only go 5......

This will likely make Torres unusable out of the pen for most of the week... Or it should. Right, Terry? It might even finish his usefulness for the rest of season. I mean, just ride those tires until they're bald. Also, is time for Famiglia and Mejia to switch roles? Mejia should probably have that hernia fixed now. Why wait?

Torres has filled in before and done a nice job,of course this was beforevTC led to CT arm falling off.

Oh man, best wishes to Colon and his family.I knew she had been diagnosed with cancer, yet the big guy has went out start after start and has pitched like the true professional that he is.

Sad news for a good guy and an Met fan favorite.

Matt Bowman and Cory Mazzoni have both been pitching well in AAA probably see them later when rosters expand...And Logan Verrett 10-5 in AAA so there are some others besides Thor to look at.

Let Harvey do a 5 inning bull pen. Probably better than what the Mess will get out of Torres.

This is why you don't have your AAA team in Las Vegas...

@Albert E Lewis Not adding Bowman due to roster issues. If it's not Dice-K, Germen is the obvious move.

Petition the new Commissioner to fix this horrible situation. Something's got change to make it more equitable.

@oleosmirf Spot on!  They probably could have called up someone from Binghamton though since the Cubs (much like the Mets) have a minor league offence.

@oleosmirf @Albert E Lewis They are at 39 on the roster. (CY release, 1 open spot.)  If there stupid Triple AAA franchise wasn't 3000 miles away, they could have done this.

@Chris Sullivan @Albert E Lewis  Be nice to see Zach Thornton come up and get a look see..but probably German since he has a .052 ERA there.

@7up17left @oleosmirf @Albert E Lewis The Mets 40 will be hugely overcrowded in November.  Adding someone who doesn't need to be there for Rule 5 purposes just to make 1 start is just bad management.

As of now, the following people are already on the 40 (or on the 60-day DL, but who have to be put back on the 40 in the offseason) who I'm sure will stay there as of the Rule 5 draft (28 total):
PITCHERS:  Black; Colon; deGrom; Edgin; Familia; Gee; Harvey; Matz; Mejia; Montero; Niese; Parnell; Torres; Walters; Wheeler (15)

CATCHERS:  TDA, Recker (2)

INFIELDERS:  Campbell; Duda; Flores; Murphy; Tovar; Wright (6)

OUTFIELDERS:  denDekker; Granderson; Lagares; Nieuwenhuis, Puello (5)

The following are on it now, and possible/probable to stay on the roster; several of these will be kept just to insure depth (12 total):

PITCHERS:  Carlyle; Eveland; German; Goeddel; Dice-K; Rice (6)

CATCHERS:  Centeno; Teagarden (2) - but probably only 1 of these, for a total of 3

INFIELDERS: Satin; Tejada (2)

OUTFIELDERS:  Brown; E.Young (2)

Now here's a partial list of people who have to be exposed to the Rule 5 draft in December if they aren't on the 40 (from tpgmets dot blogspot dot com), with my "MUST PROTECT" list in caps:

AAA:  Church; Gorski; LEATHERSICH; MAZZONI; Muno; SYNDERGAARD; Verett

AA:  Carrillo; Ceciliani; HERRERA; Huchingson; Kolarek; LARA; Lawley; Peavey; PILL; Rivera; Taijeron; Velasquez; YNOA

A+:  de la Cruz; Frenzel; Lugo;

Finally, there's the people who are NOT at risk for Rule 5, but who may need spots on the 40 in 2015 because they earn them (I'd say these are unlikely, and can probably replace a 60-day DL person -- but of this group, Reynolds is most likely to make it, as a backup middle IF):

Bowman; Plawecki; Reynolds; Conforto; Nimmo.

@exileinla @7up17left @oleosmirf @Albert E Lewis  Walters has been horrible in AAA.. something like a ERA of 8? Goeddel wasn't too great either..Peavey pretty bad too.

@Albert E Lewis But for Walters, this was the first time he went backwards; Goeddel is on my "less likely" list because he's been inconsistent.

I disagree about Peavey.  He can't handle Vegas, but has improved each time back at BIN.  Maybe he doesn't have the kind of stuff that makes him a mid-rotation starter or late inning reliever, but he may be worth having for things like a spot start, or the long man in the pen.  His BIN WHIP is 1.0...
