Andrew Brown or Nieuwenhuis likely to be demoted in favor of Chris Young

Mets OF Chris Young is expected to be activated from the disabled list before Friday’s game against the Braves.

Update – 7:04 p.m.: The Mets traded Ike Davis to the Pirates, opening up a spot on the 25-man roster for Young. Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Andrew Brown are still with the team.

2:30 p.m.: He felt tightness in his right quad during late March. He was unable to start Opening Day, played one inning in left field the next game and was later put on the disabled list.

GM Sandy Alderson indicated he is likely to demote an outfielder – not a first baseman – to make room on the roster for Young, leading to speculation that Andrew Brown or Kirk Nieuwenhuis may soon be heading back to Triple-A Las Vegas.

In two games with the Mets this season, Nieuwenhuis has 10 plate appearances and three hits, including a home run and four RBI.

Brown has 28 plate appearances spanning eight games, during which he has a double, one home run and five RBI.

Good luck to Ike, he'll hit 30 for Pirates. Duda? Still not sold on him, until he hits at HOME, but they had to make a move for both.

Get rid of Satin, have Brown play first base, he is more versatile.

Kirk has to be the one to stay until Lagares comes back and then at that point both Brown and Kirk can go to AAA unless the Mets get rid of one of their useless 1B roster spots.

The Mets just tweeted a picture of Kirk taking BP, so I guess it's Brown

Tricky question. Kirk is a mystery, wrapped in an enigma. Great first game. Return to form in the second (2 K's). Brown does provide a little RH pop on the bench. A far greater need for this team is another lefty in the bullpen. Has anyone proved worthy down in Vegas?

More importantly, how did Mejia's side session go?

Ike might not see it this way but the best move for him would be to go down to AAA.  It has nothing to do with performance, yeah he has not hit well, but that is more likely because he has very little consistency in his playing time.  I'm fine either way but the Mets need to send either Ike or Duda down.  It has nothing to do with carrying three first basemen and everything to do with these guys needing regular playing time.  I'm not blown away with Duda but he has been okay since being named the starter.  Therefore the Mets need to send Ike down and let him continue to work in AAA.  Who knows, maybe he benefits from hitting in Las Vegas and some teams become interested.

Wrong move. Ike should be sent down.

I'll give these guys love when they prove to be everyday players. Brown, Kirk, Satin, Flores etc all part time bench players despite all the hype in the minors. None would survive as a full time player on any team

Not rocket science here - the team only needs so many outfielders.

I want Kirk to be up.. I had enough of the "give these guys reps at AAA if they're not playing every day".. we need the best guys up here to fill multiple spots, I don't want lesser players cause a guy needs to play every day

I don't understand how both the Mets and what seems like a decent amount of fans have some kind of love affair with Satin. What has he ever done to deserve a spot on this team? He is not a good hitter and he can't field, but he was given a spot on this team by default because he hits right handed. Brown can play 1st base to atleast an equal level as Satin and he actually has power and can play the outfield. Satin should not be on this team.

You don't send Brown down, he's played well when we needed him too and he knows how to come/play off the bench. Collins will always start EY and he's forced to always start CY, this means Kirk will rot on the bench. So Kirk is the obvious choice to be sent down so he can continue playing everyday and stay hot for if we need him again before Lagares gets back. The bench is not a place for young hitters with potential.

Brown is probably staying, but can Kirk get some love from the Mets?

It's time to start winning games, not just developing Kirk for the future.  If he is better than Brown, keep him up.

Also, by the end of the month, it will be time to send Ike down and bring up Abreu if he keeps hitting.  He could be a great bat off the bench, and an emergency 1st baseman or outfielder.  They have to stop clogging up the team with three people who only play first.  (ok, so maybe Satin can play 3rd, but still to many such people.)

Kirk going down. Andrew is the only righty off the bench

Tough call...I know if Brown is sent down we have less righties on the bench.  But I would rather see what Nieuwenhuis can do.  He has speed and can play D.  To me Brown is a no-dimensional player who gives you the occassional hit/hr.  But I understand if they want to keep Kirk playing everyday and he has options.

@Chad Michael Ike's  at bats look terrible.  Send him down and keep Brown and Nieuwenhuis with the team.  Next one  to go should be Tejada.  He is not getting it done.  Let Flores come up and see what he can do with Quintanilla at short.

@ron3d2y I suppose Satin can play most positions if you need him to and can hit lefties decent enough to play when he has to.

@ron3d2yPretty easy.

Vs Left handed pitching for their careers:

Satin: 113 PA's: 310/.389/.470 .859 OPS and a 133 OPS+

Brown: 154PA's 229/.292/.379 .671 OPS and a 99 OPS+

Pretty clear who is the better platoon guy to hit against lefties.

@Victor Triguero kirk may be the better player, but brown keeps the bench more balanced in terms of LH/RH power

@ken1010

ken - i think ike goes down when lagares comes back ... still no room for abreu

have a fair number of good-ish OF now ... but just no good options at SS

mets2014
mets2014

@ken1010 you shouldn't look at bench players in terms of positions...as long as you have every position covered, there is no need...the bench should contain the biggest threats when the game is on the line...if two of them happen to be 1b, that's fine...the current bench has Quintanilla who can cover 2b/ss, satin who can cover 3b, davis who can cover 1b, recker who can catch and either brown or kirk for the OF

mets2014

@Anthony Fiore the thing is you aren't going to see what kirk could do since he will be a pinch hitter...IMO brown is the better choice since he is already accustomed to riding the pine

Don't wanna keep Kirk up here if he is not playing everyday though..which he won't..he is better off in triple a for now

Andrew Sodergren

@Chris Lyons I think he'll be fine to be here as the fourth outfielder if Lagares is back in a week. If it was longer than that, I'd tend to agree with you.
