Earlier this week, Jeff Wilpon said David Wright, Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee and Jon Niese are the only players guaranteed to be on the 2014 roster (Daily News, Oct. 29).
However, Wilpon was speaking “off the cuff,” Sandy Alderson said Wednesday (New York Post, Oct. 31).
“I think there are other guys who would qualify to be on equal stature,” Alderson added.
Alderson acknowledged that the team has more money to spend on new talent than it has had the last few off seasons, though he warned against expecting a shopping spree.
“Finances are always an issue, with every team,” he said. “But, certainly, we have a lot more flexibility than we’ve had in the past. We have much more room to maneuver than in recent years and I hope to take advantage of that maneuverability.”
Wilpon said Tuesday that the Mets are not handcuffed in any way in terms of payroll (Bergen Record, Oct. 28).
