Sandy Alderson scrum

Alderson sticks to 90 win statement

Sandy Alderson said that his 90 win proclamation isn’t so much a goal, but an expectation.

“It wasn’t a guarantee. It wasn’t a prediction. It was a challenge,” Alderson said (Rubin, March 31). “It’s important for us to change the conversation. The 90 wins is about setting a challenge.”

Alderson went on to say that “it’s time” for the Mets to get better and he wanted to “set a lofty goal and figure out how to achieve it.” (Burkhardt, March 31).

As for how that challenge made it into the media, the general manager said he wasn’t “thrilled when private conversations become public.”

“Happens all too frequently with the Mets,” Alderson said (Vorkunov, March 31).

If Tejada and Ike weren't here, and Harvey was healthy would he have predicted 120 wins?

They will definitely win 90 plus games this year...on MLB The Show.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement for his organization for which he's in charge.

Nobody thought the '97 team would win 88 games, but they did.

The only time a GM starts predicting big things,  is when they are trying to sell tickets.  For everybody who follows baseball,  this is insulting to the fan base to think we don't know better.

Sandy,  keep your predictions to yourself !!!

This reaffirms my belief that GM's should be suspended for using drugs also!!

For all us old enough to remember 10 years ago...which I assume you do because the Mets haven't been making any loyal fans since then, Granderson is akin to signing Mike Cameron. A good fielding .230 hitter who can hit 30 homeruns is NOT gonna make a 75 win team into a 90 win team with so many other holes. Get a clue Sandy

This guy has a unique ability to swindle, which is probably why he fits right in with ownership. He's literally done nothing to make this team better, hasn't even won 80 games in four years, and yet he's teflon. It's actually sort of impressive.

"It happens all too frequently with the Mets."  What?  Losing?  Yeah that's right and it's your job to get better players on the field.  Hell at this point I would just accept major league players.

winning one game vs Nats would be a surprise.

this is not on Sandy.  it on the owners.  the wilpons are the problem.  the payroll is a joke.

The entire narrative has always been what a mess this guy had to clean up, and how bad Omar crippled the franchise. The facts are that this was a viable, competitive team under Omar, and it's a wasteland with no hope of upward mobility under this snake oil salesman. You can't field a mildly competitive, 85 win team in four years?

Just look at the split squad spring training... err I mean opening day line up....that tells you everything you need to know about Sandy's 90 win bs

>>> Alderson went on to say that “it’s time” for the Mets to get better and he wanted to “set a lofty goal and figure out how to achieve it.”

Yeah, Sandy, it's time for the Mets to get better.  So it saddens me that you did nothing to improve the biggest weaknesses on the team (first base, SS).  How about it now, Sandy.  IT'S TIME FOR THE METS TO GET BETTER!!!

The thing with Sandy is that he's doing exactly what Mutt and Jeff want him to do and that is sell tickets for a team with a low payroll. I don't blame Sandy for cashing his paycheck. I blame ownership for paying the GM more than half the team...then expecting the fans to buy into a 90+ win fantasy

If they wanted to change the conversation, they could've spent the money to actually make the team better, instead of making an empty-headed "challenge" only the most clueless of fans would take seriously.

Here Sandy goes back tracking his words. He's done this ever since he walked in the door. He trashed Tejada and said SS was first order of buisness. And Tejada is still our SS. He tried running Ike out the door and Ike is still here. He doesn't realize every move he makes is looked at under a microscope. Guy still doesn't realize he's running a NY baseball team. For the 1,000 time Sandy this is not Oakland or San Diego. NYers are not clueless.

You mean the one from 17 years ago?  Considering how many current Mets were on that team, it isn't a ridiculous comparison at all.

@bklyndude  Not only that, it's the fans fault. They will spend if the fans support the team. That's a load of garbage from trash in the owner's box and front office...

@bklyndude  Did you even read his comments? He not only said it wasn't a prediction, but he also said that the statement was meant to stay private. Not sure why he'd lie about that.

Bill Young

@Sean Andrew Ingram  He's a better player than Cameron, but what you say is pretty much true. It was a PR move for an overrated player who won't ever be a part of a good Met team.

@Bill Young  Any person who profited from Madoff without looking at the financial statements to actually see HOW they were making a profit knew and was in one the scam. And we as Met fans continue to be scam by the Wilpons and Selig year after year,

@nagel100  Dude has been here four years, no one has a gun to his head. He is part of the problem.

@nagel100  He's the GM...it's on him as well.  He shouldn't guarantee 90 wins with this team, ever.

Kenneth Meltsner

@Bill Young Omar was seriously inept. Remember that guy who challenged the entire Binghamton Mets to a fight? But I really expected so much more from a guy with Sandy's pedigree.

DMA1968
DMA1968

Everyone can blame Alderson, but its all on the Wilpon's.  Alderson turned a 6 week rental into Wheeler.  He traded an extremely overrated knuckler into what the league believes is a top tier catcher and #1 level starter.

I've got no issue with Alderson other than he's stuck with an ownership that ties his hands.

PanchoVilla

@Bill Young  Everyone complains about Omar but he at least had us looking forward to competition each year.  He was made the scapegoat after the Madoff/Wilpon scheme.

upstaphan

@Bill Young Yup how many times were we fed the lie of "As soon as this contract comes off the books, we will spend the money more wisely"...

PanchoVilla

@nym68  Tell him to shut his mouth and not make predictions that are totally unrealistic.  It infuriates the fan base and makes him look more foolish over and over again.  I don't care if the Wilpon's are forcing him but then don't make the comments.  Simple.

Sandy does choose to lend his name and face to perpetuating this dishonesty. He's burned through whatever was left of his reputation for those paychecks.

upstaphan

@Frank Tangorra Oh but we were very interested in many players and had several trades in the works during the off season... the market just did no pan out like we thought it would...payroll was not an issue either...we'll do better next year though! promise!

Bill Young
Bill Young

@Frank Tangorra  He was hired as a small market GM to be a small market GM. That's what the Wil ponzi's want. I agree, he's terrible. But he is what he always was. This is on the ponzi schemers upstairs.

@Matt Gunther @bklyndude

If it was meant to be private,  how come it became public ?  I know it was meant to only be a challenge !!!

It became public because the Mets need to sell tickets and he is trying to convince the fans the Mets are real.

Without Matt Harvey or a real bullpen or a real 35 HR guy in the lineup,  it's silly for any organization to get into the prediction business.

Bryan McEntee
Bryan McEntee

@Bill Young Well considering Granderson signed a four year deal I hope your wrong.

Bill Young
Bill Young

@Sean Andrew Ingram @Bill Young  Definitely. You don't become a billionaire by ignoring your finances. You'd have to be extremely naive to think he didn't suspect something. And the fact that Selig forced out McCourt in LA and lets this family of crooks stay is a great example of the hypocrisy that is the good ole boys club of MLB.

@PanchoVilla @nagel100 Did you miss the part of the article where he said 90 wins was not a garuntee or a prediction- or are you ignoring that because it didn't fit with the complaint you wanted to make?

nagel100
nagel100

@PanchoVilla @nagel100  He should of said nothing. i agree but the problem is still the wilpons.  Mets will never be competitive with a payroll like this.

@DMA1968  Exactly. Fred Coupon brought Sandy here to so he can run the Oakland Mets. But even Beane can get the A's into the post-season most years

@DMA1968  Sandy hasn't had the resources, but even with what he's been given, he's underperformed and made bad signings.

@PanchoVilla Are you even reading the stories?  He said it wasn't a prediction and he didn't say it to the media.  And if the GM of your faviorite team wanting the team to win 90 games is infuriating, I'd suggest valium.

This. Why continue to hold this job if these are its terms? It's not like Sandy would be unable to find work.
