Sandy Alderson scrum

Again, Sandy Alderson jokes about his team’s finances

According to the Daily News, “Mets GM Sandy Alderson had the line of the night at the annual New York chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America dinner at the New York Hilton,” by again joking about his team’s finances.

“We each signed Japanese pitchers this week,” Alderson said, referring Masahiro Tanaka’s $155 million deal from the Yankees and Daisuke Matsuzaka’s minor-league contract from the Mets. “They’re paying $155 million and we’re paying our guy month to month.”

Last year at the same event, Alderson made a series of similar jokes about the team’s payroll and lack of production in the outfield. Earlier this winter, he joked about paying players with five dollar bills…

I wonder how funny Sandy Alderson thinks it will be when fans don't show up to citified this Summer

I think he is taking a veiled shot at ownership. Also, I remember everyone had to have Dice-K a few years ago, just like they did with Tanaka this year.

I was angry about this at first, but then I was just thinking:"If Billy Beane said something like this about his low budget Athletics everyone would laugh." Lets just not make fun of Sandy he's a good GM and spent a little money this offseason, he's not in a position to do much financially let's cut him some slack.

I live 2 hours away from Citi Field. I used to go to 8 to 10 games a summer but I am not spending my time or money to support a team that perpetually pretends like they are a real big league team. I will watch the games on television but I am boycotting going to the park until they get serious about not putting minor league talent of the big league stage.

Brewers sign Garza 4 years 50 mil, mets sign colon (40 years old) 2 years 20 million... enough said for the small market mets and the mighty milwaukee brewers.

Does anyone else see that he was being sarcastic? I would figure my fellow New Yorkers would pick up on this.

"Jokes" on us mets fans, Wilpons don't want to invest in the club, GM thinks he's pretty funny and we are up for another 75 win season, Jokes on anyone who enter citi field this season and pays money to see this team play. Wilpons seem fine with another mediocre season (what would that be 6 in a row).

Let's see if I can summarize:

1. sell the team

2. hope for Alderson's plane to crashing

3. Alderson is a disgrace

4. the Mets are a joke

5. Anderson is unaware that NY is a big market

town

6. Alderson is unaware that the Yankees share the

city with the Mets

7. Alderson is in collusion with Selig to insure that

the Yankees remain supreme

8. the team is broke

9. the team really isn't broke but they are not willing

spend the money they haven't got

God, what a bunch of morons.

mike23

This entire organization is one big "joke" so until the commissioner of baseball steps in and realizes that this type of losing and "bad jokes" will continue. Sell the team wilpons, mets need new ownership who can step in and save this team and make it legit again... if that somehow did occur I would get rid of Sandy and bring in a New GM as well.

The man is an absolute disgrace!!  Not that I'm pining over Omar, but the fact that he was even discussed this week speaks volumes.  Alderson shows how much he isn't a Mets fan with this treacherous statements!

Well, it IS a joke, so I can't blame the guy for making jokes about it.  Not sure how the Wilpon's feel about the jokes, but apparently Sandy is not worried about how they feel.

@Justin Cosgrove I see it pretty much the same way you do. It was also a swipe at the Yankees signing another Japanese pitcher with no MLB track record or experience for $155 million. Sort of reminds me of a certain Steinbrenner incident about a "toad".

@paulyr And what if Thor, Montero and Puello come up and Mets are in first place by mid July?

@mike23 Did Garza have 18 wins and an ERA in the 2's while pitching for an iffy team in the American League last year?  Has Matt Garza ever won over 15 games?  I get Garza is younger but I don't care what year it is Colon is the better pitcher.

Of course he was. But it is bad taste. As long as he's telling us one thing and doing nothing he isn't in a position to make jokes, even sarcastic ones.

Dude, c'mon now.  This is baseball, not life.. so relax with the whole wishing death on anyone act.

Also, do you really think Alderson has anything to do with any of this mess?   The answer is very simple; the team isn't built to make a lot of money, Fred and Saul have their minds in other places, the kid can't control the budget and the GM is  bascially a baseball
MacGyver trying to win in a situation without resources.

baseballnblues

@hankypanky What? You may be just a bit paranoid. And wishing a plane crash on someone is kinda f'd up.

@mike23What commissioner? lol  There's a creepy old guy who fights with his own Frankenstein named "Arod", brought steroids into baseball, ruined NL baseball in NYC, lost a world series and disenfranchised  African American athletes, but he's not a commissioner. It's like Fred stepping down, giving the team to Jeff and then pretending he's now not an owner.

Hodges14

@mike23 The absolute last think Selig wants is 2 dominant teams in NY.

jongonz718

@SuperDuper you hope his plane crashes? that makes you just as, if not more disgusting as you say he is..

Vin Santiago

@mike23 Let me continue to say that Colon is not clogging up a pipeline of pitching, this team isn't calling up any of the big minor league rotation talent until their Super 2 date has passed leaving you with Matasuaka and Colon till late june maybe july.  Would you rather have 2 different 20 game winners who have both historically competed for Cy Young awards more than once in their time helping to teach guys like Wheeler, Gee, Niese, and the rest of this young staff how to pitch in the major leagues or would you rather have a career .500 pitcher who has spent his entire career being all hype trade bait?

baseballnblues
baseballnblues

@jlga How is he doing nothing? Personally, I think he is doing the best job he can within the market he is dealing with. Sure, the Mets could go out and spend like the Yankees...but that would be the worst idea for this team. Perhaps they don't have the funds too... but I think that's a blessing in disguise because it keeps the Wilpons from signing another Bay or Vaughn. I'm sorry, but I am actually looking forward to the competition at first, a strong outfield, a top flight rotation (yes, I'm serious), and the further development of the young guys on this team.

baseballnblues
baseballnblues

@qualcomm Who are you? In all seriousness, you see this so accurately, without letting emotion get in your way like so many other angry folks around here. It's nice to see.

baseballnblues
baseballnblues

@qualcomm Yes! Inter-league play ruined NL baseball! YES! Even some of my Yankee fan friends see that.

qualcomm
qualcomm

@Hodges14@mike23 I don't think he thinks much about it to be honest.  I think 80% of his day is about trying to find angles where he's not accountable for any of MLBs problems. The other 20% are probably naps and counting money.

baseballnblues
baseballnblues

@Hodges14 Why is this? Of course MLB wants two dominant teams in NY. They're in different leagues, first of all...

baseballnblues
baseballnblues

@mike23@baseballnblues Let me clear that up. At this point, I'd rather not see Garza clogging up the pipeline for some of the younger pitchers coming up. Colon is here as a stopgap, and that should be the plan right now.

baseballnblues
baseballnblues

@qualcomm That was so well put. I completely agree with what you said. Still, I love the Mets and refuse to be a pessimist...even if it almost kills me every season.

qualcomm
qualcomm

@baseballnblues@jlga We don't have the business team in place to ever make this a Yankees style brand; so the income will never be there to spend wildly.  The Yankees glorify their history and sell fables and memories really well.   Our guys are selling the LA Dodgers, sportsmanship, restaurants, a dream of replacing chop shops with even more restaurants and the Jets.

It's a awkwardly run mom 'n pop and will probably stay that way through Fred's term as owner... it's just his way.  I'm sure he'd rather win than lose, but family, being a good sport, honoring 1950's Brooklyn and paying debt are way higher on his list.  If he was a truly competitive guy who lived in 2014 and needed to dominate, then the team would reflect that.   Lots of what the team tends to do from a marketing angle is very minor league... funny 80's bands, sleeping in the park, cheap chachki give-aways. random military themed stuff etc...

If Jeff ever takes over, I'd bet we see a nastier ownership and even if (like the Boss across town) we might not vibe with him, we'll probably be happier as a fan base.

baseballnblues
baseballnblues

@mike23 - I take exception to your comments. I dislike the Wilpons as much as the next Mets fan. Also, I don't like all of the moves they make. But I have been a fan of this team through even worse times than these and I always have faith as the season begins. I'm just like that. Talk with me in August,, and I may be singing a different tune. I like a glass is half full attitude, so I go with it. It's just baseball for goodness sake.

baseballnblues
baseballnblues

@jlga Completely understand your point of view, but I just don't see it so pessimistically. First of all, I put very little stock in all the stats getting thrown around these days. There is so much more to a player than lifetime or even last year's stats. Also, Granderson and Colon are certainly not bargain basement signings. I have seen this team since the early 1970's when I was a kid. To me, this is 1983 all over again...which is a good thing. I just don't see how it's so bad. Developing a sustainable competitive team takes time, some failures and growing pains...and I'm all for it.

mike23
mike23

@baseballnblues @jlga your the type of fan the wilpons are hoping for. You are ok with mediocre talent and buying into their "make it look like we're spending but not really" philosophy"... mets have lost for 5 straight years, their attendance is dropping every year and the wilpons are either not spending or still in a bad financial situation....mets fans have been very patient but its getting old very quick now, mets have to up their expectations from being a .500 team to winning a championship. Wilpons have to step up or as its been said many many times Sell.

jlga
jlga

Competition at first? Between two below .225 hitters? He signed bargain basement players. They will never sign a top quality free agent because, despite having many more millions than last year, they'll nickel and dime the fans. Remember, there are 8 players on this roster making league minimum. They've (Alderson's staff) done nothing but make promises. And our troubles continue at first, short, bullpen and bench.

And we'd better hope the outfielders play well, Lagarres isn't a one year wonder and that d'Arnoud can hit and stay healthy. Otherwise we will be here again in a year debating why the Mets are aaying "Wait until 2015."

Bryan McEntee
Bryan McEntee

He doesn't want two free spending New York teams because it would drive up free agent prices even more and be the final death blow to small market teams.
