Actors, not players, in Mets uniforms tip cap to Derek Jeter

Jordan Brand has released a commercial honoring Yankees SS Derek Jeter, who will play in his final All Star Game tonight >> See the video here.

In addition to cameo appearances by Michael Jordan, Spike Lee, Rudy Giuliani, Jon Lester, two Red Sox fans and Jay-Z, and more, the video shows three Mets players whose faces are intentionally blurred out.

However, according to Mets beat reporter Marc Carig, the people in uniform were actors, not actual players (Twitter, July 14).

I would've guessed Murphy, Campbell & Gee left to right.

Hey Jeter, if you want to retire before the season, don't let the door hit you on your way out.

I am sure if approached guys like Grandy and Wriight and Murphy to name a few would of been happy to represent the Mets we don't need no stinking actors . anyway Contrats to Jeter a class act but lets for our sake move on. He does not want his backside kissed so lets respect that and move on.

Overall, I thought it was a well-conceived commercial. But the whole idea of having the Mets players blurred out seems like a "joke" that fell very flat and was even kind of weird. I agree with other posters that having Wright tip his cap to represent the Mets (I'm sure David would have been more than happy to do it) would've worked better. And Spike Lee? I understand the history he has with the Jordan brand, but come on. He's universally identified as a Knicks fan; I've never seen him identified with the Yankees (as Crystal and Giuliani are).

Me and my friends can't stand him,cuz we are real met fans,I'm not a baseball fan ur right,I only care about the mets and Red Sox,but I'm true to the teams I like

I'd rather have given props to Chipper than this!

You aren't a true baseball fan. What has Jeter ever done to you?

Can they swing a bat? Put them in the lineup.

Is Jeter going to copy right tipping a cap? Did he invent it?

... and what did Seaver get?  Nothing.

Another embarrassing moment for the front office - a guy like Jeter deserves a tip of the cap from his peers, not actors.

Well, someone at Target Field thinks that Jeter is overrated.

I just don't get the love affair with Spike Lee.

Damn, that commercial was the realest, I really loved that commercial.  As much as I hate the Yankees and the opposition Jeter brought against us Mets, that was a true heroic tribute from fans of NY and the rest of the US to the best player in history.  This is the only time, I respect Jeter, because of the career he had.  He truly is the epitome of baseball.

The guy dove face first into the stands to catch a ball and came out bloody. He made a play against Oakland that still boggles the mind. He's won five titles and went to seven World Series. He's played shortstop on the most scrutinized team in sport and will finish #6 all time in hits.

You never hear about him throwing someone through a window or driving with a loaded gun. Sure he dates beautiful women but why not?

The guy plays hard all the time, wins and doesn't embarrass the franchise or their fans with his behavior. When he goes he will be missed.

ABC News also says it wasn't even filmed in Yankees Stadium, but at the Staten Island Yankees.

Jeter was a great player, but as with Cal Ripken, Jr., the worshipful treatment of him at the end is an embarrassment.

Read John Updike's masterful essay on Ted Williams' last game "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu" --- Fenway was only half full that day -- and Williams hit a HR on his last at bat.  No  "farewell tour," no jock sniffing idol worship, no fuss.  Just a ball game where one of the handful of greatest players in history finished up with dignity.

Newsflash:  Most of our 'actual' personnel paid to be in Mets uniforms are actors too, especially the manager.

Good, to hell with the Yankees.

WTF?!! Scandalous!! How dare they use acto... Oh, wait... I forgot... I don't care.

I expect a big fat juicy meatball down the center of the plate for Jeter to hit out during his at bat rendering the ASG even more of a PR stunt. Then a limo will slowly drive DJ around the bases as he tearfully waves farewell..

I am tired of all this D&*K Sucking.  Screw the Yankees, to hell with Jeter.  I do not care.  Have a nice life.  Congrats that you won championships.  Congrats for playing with virtual all-star teams.   Can we move on?  Can we stop talking about the Yankees?  You are justifying this crap continuing on Mets sites.

Why in the heck would Nike do that unless The Mets didn't want to be in the tribute. You mean to tell me that David Wright, Matt Harvey wouldn't be in it? Were they even asked? How classless to be honest with you. I heard Boomer and Carton talking about it this morning and said to myself, "great, now we Met fans are going to hear it" as if we would be cool with it. Were those fake Fire Fighters as well? was that a Mayor Giuliani impersonator as well? I'm a Met fan but I respect the hell out of Jeter. Nice going fellas.

It's so disgusting how this year has turned into one big Derek Jeter farewell party.

So? It's the organization paying respect to him, so it's fine. Not to mention, we're in the middle of the season. Actors doing this is fine, but where would the actual Mets find the time? Plus could be contract disputes with certain players. I mean they are still endorsing a company at the end of the day.

@Matt Cherry If you've lived in NYC and are a fan of baseball, you can't help but know about the rivalry between the Mets and Yankees and their respective fans.  I found the whole "anonymous Mets" salute to Jeter very funny and a nice way to pay tribute to him.  The rest of that tribute clip was serious, the anonymous Mets brought a little humor into what was a long but well-deserved tribute to a real class act - Derek Jeter.

@Matt Cherry I've seen him associated with the Yanks before. During the 04 ALCS he was all over TV doing interviews about the Yankees choke. He'll go to some games to.

@Matt Cherry it was cheesy like he will see that comerical and say so what nobody i know off the Mets. He will not non were most likely approached or they would of done it out of their own hearts.  and why was Jay Horowitz on the AL side.

David Matthew Feldman

@Matt Cherry I didn't get it either, but I realized Mr. Met and actors portraying Mets players did not want to be identified, so Mr. Met was blurred out and actors portrayed real Mets players because they didn't want to be identified either.

umm where have you been the past 20 years? do you remember the late 90's and early 2000's? It was Jeter all the time. Maybe you're a fan who doesn't live in ny? cause having yankee fans shove their rings in your face and bragging about how they beat you in a world series made me wish every one of those yankee players would retire already. If Jeter was such a class act why did he announce his retirement, full well knowing all the attention and presents he would get? Why didn't he just play the game and let us all know at the end of the year? The guy obviously craves the attention

Kevin VanTassell
Kevin VanTassell

If he finished with the Mets instead of the White/Red Sox it would have been a bigger deal. Another Mets screw up losing him after the 1983 season. Could you imagine the 1984 season with Seaver and Gooden on the same team?

@theglider Great player, first ballot HOF.  But all this fanfare is over the top.  Vlad played 16 years and put up monster numbers- did we do a Vlad Guerrero salute and farewell tour?

And how about maybe a little piece on the life and career of Tony Gwynn during this year's game- you think maybe they could fit that in this Jeter-fest?

Doubleday
Doubleday

@Kenneth Meltsner haha.  Funny, but despite his being a Yankee, Jeter was one heck of a ballplayer, and deserves a thank you for all he did for NY baseball over the years.

F him and his commercial. Chipper was 10 times the player. Did he do a Nike shot? Would you want the mets in it if he did? Let the firefighters and Rudy be on the little homage if they like the Yankees. The Mets dont need to stroke his ego any further
