48 hours to go, Mets still undecided about 1B

The Mets still are undecided who will be in the Opening Day lineup at first base Monday against Nationals RHP Stephen Strasburg (Bergen Record, Mar. 29).

“It’s a hard way to live but it’s the nature of the game, it’s the nature of the beast we have right now,” Terry Collins said Friday (Star-Ledger). “We have to get ready to make as many adjustments as we can. We certainly think we have the guys here that any given night you can replace somebody with somebody else and not miss a beat. We’re hoping that’s a case.”

The Mets have until noon Sunday to finalize their Opening Day, 25-man roster, at which time they’re also expected to announce the day’s starting lineup.

In the event both Lucas Duda and Ike Davis start hitting well, Collins said he would again consider using Duda in left field.

Mail IconMatthew Cerrone, Lead Writer of MetsBlog: The buzz around the team indicates Davis will be in the starting lineup Monday. Josh Satin will get most of the early-season starts against left-handed starting pitchers. But, if Davis goes hitless on Opening Day, don’t be surprised to see Duda at first the next game, then maybe back to Davis, then back to Duda, and so on, until one of the two get hot. At the very least, it sounds to me like the plan is to play both men until their trip to Los Angeles to the play the Angels in mid-April, when they’ll need a designated hitter. It will be time to make some sort of final decision after that, though, because this platoon-within-a-platoon can’t go on forever.

Maybe.....I hear Epstein's getting sick of Castro's act. Maybe Collins can straighten him out....maybe throw in a young pitcher who has no chance of breaking in the rotation too....

Thy both suck and both made the team. Yay I am excited!

Only my beloved Mets could maintain a 3-man platoon at 1B, where NONE of the three can hit RH pitching... sheesh!

Yeah thats a good plan.  Play Ike one day and Duda the next to give them no chance of heating up.  Its typical Mets.  Just choose one and call it a day.  In my opinion just give to Ike, if he falls flat by May bench him.  This flip flopping is not good for either player.

i think is was all smoke and mirrors, they were going to go with Davis all along no matter how bad he looked this spring, God help us! worth still is how they let Tejada be the starting short stop, the should have offer DeGrom and one other prospect and got Nick Franklin from Seattle. Hey, but what do i know i'm only one of many fans who the Wilpons could give a crap about.

No way in the world should Duda be playing the outfield on this team.  That is absolutely ridiculous.

Why?? Neither one is very good ..........Drew has missed 200 games the last 3 years and Morales is a DH these days, last time I checked no dh in the NL

Would you trade a good young ss for Davis or Duda?? lol

Frankly, you just can't carry them both on the same roster with Satin and 12 pitchers, unless you consider Duda the 5th outfielder.

"Until one of the two get hot."  Don't hold your breath...

Ike can play OF, he did it in college

I'll bet that Ed Kranepool or Keith Hernandez could do a better job then either of these 2 guys. And I mean Ed and Keith at their current age.

Oh the intrigue........ Which one of two bad to mediocre players will start the season for a bad to mediocre team?

Biggest disappointment of 2014 so far is having Tejada & Ike still on the team.

Mont5

Yeah ok Duda in LF. C'mon now we have been down this road before. Just give Duda the 1B job. Stop prolonging it.

Stop flipping out about this Duda in left field nonsense. The only way that happens is if both Davis and Duda are MASHING.. to the point where you care less about UZR and all those defensive metrics for Duda. Now, that's not likely to happen.. so stop freaking out. Collins has to prop up and instill confidence as part of his job. Relax. Games you will see Duda in left barring any unforseen injury this year : Maybe 2?

Again with the Duda in left field nonsense?  Haaa!  Unreal.

Just read the SI baseball edition prediction for the Mets this season.  They have the Mets being lucky to win 63 games.  That seems about right.

This team is in no better shape today than they were at any point last season.  Its a joke.

@rubiconx0  Considering Davis actually looked better than Duda did through spring I really don't know what you're complaining about... unless of course you're pro Satin. Satin is a Quadruple-A player that should not even be in the comptetion for a job like this. I give it to Davis, who we know has potential, over a guy who should be a career minor leaguer any day of the week

boodge106
boodge106

@rubiconx0  How do we know Seattle would accept that?  It sounds like they were asking the moon for Franklin.  Aside from that, he is projected as a 2nd basemen defensively, and an average one at that.  If we are going to compromise defense that much, might as well put Flores out there who costs us no prospects.

Nick Squatrito
Nick Squatrito

If you look at is Sandy has drafted much... The players he's drafted are lucky if they ever make it to the majors. At least he got the Smith pick right because he sure as hell botched the second pick in last years draft

Ill pass on both of them... just like every other team is doing...

Nick Squatrito

@Mont5  Cause Duda played so great in spring right? I don't understand why everyone is in love with this retarded looking oaf. At least we know Davis can hit 30. Duda not only can't hit with runners in scoring position he doesnt have the power Ike does. It's stupid to give this moron the job

@The Feels we will be out of it by the end of May, by then it wont matter who they run out there!

Except Satin hits lefties better than Davis or Duda.

@Mark Kelly @Joe De Sr.  What has Duda done? Davis has more potential and considering they both sucked all spring you give the job to the guy with the most potential. And no you don't give the job to Satin because he's a loser who wouldn't even be in this conversation if he was on any other team

@The Feels @Marc Singleton @Mark Kelly  Since your so into the stats here's one for you. The A's provided Colon last year with an average 6 runs per start. How the hell with this lineup are we putting up 6 runs for him per start? Grandy will provide a boost but if you're expecting what he did for the Yankees you're smoking something good. Wheeler will not nor will he ever be Harvey, sorry to tell you. Mejia can be a bright spot but lets see him actually stay healthy  for the first time in forever. Puello will not be a started for this team until next year unless EYj, Lagares, or CY really blow their chances, If you're expecting Syndergaard and Montero to come up and immediately become Cy Young favorites there is something wrong with you, d"Arnaud went 0 - for- the spring up until the last week. And no Colon did not win the Cy Young last year. Im as big a Mets fan as anyone else here and I really want to see them do well but as much as I'd love for what you predicted to happen I'm a realist. You're lucky if one of those good things you're projecting actually comes true. Let's not forget Wheeler still has control issues. Sorry to burst your bubble pal, I love the optimism, but you're only setting yourself up for a huge dissapointment

@Marc Singleton @The Feels @Mark Kelly  Have you already forgotten about who was getting consistent playing time for this team last year?  I'll give you a hint, it included Colin Cowgill, Rick Ankiel, Aaron Laffey, Sean Marcum, etc etc.  We won't be seeing those srcubs this year.  Just on that basis alone, not even taking into account the additions in the outfield and pitching, the team is improved.  And most people forget that after the first 3 weeks of the season, John Buck may have been the worst offensive catcher in the league.

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@Macacawitz @The Feels @Marc Singleton @Mark Kelly

My 2 cents on why are they better.

d'Arnaud will be more valuable than the C's they trotted out for full year last year. As poor as d'Arnaud played he had nearly the same production as Buck.

1st base is the same and can only be better. you can't get much worse there. Same with SS.

P i will say is a wash, Downgrade from Harvey to colon will be replaced by improvement of Wheeler along better options for 5th starter (DiceK aside).

OF will be MUCH better. Even if all you get is Granderson to replace Byrd Production, you get that with an additional 20 games or so. Chris Young will be better than what they trotted out in LF last year prior to EYJ. Same with Lagaras/CY/EYJ in CF.

How many wins better i can't tell you, but i would say 74 is a floor, 500+ is a ceiling. If i was putting a number i'd say 79 wins.

Macacawitz

@The Feels @Marc Singleton@Mark KellyThis is the same crap the Mets fed their fans last year during the d'Arnaud Watch.  Once he makes it to Flushing he'll be an immediate impact player.  It takes the vast majority of players years to establish themselves.  To assume that a group of Super Twooz are going to come up in June and have an immediate impact is beyond naive.

Marc Singleton
Marc Singleton

@The Feels @Marc Singleton@Mark Kelly3 homers this spring?!!  I didn't realize that. You're right!  The Mets are way better!  And those minor league guys are going to get called up and produce big time you say?

Yeah.  What was I thinking?

; )  Hey.  I hope you're right "Feels."

The Feels band

@Marc Singleton @Mark Kelly @The Feels  Really? Then what about 2 months into the season when we see Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero? How about Caesar Puello? Are you even aware of who these guys are? What about  full year of Wheeler and Mejia? Colon was the Cy Young last year moving to the NL... he stands to do well. D'arnaud's got 3 homers this spring. You seriously have to be a HUGE pessimist or incredibly ignorant to what's happening with the Mets this year to have the opinion that you have. The Mets in 2014, have SO much more talent on the 40 man roster.

Marc Singleton
Marc Singleton

@Mark Kelly @Marc Singleton@The FeelsI'll give you that.  63 is a very low number.  I'm expecting more like 74 wins.  But anyone who says the Mets are "way better" that last season is setting themselves up for disappointment.  They're the same team.  Colon for Harvey.  Granderson for Byrd.  Tejada still at short.  The 2 headed beast that is Duda and Davis still at first.  Same team.  Same horrible manager.  Same result.

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@Marc Singleton @The Feels  63 is ridiculous, that will not happen.

I'm not sure about 80+ but i'm in the 75-82ish range.

they aren't the worst team in baseball. They won 74 games last year and are as good if not better this year.

boodge106
boodge106

@Steven Matregrano @upstater @Marc Singleton  Exactly, Byrd came out of nowhere last year, and there is no good reason to expect he will put up similar numbers this year with Philly.  He will be decent, but not like he hit last year.  Meanwhile Granderson, aside from last year in a year when he had freak injuries from being hit by pitches, has produced at the plate year in and year out.  And he is a superior defender to Byrd.

Lucky to win 63 games?  That's the most dramatic statement I've ever heard about this team.  If you don't think they will be above .500 I can respect that, but this is just nonsense.

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@Steven Matregrano @upstater @Marc Singleton

Agreed worse no... But it will be hard to be BETTER. SO give them a wash right?

Add in improvements with CY, and if Lagaras plays every day... 1st and SS can't be as BAD while they will be bad.

SI is being ridiculous with 63 wins.
