10 Candidates and Counting

Sandy Alderson interviewed Cardinals 3B coach Jose Oquendo yesterday in Orlando, as he continues his search to hire a new manager.

The popular belief was that Oquendo would be the last candidate.  However, Alderson told reporters last night that he might still interview “one or two” more people before starting call-backs.

In the Bergen Record, Steve Popper writes:

”A Mets official said that Alderson now will reassess where the search is at before deciding whether to bring in more candidates or pick from the group that he already has spoken to.  Alderson originally had planned on having the second-round interviews conducted in Orlando… but that schedule now could be set back.”

So far, Oquendo, Clint Hurdle, Bob Melvin, Terry Collins, Chip Hale, Dave Jauss, Wally Backman, Ken Oberkfell, Don Wakamatsu and DeMarlo Hale have been interviewed.

The buzz from Citi Field suggests Collins, Melvin, Hale and Backman will almost certainly get second interviews, if for no other reason than not everyone in the front office had a chance to sit in on their original interview with Alderson.
