Stephen Drew rumors: Mets waiting for Drew to find a long-term deal elsewhere

The Mets remain interested in free agent SS Stephen Drew, and still haven’t ruled out signing him to a short-term deal, but they’re patiently waiting for Drew and his agent, Scott Boras, to find a longer-term deal elsewhere (Rieber, Jan. 18).

Drew is drawing interest from five to six teams (Cafardo, Jan. 12), and Boras has said Drew is willing to play other positions, which might make him more attractive to the Red Sox and Yankees (Gammons, Jan. 15).

Interested teams are still reluctant to offer Drew more than a one-year deal (Rosenthal, Jan. 5).

And the Mets front office is salivating as regards Tanaka and want to sign him for 2 years 17 mil, with a $25,000 incentive if he wins the Cy Young.  But there waiting to see what other teams will do.

Maybe someday a movie will be made about the offseason when Sandy and the Mets tried to reinvent how to win in mlb!

Identify players you need, and then sit back and wait until someone else signs him! interesting strategy.

Sign Drew already, I do not want to see half asleep Tejada or old man Omar playing 2nd. What are they waiting for

I have so lost what little interest I had in this guy. A thoroughly average SS in all facets of his game. You wanna save money, Sandy? Bring back Turner and start him if Tejada falters. I DO NOT want to see Omar Quintanilla start 95 games for this team in 2014.

Gavin C won't be ready for 3 years...just give Drew 3 damn yearS then

i'm over it..i love the careful way this team goes about players that aren't even that good...in 8 years, he's been fully healthy 3 times, and has never hit over .300...he's obviously better than tejada, but for what? so the mets can win 72 games instead of 68? someone is gonna give Drew 2 years, he deserves 2 years, but whoever that team is, is going to pay him more than the mets, so can we just move on from this? i'm so sick of this offseasons 'updates'...

Mets are waiting for Drew to find a better deal.

Davis is worthless.

Brewers won't trade Tyler Thornburg.

Mets save $300,000 on Dillon Gee.

like, what are we even talking about here?

Whether you think signing Drew is a good move or not, the headline is absurd. It might as well read "The NY Mets are patiently waiting for other teams to win the World Series first". Sometime you just got to shake your head about this team and what's written about them on this blog...smh.

This headline makes absolutely no sense.  If they're waiting for him to find a long term deal elsewhere, why are they "waiting" for him at all?  If he gets a long term deal elsewhere, he's not coming to the Mets.  The Mets are more like the loser boyfriend who hopes the girl he has his eye on gets dumped at the altar so he can swoop in and pick her up on the rebound.  With the Mets, it's rarely about what they want, what they're willing to go out and get.  Even if Drew is forced to take a one year deal, what's the chance it's going to be with the Mets?  Have they made him a one year offer yet?  I doubt it.

The Mets did the same thing with Michael Bourn and ended up losing out...

after a certain while...you kinda feel bad for Drew. it seems like no one values him as mucha as scott Boras values him

Sign Drew for two. I'd rather pay him for 2015 than have to rely on Tejada for 2014.

Randy Dela Cruz

Just give him 2 years and get done with it. Definitely better than another year of Tejada.

The Mets will make 40% of their 85 million dollar Payroll this year in Beer Sales Alone !!

eric88

Look what the Minn. Twins spent this winter. They raised their payroll in conjunction with the new 27 million each team got from the new Nat'l TV contract. We reacted by lowering payroll. Also the Mets have the Third highest income from local TV contract behind only LAD and NYY. Also 4th highest ticket prices.

No real Met fan should spend a penny going to Citi Field,, I have been a Met fan since 1967 this is this is a Crime,, taking our hard earned money to watch this team over the last 3  years.. Sick of the players we have are forced to root for,,,CLEAN HOUSE>>

IF you DOUBLE OUR PAYROLL we would still miss the LUXURY TAX by 20 million dollars!! What a disgrace !!!!

Can't wait until this whole thing is over.

Right now because he couldn't trade Ike, there is no money for Drew as per the WILPONZY 85 million $ payroll limit. Sandy, grow a pair and push back..

Frank Garza
Frank Garza

Maybe if we wait as long as we did for Ike Davis's market to develop, we'll get to see Drew sign with some other team.

David Wright

Right on. Drew would solve the Mets pathetic GLARING black hole that is the worst shortstop situation in baseball. Should've kicked the pile of trash that is Ike, Dud, Ruben and Quintanilla to the curb and applied that money toward Drew and Kendrys Morales. Also should've saved that 7.25M waste of Chris Young cash and just given left field to EYJ, which would solve our leadoff hitter/speed need.

jjong

@David Wright Do you  think Drew is a Quality player?  Yes, we do need a quality player in Drew or in Ruben at this point.  Yes We might not get production we need from Ruben but with Drew injured many times, is he the right choice?  Spend money yes but wisely.   Lastly, let us see if he gets long deal from someone.

@BringBackDaveTelgheYou know what WOULD be interesting, a few Met veterans of the 60's discussing what MLB was like in those post-Jim Crow days. Ed Charles was an actual character in 41.

@fast_eddie

It's a blog run by ignorant incompetent teenagers mostly. Cerrone and Baron would never make the staff of a high school newspaper. And it is indeed sad commentary on the Mets that they chose this rotten blog as the official team blog. Sad and appropriate.

Come over to the other blog everyone's moved to. Infinitely better in all ways.

This blog sucks rocks and the desertion of almost all of the intelligent regular commenters is truly poetic justice in action.

And yes, the headline is absurd beyond belief. Confusing, dumb, and meaningless.

matt520

@Tonio Did we really lose out? Michael Bourn is not worth the money he got and his production has already begun to slip, passing on him was the right move.

BringBackDaveTelghe

@bigdirty What's to feel bad about, he had a World Series ring, turned DOWN a qualifying offer and is now waiting it out to see where he falls.  He's clearly going to end up somewhere so I doubt he's exactly worried..

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@eric88 It's one thing if they had just been straight with the fans and said listen we're broke and we're going to cut way down. But they have lied about it the entire time. When SA first started the process the payroll was going to be over 100M. And then everytime he talked the number kept going down! That's not Sandy, that's ownership. Yet everyone rips Sandy.

But for a NY franchise to be outspent by the likes of teams like the Brewers is a disgrace. I don't think any of us want a Yankee type payroll. But at least go up to around 110m. If you're going to nickle and dime the payroll then stop charging big market ticket prices for a small market team.

Can just hope that once Selig retires MLB will finally decide to push the Wilpons to step up and try to field a competitive team.

eric88
eric88

@David Wright -- Your right. Dump IKE, DUDA, Q, Trade Murphy for young RP {Flores will be a superior and cheaper player} And like you said bring in Morales, Drew, and Dystra in mid may as 1b backup. Leave Tejada as utility and EY as 4th OF. Sandy wake up.

cmetsfan

@jjong Drew's a good fit in the sense that, Lugares or EYJ could lead off, and the SS position wouldn't be an easier out, at bottom of order.

@getalife @victor leo I think you're ever likely to see "half asleep Tejada or old man Omar" at 2nd...most likely to be found at SS.

@ReedRothchild

Yep, I've actually made the move - and yes, it's way better for sure. I just came back for a quick drive by, as you did, to see whats happening here and couldn't help but post after what I just read. Its simply a ridiculous headline.

eric88

@Rick Rimpici @eric88  Your right . That's 150 million on TV contracts and beer.  Plus 25 million for parking. These figures are dwarfed by the ticket , concession sales, and merchandizing, in stadium advertising {the most in sports}etc., you are talking probably over another 4 to 600 million dollars.  Payroll of 85mil, what a slap in our faces. Im staying home this year. Guaranteed

@Tarheel11 @eric88 When Sandy Alderson first became the GM the payroll was roughly $140M and he made statements that he expected the payroll to remain the same.

eric88

@Tarheel11 @eric88 -- Correction it was 115mil, got lowered to 100, than 95 {really93} and now 85 in our "contending 2014  team"

@sylow59@BringBackDaveTelgheEvery story on SNY isn't about the Mets and that's the Mets station, owned and operated by the Mets. Do you guys hammer them, too, for not having constant, new material every time you switch to the channel?
