Fernando Rodney 2 (AP)

The latest on the Mets pursuit of relief pitching…

The Mets have recently expressed interest in free agent RHP Fernando Rodney (Rubin, Jan. 24),

However, while the team has engaged Rodney’s agent, a team official has indicated signing Rodney is a long shot (Martin, Jan. 25).

The Mets, Orioles and two other teams are interested Rodney (Brown, Jan. 24), although Baltimore’s interest in Rodney is only, “lukewarm” at the moment (Ghiroli, Jan. 24).

The Mets are interested in signing a late-inning reliever with experience to a big league contract as both depth and insurance to Bobby Parnell. They recently made a significant offer to RHP Grant Balfour before he decided to sign with the Rays earlier this week (Rosenthal, Jan. 23; Rubin, Jan. 23).

They Mets have also been linked to free agent RHP Mitchell Boggs (Sherman, Dec. 9) but nothing appears imminent with him (Puma, Jan. 21).

Please, Mr. Alderson, not Rodney. I smell Frank Francisco in Rodney. Balfour was in a different class than Rodney. Hanrahan would be fine if he will be ready to pitch by April 1, but that is problematic.

Bottom line is, right now the Mets best bet, imo, is Jerome Williams. He hasn't fared all that well as a starter, but for the last 2 years in Anaheim as a reliever, he has been great. Check his splits.

Sign Rodney and Bailey for the bullpen.

Mets are interested in Cuban catcher Bello according to reports. Interesting, I guess any offense talent added to the upper minors would be a plus

Don't you love this team? Jeff and Sandy say they may still add a player or two...of course, there are no quality players left but the Mets may add a couple of guys.

I hear Juan Valdez is tired of promoting coffee and Justin Bieber may post bail before the season starts. Maybe Sandy could offer them contracts???

What a joke..

another guy i would not mind is Andrew Bailey still young and able to slot in to setup coming off TJ surgery like Hannihan.

This just in; the Mets have expressed interest in everybody, but nothing is imminent.    And though they have expressed interest in everybody, the front office indicates signing any one of these players is a long shot.  Stay tuned for the same update every hour, on the hour until the start of spring training.

The Mets lead the league in "engaging" free agents!

There are a lot of angry Met fans on this Blog. I can't blame them cause I'm one too.You have to give the new guys a chance though.I like Curtis, Young I'm not sure about especially for what they paid him. I don't like Drew.I'd rather wait for Hanley Ramirez next year. That's if they spend the money for him. What's wrong with Kemp?I know he is always hurt but trade for him and give him a shot.

What's the latest on Ike Drew?

Just as long as we never have to watch Joaquin Benoit at Citifield. That's a deal-breaker.

I don't understand this, the Mets have a major need in the bullpen, this guy would fill it, and yet the Mets aren't getting this done.  This is the kind of one step forward two steps back crap that the Wilpons have been playing for years.

Sandy said on the FAN with Francesa 3 weeks ago {listen}, we don't to have alineup were we have to depend on 2 or 3 guys to carry us. Thats why we will make more changes. WHERE????  More lies!! And Sandy, get thet smurk of your face every time you are on camera discussing Mets.. Your arrogent, but without a reason.

We should be able to get at least one of Drew or Rodney. If we were a real ny team we would sign both of them.

This post is just to create traffic. There is nothing new to report on Rodney. The Mets have interest on all remaining free agents. Are they going to make a move and sign them all? Very long shot. So Rodney is a long shot. However, 2 years for 10M might get it done if not less.

eric88
eric88

Another long shot. Whats the difference we have 4 guys in the lineup that hit . 210 or less last year plus Legares and Grandersen that hit .223 & .245 not. That is the worst opening day starting lineup in MLB HISTORY!!!!!!!!!

More fluff... These articles are merely filler.. There is no news but you have to say something when you run a blog to keep readers coming back. Blah

Not a fan of Rodney at all. Similar to Benitez in that he has very inconsistent performances, with most ending in heartbreak fashion

Ridiculous. Essentially the same story that you posted in the past two days. Changing the title doesn't make it a new story. Say something new or stay silent. It's insulting to your audience to waste their time.

I wish the Mets would become a NY team and sign Drew and Rodney...

@bcleveland at this point the people still left here should probably just stay here

@nysportfan He's 28 though and doesn't necessarily fit the Mets' needs at backup catcher. Still, signing a Cuban pro only costs money and there are no draft picks or slots involved, so it's not a bad thing to take a chance on.

I disagree with most of you, and yes i am tired of next year.I think they need just one more bonafide #4 hitter. Then this team can contend. A healthy closer wouldn't hurt either .

eric88
eric88

@Sergio p When do you get tired of "Next Year"? There is no signing Hanley or making any trade. Now that Sandy doesn't have gift wrapped Big Trade Pieces left by Minayia notice he NEVER makes a trade.

sickntired

Sergio, there's no way in hell Mets are getting Hanley. You're looking at multi year, multi million and Mets are too smart to give those kinda contracts. Let the stupid Yankees sign those players. We stick to the rejects and leftovers. Nothing against the new guys but they all have issues. Most importantly, they all have low BAs and OBP and strike out an awful lot. So get ready for long season. Sell the team!!!!!!!!

Haaa! The Yankees and Red Sox are keeping an eye on him.

@mets2891You don't understand it?  This is entirely consistent with previous activities (or lack thereof). It's a joke of a team.

Maybe we can talk Seaver or Gooden out of retirement and sign them to minor league contract. Heck, they can still pitch an inning and I'm sure they will keep to budget. Dan Warthen can work on them...

@Kyle Suta Too late on Drew, I already saw a Mets propaganda piece on Tejada's great work ethic this off-season in the Post.

@Kyle Suta  And Morales too and get rid of the two tackling dummies at !B.

Even worse, team OBP is around 300 and team will strike out a lot and not make much contact. Hey, what happened to moneyball?? It looks like Mets are all money and no ball...

nysportfan

@xgamblorx@nysportfan

well if they see enough talent where they think there is a chance for solid return on their investment and the price is reasonable why not? Maybe turn a couple of solid months as a backup into a piece at the deadline

Contend for what? Minor league team of the year? No lead off hitter, no cleanup hitter and OBP of around 300. We are long ways from contending in majors.

Bob Giacalone

@bill metsiacActually, that's what I'm doing...Still haven't found any, so I look at all of them for a good one--nothing has emerged. They all aren't very good.
