Team insiders feel signing Drew is more of a possibility than a probability, as it’s possible Drew’s agent, Scott Boras, is using the Mets to gain leverage with the Red Sox. It is believed Drew would return to Boston if he can only sign a shorter-term deal (Rubin, Jan. 5).
The Red Sox – who are the only other team reportedly interested in Drew – believe they have leverage in negotiations with Boras and could make a one-year, take-it-or-leave-it offer (Abraham, Dec. 27).
The Mets could look to the trade market to find a shortstop – such as Diamondbacks SS Didi Gregorious – but that would cost at least one prospect. Alternatively, they could go with Tejada and explore a deeper free agent class next winter (Rosenthal, Jan. 5).
The Mets have shown public support for SS Ruben Tejada (Ricciardi, Dec. 30), although it could only be a negotiation tactic with Boras as Sandy Alderson has concerns about the up-the-middle play of Tejada, Travis d’Arnaud, and Juan Lagares (Gammons, Jan. 2).
