Stephen Drew

Stephen Drew rumors: Mets remain the most logical suitor, could still return to Boston

The Mets remain the most logical landing spot for free agent SS Stephen Drew, but the Mets only want to sign him to a one- or a two-year deal (Rosenthal, Jan. 5Kernan, Dec. 23Cafardo, Dec. 22).

Team insiders feel signing Drew is more of a possibility than a probability, as it’s possible Drew’s agent, Scott Boras, is using the Mets to gain leverage with the Red Sox. It is believed Drew would return to Boston if he can only sign a shorter-term deal (Rubin, Jan. 5).

The Red Sox – who are the only other team reportedly interested in Drew – believe they have leverage in negotiations with Boras and could make a one-year, take-it-or-leave-it offer (Abraham, Dec. 27).

The Mets could look to the trade market to find a shortstop – such as Diamondbacks SS Didi Gregorious - but that would cost at least one prospect. Alternatively, they could go with Tejada and explore a deeper free agent class next winter (Rosenthal, Jan. 5).

The Mets have shown public support for SS Ruben Tejada (Ricciardi, Dec. 30), although it could only be a negotiation tactic with Boras as Sandy Alderson has concerns about the up-the-middle play of Tejada, Travis d’Arnaud, and Juan Lagares (Gammons, Jan. 2).

If they don't sign Drew we're organizing a protest!

This is an embarrassment! We won't even offer him a two year deal. Instead we will go into the season with the worst SS in baseball. Drew isn't a superstar, but he does make the team better. He's better than Tejada offensively and defensively, hands down.

The price for Didi is ridiculous. They are stupid to give up a Montero type pitching prospect for this guy. And they are not getting one of the SS in net years class. And if they did they would have to overpay so badly it would be stupid. You have this guy falling into your lap. Perfect storm for the Mets. Get him on two years and be done with it.

Sandy's right to play a waiting game with him right now. Besides, he's a Boras client, isn't he?

If the Mets could sign Drew they would have already! The Mets are in the top 6 in revenue in MLB and projected to be bottom 6 in MLB payroll!  85 million is down for the sixth straight year.

I don't see why the Red Sox would re-sign Drew. They have Xander Bogaerts at SS and Will Middlebrooks at 3B. Why sign a guy at the expense of delaying one of those young players?

I think the Mets will be able to land Drew on a 2-year 16 million contract.

Which means he will sign with someone else!

When you have 40 million committed to payroll before the season starts it's not that hard...

I had a dream the Mets got Owings from Arizona. The deal involved Owings, Putz, Gallardo, Ike, Montero and Parnell.

Arizona gets: Gallardo, Parnell and Montero.

Milwaukee gets: Putz and Ike and prosect from AZ.

Mets get: Owings and mid level prospect from MIL.

It was just a dream lol.

Not a good deal. The closer you get to spring training , the more likely that other teams with too many shortstops will part with one of them. That is when the Mets should move. If Mets overpay, it should be for very good players.

I would LOVE to see Sandy sign Drew AND Morales!  We were promised a different team.  As it stands right now, we are looking at basically the same pathetic lineup.

Sure, pitching prospects are great.  But scoring runs is kind of important too.

Call the Red Sox and tell them we'll stay off of Drew if we can work out a deal for Bogaerts and offer whomever we feel is fair.from.Montero, DeGromm etc. If we can work something out, we have our shortstop of the future making no money, our 3rd rd pick while the Sox have back their starting shortstop on the cheay and an excellent pitching prospect.

The Drew scenario has two caveats: 1. dealing with Boras is like wrestling with a rattlesnake

                                                     2. there's an underlying feeling that Drew would rather return to the Sox, even though he would be second fiddle

a better idea out of the box instead of signing Drew . Mets give a one year pillow contract to Nelson Cruz and move him to first base sure he has never played it that i know but he cant be any worse then Lucas Duda,  we could use the bat.

Only want him if he doesn't interfere with us getting a stud SS in the offseason.

Repeat after me: One-Year-Deal! One-Year-Deal!

That's collusion and the team would face a grievance from the the player affected, his agent and the union.

If the Sox sign him, it will mean they're not convinced Bogaerts is ready to handle the job, so Drew will start...otherwise why pay him $12M? I think they don't want to be in a position where they're starting both Bradley and Bogaerts coming off a championship and the think Bradley is the more ready of the two...

I like the idea of signing Cruz whose power from the right side is muck needed but not for 1st base. Stock him in RF and let Murphy plays 1 st base so E Young can play 2nd base and bat lead off

@Ron Davis A pillow contract is done for a player to rebuild his value before he tries again for a long term deal in free agency.  So if he has to settle for a one year deal, he's going to look for the most advantageous spot for him to rebuild value.  Coming to hit at Citi and learn a new position which he has literally never played before would not remotely be what he is looking for.

Oh god no. Cruz is godawful defensively and used PEDS and a small ballpark to so his power numbers

Why would anyone of reasonably sound mind sign with the Mets for one year when he's got a comparable offer on the table from the reigning world champions? Two years is the minimum it will take to get him, and it might even take an option beyond that.

Even obese 40yr old pitchers get 2 year deals these days.
