Stephen Drew

Stephen Drew rumors: Could wait to sign until June

Free agent SS Stephen Drew could wait until June to sign with a team, his agent Scott Boras said (Rosenthal, Feb. 24).

Drew could wait to sign to avoid getting another qualifying offer at the end of this season, as only players who spend the entire year with a team can be extended a qualifying offer. Also, by waiting until June, the team that signs him will not have to forfeit a draft pick.

The Mets reportedly offered a one-year, $9.5 million deal to Drew, but he’s still looking for more money and years (Heyman, Feb. 21).

Since he has not signed with a big-league team, he started his spring training at the new Scott Boras training facility in North Miami last week (Cafardo, Feb. 16).

The Mets and Red Sox are among the four teams reportedly still showing interest inDrew (Bowden, Feb. 18).

Boras is looking really bad on this.

June that's insane he should've taken the mets offer or someone's offer by now he was already offered more money than Nelson Cruz and Cruz is a better player

He thinks he is better then he is because boras is his agent like most of scotts clients they are simply greedy.

Draft pick or not, the guy isn't worth 14 million.  Some other teams might bite if they don't have to forfeit their draft pick but I hope it is not the Mets unless they can sign him for 1 year and less than 10 million.

If I'm Drew I am none too happy with the job Boras has done. Met offer seems perfectly within reason. For some reason I'm reminded of Mike Bordick who did everything humanly possible to play himself OFF the team. Hate to beat a dead horse but Sandy shoulda' signed Peralta.

This is all Posturing.  No way he waits till June knowing next year there will be a crop of SS AND no one really wants to spend on him.  He signs soon.

This is a PURE bluff.  Say you wait until June....he's not going to get $4M-$5M for a half season and who knows how long until he is ready by then.  It would be the ultimate mistake on their part if it happens.

This is simply Boras scrambling. He obviously misread the market with Drew and the way that teams are over valuing their draft picks these days. Exactly why Tony Clark is now hinting at changing the QO rules because it is hurting the players, in this case Drew and Morales.

Boras screwed up and now is scrambling to wipe the stain off his ego. I'm sure Drew is quite pissed. But this is all Boras' ego.

Thought by now that some team would have DREW up the papers already...lol

its become sad at this point he just fire Boras for rejecting 14.1 mill for a guy who isnt worth 8 million just fire boras and sign a deall

This is blustering.  Drew doesn't want to wait until June, risk a slow start, and then a bad line at the end of the season.  Boras is getting desperate and playing the weak hand he has.

Drew's case, while driving me crazy with the daily updates, could make some players think about declining the team's qualifying offers. Players like Drew and Morales ( good players with issues) will think twice to turning down $14 million for one season.

Great we'll have to read here for months about Drew. Trade with the Marniers or D Backs for a young SS for no other reason then to stop the daily Drew updates.

If he waits until June to sign with a team, this could prove to be grave mistake for Drew. In fact, I don't think any player has waited that long out of free agency to sign. This dude could be unemployed for the rest of the year! There's no one in baseball who's going to be like "Go get me Drew. That kid is a game changer!!"

Scott Borass is a joke.

We don't need Drew and Boras playing the money game. Let some other team exhaust their funds on him.

At this point, Drew is obviously not in it to win...

He and Boras can't take their greediness and shove it. I hope that jerk off gets a 1 million dollar deal and is forced to sign it. Turns down a 14.1 mil deal from the red sox and expects more. Let him sit in it.

Loving the hate for Boras on this topic.  Been saying for years that the Mets should avoid any player represented by him.

I hope this maybe gets people to think twice before signing up with Boras as an agent.

Drew is not a player the Mets need to spend any more time worrying about. He is 100% in it for the money. I woukd rather give Flores a shot.

This isn't even the Mets fault anymore.  This guy and Boras are so full of themselves its insane.  The guy can't get a two year contract now what the hell makes him think that come June someones going to want him?

To all who are calling Scott Boras an idiot, please Google an article from The Atlantic called "If Everyone Else is Such an Idiot, How Come You're Not Rich?"

Scott Boras is the most successful sports agent to ever walk this earth. Whatever the reasons for Drew not signing yet, I guarantee you it's not because his agent is a moron. Maybe someone who has negotiated billions in contracts (including the biggest one in the sport) knows more about the free agent market than you?

Both Drew and Boras will look like complete clowns if this happens. It won't.

I would rather see the Mets try Wilmer Flores at SS than to waste any money on Drew.

As Larry the Cable Guy says--"Now that's funny right there".  Do they make these stories up as they go. When there is no Drew story for a few days, one gets made up.  It will take until June for Drew and Bora$ to wipe the egg of their faces.

So wont accept $9.5M for a full season, how much does he think he'll get for June-Sep?

And does not want another qualifying offer next year? Yeah right....

Mr. SERCH

Boras looks like a COMPLETE fool with this....heck, ever since they changed QO/draft pick system, he's been mishandling his clients. He usualy winds up wiht his payday regardless, but he has just been ill equipped to handle this change......wait til June?? lol....who would WANT to do that??? He wont be game ready, while everyone else has 2 months of ball under their belt...it makes Boras and Drew look COMPLETELY selfish and money hungry...this whole situation is a cluster fuff, AND now that big load Boras is just making everyone look worse.

Drew, man up, take whatever is out there in whatever situation gives u the best chance to do what you get paid to---PLAY BASEBALL EVERYDAY....tear the cover off the ball and go back out and justifiably EARN your next, big, long-term contract

Boras has a lot of astronaughts and not enough planets to land on.

helloboy

Well, that would surely mean that Boras gets fired.  Clearly, he has not done well for Drew.  Boras will get even less next year, unless many of the other SS get signed before they hit FA.  There are scheduled to be at least 3, if not 4, SS better than him with next year's class.  Drew will not have many suitors again as a result.

The Mets will have even less reason to sign Drew in June than they do now.  I think that Tejada will be better than expected and get people off his back for starting, even if this is a .250 BA/320 OBP deal.  He will be the 8th palce hitter and the Mets will  have already answered their lead off issue by that point in some way.

Sorry Drew, your life as a regular MLB starter may be over.

Kevin VanTassell
Kevin VanTassell

There's no way Drew doesn't sign until June, this is just another Boras ploy to get teams to rise their offer. If Drew can't get the deal he wants, his best chance is to sign for a year and have a big healthy year, playing half a year won't help him.

Victor Triguero
Victor Triguero

@Vin Santiago  As much as I hate to agree...that is true

He is valuing himself way too much...

But you can thank the Cardinals for that...if Johnny Peralta can get what he did, Drew is not going to sign for a ridiculously less amount of money. We forget to remember that most players want to get paid and they care more about that then winning.

Eddie_Dean
Eddie_Dean

@DIY Degree The guy might be good at what he does, but he's not infallible. He DOES make mistakes occasionally, and I think it's often with guys like Drew (mid-level free agents who don't attract multiple suitors in free agency).

A few months ago Drew could've signed for $14 million. Now, as far as we know anyway, the best offer on the table is the Mets' $9.5 million one. Could he still get more? Sure, and maybe he will. But right now I'd say it's looking more and more likely as though in this case at least, he's overplayed his hand.

Kapalua Mak
Kapalua Mak

@DIY Degree  Yes.  And ARod and Barry Bonds are two of the most successful baseball players to ever walk on earth.  Your point is quite valid but a lot of people don't accept success attained with no ethics or morality.  Scott Boras has been good at getting top dollar for his clients but it appears that more and more teams are catching on.  With the kind of money that even average players make, many players are accepting less money to stay with a team rather than the Boras approach.

stemog
stemog

@DIY Degree Yet, he does make mistakes and this is one time he made a mistake. Drew could've had $14.1 if he accepted the qualifying offer. Now if he signs in June he won't get $14 over 2014 and 2015. Real genius.

Ed Yano
Ed Yano

Or the Yanks will realize Jeter cannot play SS anymore and sign Drew for 45 mil for 3 years, just because they can.

dukewillie
dukewillie

@Kevin VanTassell  And in light of what you wrote Kevin,  it would behoove Drew to play this year as a full time SS (and prep himself for next year's FA), something the Mets are offering him!

DIY Degree
DIY Degree

@stemog @DIY Degree  My guess is he's floating the possibility of signing in June as a negotiating ploy. He doesn't have a lot of leverage right now. Holding out is a way to potentially get some.

We all thought Kyle Lohse was a moron for not signing by spring training, and he did alright for himself. Keep that in mind.

domtoretto
domtoretto

@Ed Yano  No they have their eye on Hanley Ramirez for next year.  They'll let Jeter finish out his last season, and then break the bank for Hanley who will be a free agent

stemog
stemog

@DIY Degree @stemogYeah, but Lohse is a No. 2 or No. 3 starting pitcher who was coming off two pretty good years. Pitching is always in demand whether it's November or June. Drew is good, but not outstanding. How much of a difference he's going to make is arguable, depending on the team. I really don't think Sandy has any intention of signing him.
