Ike Davis 10 (Baron)

Mets are not actively engaged in trade discussions involving Ike

Sandy Alderson said that the Mets are not that actively engaged in trade discussions involving Ike Davis (DiComo, Jan.9 ).

Earlier this week, Brewers GM Doug Melvin said he was still talking with the Mets about Davis, but the two sides had yet to see eye-to-eye on a deal (MLB.com, Jan. 7).

“We’ve been told by a variety of clubs that what we’re asking is not unrealistic,” Alderson said (DiComo, Jan. 9). “But if they think they can get it or something else for less, that’s what they’re going to try to do. So be it. It’s not like we’re holding out for Babe Ruth.”

In an effort to get a pitching prospect for Davis, the Mets have been shot down when asking the Pirates for RHP Nick Kingham (Perrotto, Dec. 17), the Brewers for RHP Tyler Thornburg (McCalvy, Dec. 1) the O’s for LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (Encina, Jan. 4).

Alderson and Davis spoke at David Wright’s recent wedding and the GM said the first baseman is “in a good mood.”

The Pirates waived Garrett Jones last month and he is better! We should pay someone to take him.

I wasn't convinced the first 176 times I read this re-hashed story....now with the 177th edition, I am now sold: the mets aren't getting a top pitching prospect for ike. Thank you for clarifying this for me.

code breaking: No one wanted him without a player that is actually good.

I still believe Ike will return to his fom from 10-12....too much talent, he deserves one more shot

I just don't understand why Sandy is so bent on shooting for the moon here.  I'd be more than content with any of the following deals:

Pirates: Tony Sanchez C or Barrett Barnes OF

Orioles: Jonathan Schoop 2b or Branden Kline RHP

Brewers: Tyrone Taylor OF or Hunter Morris 1b

The point is, there ARE other options out there besides just the guys we keep hearing about and if Sandy wasn't so dead set on hosing the other team in every deal, Ike would be out the door already. Go get Schoop and get it done already.

"the Mets are 'not that actively engaged in trade discussions involving Ike Davis.'”

But they'd like to be.

Translation: We over-valued Davis and the interested teams found solutions elsewhere.

This gives Ike an opportunity to show something to the teams out there. I hope he is succeeds in getting traded and starts somewhere fresh because he has no place with the Mets.

How can they bring Davis back at this point?  They've more or less made it public knowledge that they have been trying to dump him since Halloween.  What does that say to Davis, the rest of the team, the fanbase, etc if you bring him back?

How do you go into a season where you've told fans it was the start of something towards the positive for all these years and have either Ike who's had his struggles or Duda be in competition for the 1b job. This just has disaster written all over it as both have shown they are not quality 1b on a consistent basis. Plus they still haven't fixed SS which is a concern and add to that the unknown production from catcher/center field/Left Field (I'm pretty sure Granderson will be ok in RF if he stays healthy but he was injured) so at this point mets fans can be pretty confident in 3b/2b/maybe RF heading into 2014 and who knows about the rest (which is typical mets baseball).

Rotation: hopefully colon is close to his 2013 numbers hopefully Gee pitches well again as does Niese and maybe Wheeler takes a stop up and becomes a consistent starter and maybe mejia as number 5 until the prospects come up.

Bullpen: Parnell hopefully returns to form after injury as closer, V. Black steps up as do the other young guys, I guess rice is the left but another lefty and veteran bullpen w/ experience closing is needed.

I'm interested to see how the ??? marks end up performing because if they step up and play well obviously this team looks a whole lot better but if they fail and underachieve mets could be in worse shape than last year or at the very least have a similar year.

Sandy and the WIlpons still need to step up and help this team get over the hump, we should be focusing on championships right now, not reaching the .500 mark. It's been to long and too much losing/negative energy around this team.

Ive always liked the idea of trading Ike and leaving Duda at first to build confidence..but with what they were asking for Id rather have Ike on the team unless we were trading for an elite reliever or pitching prospect. Ike has way to much upside to trade for mid-tier players, unless it was for more than one..meaning a reliever and a middle infielder..that wouldve been perfect, but with the two veterans in Young And Granderson..i feel comfortable playing Ike in the 5 or 6 hole and let him build confidence..i think he had way to much pressure to produce behind David.

@Victor Trigueroliars indeed, this team will not compete with exactly the same infield, the two albatrosses will return!

@Hodges14 Ike will be getting paid about 4 mill. Do you really think he gives a flying $%$% what the mets are trying to say? The rest of the team is getting paid too, so they don't care....and what does it matter what fans think? You are looking too deeply into this bro....the people who it actually affects do not care one way or the other.

@Hodges14 It says you better produce and in the meantime Ike, man-up and do your job. I suspect he will. :)

@mike23 Just curious, who could they get to play 1st or SS? Is there really anyone out there that can be signed? If not, who or what are you giving up to get them?

@mike23 They haven't done enough this winter to become contenders for a wildcard spot.  They need at least 1 more bat, a SS and some bullpen help.  Getting Colon and Granderson was a great start to the offseason but they need to do more.

@Ryan E FeuersteinAlderson and Davis spoke at David Wright’s recent wedding and the GM said the first baseman is “in a good mood.”.. how about this. Sandy spoke to Ike while both were attending David's wedding. He felt that Ike was in good spirits...any better????

@Chris Cocaa Sandy has overplayed his hand with Davis.  He's a long shot to be a decent player, and no team is going to give a sure-thing young pitcher for him.  If Sandy expects a Duda/Satin platoon to have a far higher OPS than Davis, you might as well let Davis go for whatever you can get for him.  We can't have this many first basemen on the roster.

@Chris Cocaa I think Duda has had more of a vote of confidence up to this point in his career than he deserves.  I'm not in love with Ike Davis at first, but if we're gonna replace him with someone, it sure has hell should be someone better than Lucas Duda.

@rubiconx0 @Shawn M. Milburn How would be be a cancer? Nowhere has it been reported that he is bad in the clubhouse. If he sucks, you cut him, demote him. They won't let him get to July if he has a bad start.  They will just put Duda in the lineup.

Man up? He has a life debilitating life long illness why won't anyone acknowledge that? It's very possible he could go into spring and do well against rusty pitchers with guaranteed roster spots or minor leaguers but when the game speeds up he will be ridiculously overmatched all over again. no team will touch Davis with a ten foot pole and all the professional opinions don't favor him either, but for whatever reason a large group of Met fans completely forgot what torture it was to watch him at the plate; it looked like joe shmo at a fantasy camp batting against Kershaw.

@madhooks@mike23@Hodges14Well Drew for SS is an upgrade if he can be had on a short term (1 or 2 yrs) deal i'd be happy.

1st base there weren't any this year.

I'm more bullish on this team than most. I think the 1 more bat will come from TDA. I think CY will show-up and be solid.

BP is one thinkn i'm not all that worried about but they could use a vet or 2 to eat up some innings early on.

First base is open...it's not Davis' s to lose. Duda's numbers as a first baseman are very good and he has never been given any "votes of confidence" there, he only has been allowed to fill in when golden boy Davis was hurt or FINALLY sent down after excruciating performance. Anytine you hear professionals speak about the two of them they always prefer Duda why do you Davis supporters insist you know better? It drives me nuts.
