Jon Niese 2 (Baron)

Jon Niese left game with elbow discomfort, back to NY for MRI

Jon Niese left Sunday’s start in Florida with elbow discomfort. He is heading back to New York for an MRI (Puma, March 16).

Niese pitched two innings before coming out of the game on Sunday. The pain is near the back of his elbow, not near his forearm, which could lead to Tommy John surgery (Rubin, March 16).

“It’s the back of the elbow, which is good,” Niese said. “I’m almost 100 percent sure it’s nothing serious like Tommy John or anything. It’s just a little discomfort. I wanted to go back out there. It’s something that I could definitely pitch through.

This is Niese’s second MRI this spring, after complaining of triceps pain and “dead arm” earlier this spring training.

Man, with the freaking starters getting hurt, STOP!

Oh good lord! Are the Mets the most wimpy guys there are or what?

It seems that Niese is always getting hurt......wonder why? Looks like Detroit will sign Drew...again the Mets showing no sense of urgency with this glaring hole we have at SS. If Detroit sigs Drew if just goes to show why they are a winner and we are always saying wait till next year. Still scouting Franklin....what are they waiting for......it is what It is....He's not going to become Derek Jeter all of a sudden. Where is the sense of urgency with this team??? David Wright is not getting younger.....

If it is just discomfort, they should consider leaving him in Fla. to build up the arm. He was never a flame thrower, but his velocity is down and his offspeed stuff needs more time. No sense racing him North with the cold weather and his cranky arm. Start with Lannan and when he is ready bring him up and move Lannan to the pen.

If it is more...Hello John Lannan!

Here we go again. I am so, glad that we have the best doctors on the Mets.

Niese has been a huge question mark heading into every season for the NY Mets. Either these MRI machines are not picking up something since he already had an MRI just a month ago or this guy doesn't have a high tolerance for any sort of discomfort.

3/5ths of our starting rotation from last year having TJ Surgery. Something is wrong with the way the Mets treat their arms

I say if he's ok and he pitches ok trade the guy for a legit Bat this season

When he gets up to New York maybe they should take him to the hospital in a "Wambulance".

I say DL Niese forever and give Matz the spot.

He got an MRI not even a month ago and doctors told him he was fine.  I think this is all totally mental at this point.  Wheeler should be the opening day started if this guy is going to continue being a head case.

Are Mets fans in agreement that we are about 2015 bc of Harvey's injury plus Thor entering a full year? Okay so then how do we not let every possible young arm showcase their talent this season? How can we possibly go with Colon Lannan and Dice-K to start the year? And possibly not even let Flores prove his bat to an AL team. This is A$$ backwards!!!

I agree Niese is very brittle. The Mets should not count on him anymore.

If Niese is hurt Montero NEEDS to be in the starting rotation, its time to stop playing favoritism with players and reward the ones who perform. Montero was ready for the big show last year, he's more than ready now. Now let him go out and prove it like he has at every level.

If Niese shows he is healthy at the beginning of the season, trading him is not a bad idea.

He has only averaged 166 IP per season the last 4 years and is a .500 career pitcher with an adjusted ERA slightly below the league average and an average WAR the last 4 years of just over 1.

I would trade him for a promising young position player if given the chance.

It's okay. If Jon Niese starts the season on the disabled list, he'll be replaced in the rotation by Whoeverz Cheapest.

Whats going to happen with Brown, he's been good this spring

Doesn't sound like that serious an injury, at least according to Niese.  Let's wait and see before we all start jumping to conclusions.

5-3 Cubs, Mets are coming, Brown with a 2 run shot

We would have behave a lefty if Niese can't do it, so it will have to be Lannan.

Wheeler, Gee, Colon, x, x? Lannan & Mejia? They'd cut their throats before letting Syndergaard make the team out of spring training.

Mets had 19 hits vs StL today and Tejada went 0-4. But he did pick up yet another error. For those scoring at home that's 4E's and 2H's for Tejada this spring, well on track to live down to my prediction of more E's than H's, yet still he'll be the Met's starting SS.

Anthony Schifano

Knowing his injury history, he was the guy to trade when we had the chance. I don't care about the whole lefty in the rotation crap. He's fragile.

Steven Desai

@ponzies86  How can you trade for a legit bat if Niese is always going to get hurt? It only hurts his trade value and doubt the Mets get a impact bat back in return.

chasesimms

Nah.   The Mets don't have any needs.  They're all set at every position and are positioned to be a offensive power this season.

@Brian Webster  Im done with Tejada please put anyone at SS right now, Just give the job to Flores already or trade Mejia and someone else for a legit SS

@Anthony Schifano  I said this 2 years ago, this guy is injury prone.  When his value was high and in trade talks teams were asking for him we should have let him go.  I have never seen anything special about him to hold on so long.

Andrew Sodergren

@ponzies86 @Victor TrigueroThink Lagares would actually be a better option than EYJr. at SS. At least SS is Lagares' natural position. Granted, he wasn't very good there. Just commenting because I don't think EY has ever played SS in his pro career.

Anthony Schifano

Do not want Drew either. Prefer Franklin, Owings, or Gregorious.

Anthony Schifano
Anthony Schifano

His value was high. Teams were asking for him. He was a young lefty under contract. I haven't seen a thing from him that has impressed me all that much over these years. Why you have to call people names for having opinions is beyond me. This is a blog for fans to discuss the team. But I guess you are the smartest one out of all of us since we're morons. I guess you are the person that know everything, so I guess I am sorry for questioning you, your hieness.
