Ike Davis

Ike Davis trade rumors: Mets still listening, less teams interested

The Mets continue to talk with teams interested in trading for Ike Davis, Sandy Alderson told reporters Tuesday at Citi Field.

“We’re still talking with a number of teams,” he added. “I can’t say anything will happen.”

4:02 pm: The Pirates are interested in Davis and Mitch Moreland (Heyman).

According to Alderson, there are fewer teams interested today than at other points this winter, mostly because those teams may have secured an alternative and/or are no longer in the market for a first baseman.

The Astros, Brewers, and Pirates are all looking to acquire a first baseman (Rosenthal, Dec. 15), and they have all reportedly shown interest in Davis this winter. However, the Rangers are also shopping Moreland, the Blue Jays are shopping 1B Adam Lind, and the Mariners could look to move 1B Justin Smoakleaving the market saturated with underachieving first basemen (Rosenthal, Dec. 15).

Would anyone be upset with Jeff Locke for Ike Davis?

FEWER TEAMS ARE INTERESTED. NOT "LESS".... FEWER! YOU PEOPLE CAN'T WRITE!!!!!!

The thing that disgust me most about this whole thing is that our fans would rather us pay Ike 4 million to suck, than for him to go to another team and succeed, or to let Duda play 1B and have success.  The whole view is just flat out idiotic.  DAVIS CANNOT HIT THE BALL AT CITI FIELD.  Why can't anyone understand this.  Has no one taken the time to look at his home/road splits?

I could see

Trade Ike for Brandon Kintzler or Jim Henderson

Also either Sign Stephen Drew to a 3 yr deal or trade Flores who does not have a position on this team, he's a 3b, to the dodgers for SS Dee Gordon

Also sign either Johan, DiceK, Mulder or Zito to a minor league deal to be the 5th starter and lets go..

If they trade ike, barring a signing of like Kendro Morales or something, send Duda to the minors, he has an option left and put ey at 2b and Murphy at 1b so the Lageras fan club can have their man in cf.

"Fewer teams interested." I know that this site is a blog, but let's attempt proper grammar.

Davis ,Duda , Satin all suck! Put Flores at 1st everyday_ Problem solved.

Ha ha ha. Clowns. Let Ike, Duda, Satin, Flores fight for the opportunity like a bucket of crabs in the sun. Wait a minute. What's that smell? Is that the bucket, or the latest trade offer for Ike Davis? Clowns. They're always overvaluing their own players.

IMO Ike will not be traded now, Duda will start in AAA, Satin will play 1B against lefties, Murphy at 2B, Flores to backup Murph, Tejada at short, Tovar backs Tejada, Young, Lagares, Grandy in OF, EYjr is.the 4th man. Lineup looks like:

Tejada

Young

Murphy

Wright

Grandy

TD

IKE

Lagares

It looks like this is what we have.

Mark my words, Ike will turn into a home-run bashing, slick fielding gold glove 1st basemen the second he puts on another uniform. The guy is textbook for need a change of scenery. Another team can probably have him for a bag o' balls. If I'm some other team, I'd take a marker on him in a second.

Not a bad thing if we still have him, would be a nice trade for SS

I can liv ewith giving Ike antother shot. The Mets have nothing to lose with giving him one more chance and having him fight it out with Lucas for a job. If Ike succeeds and duplicates his 30 hr/ 90 rbi performance awesome. If not there is no harm in just sending him to the minors.

Best case scenario Ike/Duda compete and they push each other to be better and then we can get a higher value from one of them.

At first, I felt bad for Ike.  Then, his complaining to the umpire, flailing at breaking pitches and watching strikes down the heart of the plate changed my opinion.  Maybe it's the coaching staff, maybe it's him.  One thing for sure, we can't have almost no production from1st base.

BigAl831

Okay this is so off topic but I just watched highlights from Johans no hitter and what an amazing game.  The guy got a lot of hate because things just didn't work out health wise, but what a competitor.  Loved watching him on the mound and I'm so glad Johan was the guy that threw one first.

@metfan9876 No way in hell we get Locke for Davis.  I would prefer we get Lambo, but that is just me not being realistic.  Some AAA    RP  is what we can expect.

OMG I'd make a shrine to Sandy If that happened! It'd take more than Davis? though.

Duda had an .810 OPS against righties last year. Don't know why everyone thinks he's as awful as they say

@dexxBut HoJo thinks he can fix him.  Isn't it great when a career first ball fastball hitter thinks he can really be a hitting coach.

@Sean Matrai That's worse than last years team.

Tejada < Q

Murphy=Murphy

Wright=Wright

Granderson=Byrd

TDA =  Buck

Young < Young

Davis < Duda

Lagares = Lagares

Unless Tejada has been radically motivated by fat camp, then we have the worst starting SS in the league.  Hopefully Granderson replaces Byrd's production, but its no guarantee, and most likely won't happen.  TDA might match Buck's production, could be slightly better, could be way worse.  C. Young might replace EY2 's value, but EY put up a 1.7 WAR after being traded to the Mets.  Its a good chance that CY doesn't give us that.  If Davis is at 1B, then we have the worst starting 1B in the league.  Sandy is not dumb enough to let him play 1B again, especially when he has a better option in Duda.

@anthony G. Decesare Dee Gordan has been a mess the past couple years. Drew is only 30 right now so to sign him to a 3 year deal would be great. All of a sudden you start to see a baseball team. Flores on the other hand if you dont sign drew I would include him in a package to AZ or one of their SS or if ike gets traded, go into spring training with the idea that murphy or Flores starts at 1st or second

@losmets86 You better hope we can find some sucker to take him off our hands

It's great to hear that there are no takers for Ike. I hope the Mets hold on to him and give him a chance because I still believe he can be a star in this league. But this is the last season. He needs to be serviceable, at least. Like what Morneau did last season- that would be acceptable. League-average production- say .260/.340/.450, 20 homers- would be good, especially since he's not likely to bat higher than 5th or 6th.

@bigdirty Ike & Duda competed last season and Duda already won.

Hodges14

@bigdirty Ike's 30/90 performance was pretty overblown.  He produced a very pedestrian .771 OPS and a 0.9 WAR that season.  I get it that everyone was thrilled to see him hit 32HRs that year but really that was about it in the highlight dept for Davis.

dexx
dexx

@niesesnose Exactly, and it was over .900 vs RHP before he strained his oblique in late June.

How many major league homeruns (or hits, for that matter) do Hudgens or Alderson have?

flmetsfan

@metstastic@losmets86So we pay them both $6M to basically be a two player left handed platoon on first base.  Cool, they can alternate against right handed pitching.

Way to fall in love with your so so prospects.

losmets86
losmets86

@metstastic @losmets86 If they don"t trade IKE and he bombs out, they will be paying him $4M to sit in Vegas.  Pittsburgh, Brewers and Astros are not giving the Mets anybody solid and Sandy said he was not giving IKE away for little in return.  It is a quandary!  At 1B,  the Mets have underachieving spare parts that no one wants!  On top of that we have to pay IKE and DUDA arb. to do very little.

@Hodges14 @bigdirty I would love someone with time on their hands to do a statistical analysis of the counts and pitches he homered on that year. He seemed to always be batting with a couple of guys on in front of him when a pitcher had to challenge him with fastballs. Last year they simply wouldn't give in no matter what the count, and he couldn't adjust.

I just don't see Ike consistently being able to hit breaking pitches with his swing the way it is...too much going on mechanically. He commits to pitches so early that his entire lower body is gone before the ball ever reaches the plate. That's not something that gets corrected by coming out of a slump...it's something that gets corrected by throwing what you think you know out the window and starting from scratch. He doesn't seem to have the kind of humility to do that on his own.

@hrvwlzthor@dexx@Sean Matrai Grandy is the better player, no doubt about it, but I wouldn't be surprised if Grandy's 2014 is not as good as Byrd's 2013.  Byrd put up a 3.5 WAR in 2/3 of a season with the Mets.  Grandy would have to be outstanding to equal that.

hrvwlzthor
hrvwlzthor

@dexx @Sean Matrai You are kidding right saying that Grandy = Byrd. Grandy is younger, a better hitter and defender than Byrd and most importantly he PROVIDES PROTECTION FOR WRIGHT!!! Byrd provided zero protection for Wright. I don't care if Byrd hit 40 HR's last year, no pitcher in the world would rather pitch to Wright than Byrd. Grandy's most important asset to this team is so Wright can finally get some pitches to hit. He's a power lefty that right handed pitchers will be hesitant to pitch to so then Wright will get better pitches to hit.

@flmetsfan Honestly we should've traded Ike after the 2011 season in which Duda hit .291 /.370/.482 for the year in over 300 plate appearances.  They had to know Ike was never gonna put up a line like that with his swing.  Even though Ike was injured the whole season in 2011, he still would've had more value that he has now, and you wouldn't have messed up Duda by moving him to RF in a park that you need to CFs to cover CF & RF.  Duda would be one of the top 1B in baseball now, and we could've traded Ike for a young OF prospect, and not had to spend $22 million of our $35 million budget on OFers.

dexx
dexx

@losmets86@metstastic He won't be sitting in Vegas.  He's out of options.  He will be released.  So I don't see any chance the Mets bring him to spring training.  I think they will just move him for a reliever if they have to, but he isn't starting 2014 with the Mets

Zach Ripple
Zach Ripple

This isn't a statistical analysis, but here's what I know from watching almost every Mets game in its entirety the past several years:

In 2012, even in that first half where he struggled, Ike put up nice RBI numbers because I believe he had more multi-run homers than anyone. I remember SNY broadcasting that statistic routinely during games. However, he wasn't much better than his first half of 2013, although his swing and stance were far more out of wack this season than last.

Opposing pitchers know Ike can hit for power, but he was chasing everything. Once he came back to the Majors, he laid off a ton more pitches and in turn drew a ton of walks because pitchers wouldn't give in. His swing was better, although he didn't exactly go on a tear or a power surge when he was back. However, if he continues to draw walks, pitchers will eventually have to give in, and that's where his overall numbers will benefit. It all starts with not expanding the strike zone.

dexx
dexx

@md92468 They also figured out that he can't hit the ball the other way with any power.  He is a singles hitter now, because he is going to pitches on the outside part of the plate all the time.  The reason he had the big 2nd half in 2012 is because we were down 10-0 most games because we had no pitching and were the worst team in baseball in the 2nd half.  Pitchers weren't worried about him hitting a HR because we were down 10.  The goal was to throw strikes and not walk anyone because the AAA guys were being called up late in the season.  He can hit AAA pitching.

dexx
dexx

@harvey33 No.  He can hit HRs OR he can get on base.  The year he hit 32, which is the only season he has had more than 19, he had a .305 OBP.  He can do one or the other.  Ike has to sell out on all the other traits to hit HRs.
