Ike Davis

Ike Davis rumors: Pirates interested, Mets want big arm

The Pirates have recently talked to the Mets about acquiring 1B Ike Davis, a source said (Sawchik, Dec. 17).

Sandy Alderson said Tuesday that he has continued talking with teams about Davis, though there is less interest today than at other points this winter.

The Pirates are looking to acquire a left-handed-hitting first baseman to complement 1B Gaby Sanchez (Olney). They are reportedly also interested in Rangers 1B Mitch Moreland (Heyman, Dec. 17). However, Brewers GM Doug Melvin recently said, last he checked, the Rangers were not trading Moreland (Haudricourt, Dec. 17). The Brewers have also reportedly shown interest in Davis.

In return for Davis, the Mets are said to be seeking for a hard-throwing pitching prospect, such as Nick Kingham (Perrotto, Dec. 17), who was Pittsburgh’s third-best pitching prospect, according to Baseball America. Alderson reportedly asked the Brewers for RHP Tyler Thornburg (McCalvy, Dec. 11Duquette, Dec. 10), but he is set to be Milwaukee’s fifth starter (Haudricourt, Dec. 12).

we have enough pitching, need to trade him for a bat

If Sandy could get an arm like Klingman for Ike, I'd be impressed!  Maybe he can pull it off.  It would be similar to his Beltran trade, when he didn't settle for any deal out there and netted The Wheel.

Pitt has a SS prospect named Alen Hanson, .292 BA, 151 XBH, 183 RBI and 109 SB. He is the #40 in the top 100, #3 in the Pitt org., #6 SS in the Top 10. This is the guy we should be going after! It may take more than Ike to get him.

Why on Earth would Pitt trade it's third best pitching prospect or Mil trade it's fifth starter for Ike Davis?

If Davis was on another team, would you trade a Montero or a Gee or Meija for him?

Hardly. Davis, is at best a hitter who hits HRs, doesn't hit for average and doesn't hit lefties. Honestly, I don;t think he's worth all that much.

Let us get a new owner and just spend $240M inc luxury tax... On each year salary roll..

Who cares about the sport, NY wants a winner...

Sandy will take years to win...

We want it now!

Can't we get an offensive prospect.  The organization has been stockpiling pitching to the detriment of position prospects.

I rather if Ike has to be traded go to the Pirates vs the Brewers. I am a fan of Ike even with some negatisms he too me will be decent . I think Clint Hurdle a very good hitting coach when he did not manage he can fix what the Mets have not yet done enough. I understand blame goes to both the player and the organization. I do believe the team is not doing enough to help him vs discarding him.  I am fine with Murphy moving to first to get EY Jr into the lineup if the other Young,, Lagares and Grandy in the OF. so as long as its not Duda i am fine.

Trade Ike to the Pirates and then trade Duda to the Brewers. Give Flores the 1B position and then sign Drew for SS

As a Pirate fan I am intrigued by the upside of Ike but seems the pirates are viewing him as a platoon player so not so sure how much they would really be willing to give up. Locke would make some sense

I think Sandy is trying to get a top prospect arm for Ike because the plan is to package one of our top pitching prospects for an impact player.... Possibly the SS everyone wants?

Ike is a salary dump. I know it. You know it. But it has been kept a secret from 29 MLB GM's - not.  The Mets are trying to save 4M.  Teams will not be offering them a premium player for salary relief.

@ifti99 I agree with your points. Doesn't make sense to me either. But maybe Bucs are prioritizing power, and there is a scarcity of power thru the game. The Angels got Skaggs (probably the second best Arizona prospect arm after Bradley) & Ramirez (a fringy #5) for a guy who will only contribute in the power category and will likely be a disaster in left field for the Snakes. Arizona also gave Chi Eaton in that weird (for the Snakes) trade.

I'd be impressed if Sandy could get this deal done. More realistically, I think he Bucs will offer a lesser SP prospect. But maybe we can add to our part of the swap.

@David Roth The organization appears to know how to develop pitchers.  Maybe the coaching down in the minors is good for pitchers.  There is no sign they can develop position players.  So maybe like Tampa, develop tons of pitchers and trade them for hitters when they hit full value.  I like stockpiling pitching if that's the plan.

What trade should we make?

Syndergaard, DeGomm and Montero but for who?

Cargo?

@Paul Tarsney

There is nothing wrong with aiming high. I just hope he doesn't turn teams off and they break off talks altogether.

I just want Ike gone. I'm sure Sandy is talking Ike up and going on about his 30 HR potential. Keep selling that change of scenery, Sandy.

And he might get it to.

@Ron Davis I'd like EY2 at second but in a platoon situation. EY2 vs lefties; he's a much stronger batter from the right side.

@Ron Davis
As you imply, I wonder if the Mets push an organizational philosophy of hitting to a harmful extreme, failing to recognize when a young player's strengths simply don't match up with that philosophy.

Or as David Ortiz said about his time in the Twins' org, "They wanted me to hit like a little b**ch."

ken1010
ken1010

@Mont5 I think that would be great.  That said, Drew is probably over-rated and a shortstop by trade could be better.

@Patrick Fromholz I agree, but I also think there's also a financial piece to this - freeing up salary to sign a guy like Morales...

bobbysf

@Agee's Catch Ike a salary dump only if he'd been producing something more than less than replacement player value.

xgamblorx
xgamblorx

@Agee's Catch Teams will not offer a premium player for a guy who was replacement-level next season. But I guess it depends on your definition of "premium". A guy in the bottom part of another org's top 10 is reasonable.

@Agee's Catch Fudge! (You know what I really mean!)

Pathetic lie then right from the beginning, how they said they will absolutely demand high value in a trade concerning Ike...all lies.

Ike, Parnell, Matz and Tovar for Hanson and Klingman.

@gothamsane Good point. No rush at all. Sandy is not working on the 2014 timetable, whether Metsblog likes it or not.

ken1010
ken1010

@gothamsane No rush today.

But Sandy's approach reminds me of the Mets organizational hitting philosophy.  Take pitches until you get the perfect one to hit.  The problem here, though, is that there are no walks in trade talks.

ken1010
ken1010

@Mont5 Ike is not Beltran or Dickey coming off a Cy Young.  I expect he can get a high-potential but risky pitcher, great stuff but no control, who hasn't put it together yet, which is parallel to Ike.

Or they need to find someone with a hitting coach who is sure they can fix Ike.

As long as they are comfortable with Ike coming back, Sandy can hold out for something great.  But I agree that at this point he is asking for too much, probably just in case it works.

@strato @Ron Davis The more appropriate question is whether this is former MLB hurler Ron Davis, Ike's father.

@strato @Ron Davis Leave Ron alone.  We know what he meant.  He's been posting here for a long time and he's never disrespectful to anyone.

@David Roth@Mont5Nothing wrong with 3 years.  Colon got 2 years.  Granderson got 4 years.  Doesn't this fit Sandy's model of staggering contracts for payroll flexibility?

Mont5

Yes offer 30 Mil for 3 years. I will not add a No Trade Clause to his contract. The Mets could always trade him down the road. .

He is more awesome in the postseason!

Mont5

I will give him 30Mil for 3 years.

Mont5
Mont5

By getting rid of Ike & Duda the Mets will save 4 Mil which means it will actually be 6 Mil for Drew.

Mont5
Mont5

I truly believe if they give Flores a shot on 1B that him alone will be able to hit better than Ike & Duda put together not to much on the power but Avg, Hits, OBP, Doubles, BB, RBI will all be better. Could see him hit 20 HR's

strato
strato

@Mont5 It's just considering the Mets' penny pinching ways, I don't think they should waste 30 million on Stephen Drew. They should get rid of Ike and Duda, and focus on getting more offense from the first base position. I still regard offense as their shortcoming, and they are not going to get a tremendous improvement in offense signing Drew.

Mont5
Mont5

I think Tejada days with the Mets are over is just like Ike. Those 2 players need a change of scenery. They both need to start over on new teams

strato
strato

@Mont5 Is Drew that big of an upgrade over the Tejada of 2 years ago? Maybe that's the guy he will be again. He's only 23.

Hodges14
Hodges14

@Agee's Catch @xgamblorx I'm just speculating here but I think one of the reasons for getting rid of Ike is to open up some payroll which could then be spent on Tejada's replacement.
