Ike Davis

Ike Davis Rumors: Brewers will move quick, Sandy & Melvin are talking

The Brewers intend to move quickly to get a first baseman (Haudricourt, Dec. 12), and they have interest in Ike Davis, as do the Rays (Martino, Dec. 11).

This morning, in the lobby while leaving the Winter Meetings, Mets GM Sandy Alderson and Brewers GM Doug Melvin were seen talking (Rubin, Dec. 12), leading to speculation that they were discussing Davis (Cotillo, Dec. 12).

The Brewers and Rays are also reportedly interested free-agent 1B James Loney, who is reportedly seeking a three-year deal. The team that doesn’t get him will probably end up acquiring Davis (Rubin, Dec. 11). The Pirates are less interested in Davis, but they are also pursuing Loney (Rubin, Dec. 11).

In talks for Davis, the Mets asked the Brewers for RHP Tyler Thornburg (McCalvy, Dec. 11Duquette, Dec. 10), but he is currently ticketed for Milwaukee’s fifth starter slot (Haudricourt, Dec. 12). The Rays may be willing to part with OF Matt Joyce for Davis (Topkin, Nov. 27).

Also on Wednesday, the Mariners acquired 1B Corey Hart and 1B Logan Morrison, which led to speculation they could push to move 1B Justin Smoak (Sherman, Dec. 11), which would could further complicate the market for Davis.

Sunday..and we still have Ike...and "yes" anyone who still thinks this guy is salvageable in blue-n-orange hasn't watched an inning the past two seasons...let some one else try and fix his stubborn, windmill mechanics.  He has played like he wants out.  His mental approach was just as stubborn.  He may it 15-20 HR's..great..as long as it is for so,e one else...take Matt Joyce if that is possible and SING FOR JOY!  From Milwaukee, take Bernie the Brewer, even the Brat costumes..they gotta have a decent AA arm who can help in the BP...an EZ Bake Oven,a lava lamp, maybe a dehumidifier for the clubhouse...anything.

Is Ike really that bad?  I don't know if any player available is better.

Is it crazy to throw Ben Zobrist out as a possible SS for next year? If we packaged someone with Ike - could he even play SS? Apparently he has some experience.

It don't matter what this team does. They'll still stink next year.

Don't be surprised if Colon after going 18-6 with Oakland goes 6-18 with Mets and Granderson turns into another Jason Bay.

Matt Joyce for Ike Davis? Seriously? Then again, I didn't think the Mets were serious about Colon.

So, after the Mets battle and somehow make the playoffs they will have to decide whether to shut down Wheeler, Syndergaard, Mejia, and Montero? Lol, I would think those guys would be important. Who starts the playoff games? Santana? DiceK? Harang!?!? Lol, I guess we should be so lucky, right.

Sandy has been very busy this off season. He's has made some excellent moves so far.

Obviously trading Ike for a pitcher would make no sense  ...well on second thought now that you signed a 40 year old pitcher/blob  2 years 20 mil ,needs insurance....smh

Considering it sounds like the Mets are no longer int he running for Drew, which is very disappointing, I'm wondering if the Mets try and trade for Thornberg and Braun somehow...Once again, I do not want any PED guys (which is why I hate Colon for age/shape + PED's and am expecting him to breakdown by July) and will stick to this no matter how "gifted" the player is.

Thank God we have Sandy.Without his RA and Beltran trade we would be lost. I'm often amazed at those that rip him and offer up trade scenarios like he can snap his fingers and make it happen. Bud Selig said we have to get the Mets back in the mix here so he sent in a big gun in Alderson. He's like the wolf in pulp fiction. I have full confidence in him.

In ref to ike potentially figuring it out somewhere else. That's exactly why Sandy hasnt taken the first offer.Imo he's telling GM's ike is a change of scenery guy and when he finds his swing again I have to get a return that will show its worth to my fanbase. He's telling them when this guy is the next Chris Davis, I better have something to show for it. Will he be, no one knows, but he has to negotiate and play hard ball.

i heard the mets sent a pitcher to the dodgers not to long ago?? who??

We really need a shortstop. If the rumors are true that Alderson is asking for a pitcher in return for Ike, then there has to be more moves on the way. I can't bear the thought of an infield with Duda and Tejada still in it. I love the other moves this offseason so I have confidence in Sandy.

Davis for Escobar makes the most sense for the Mets IMO. If the Rays are good at SS it may make sense. Wright, Escobar, Murphy, Duda/Satin/etc etc.............they likely find a cheap vet behind D'Arnaud. OF seems ok right now with Young, Lagares, E.Young, Granderson

Even if Ike does well somewhere else, that does not mean he would have figured it out in New York.

Why do I fear Ike becoming a monster for another team so much it makes my stomach ache??

My gut tells me Ike Davis is going to have a good next season. I still think the Valley Fever he caught caused his dismal season...learned some side effects could last as long as a year....and the year is up. .  I'll be following Davis next season to see if I am right.

I think the Mets dont like ikes attitude, the way he sulks and constantly argues with umps, I still think he has very good potential and dont want him traded, Sandy has been very aggressive trying to do this so its bound to happen, this move could  come back and bite the Mets.

@dabo I don't think I've heard any names that are that much of an improvement over Ike.  I don't think Duda is an improvement over a dead Mo Vaughn.  Satin is a good bench guy, he can play the corners in the outfield and first and has a good contact bat.  You could honestly keep all three and find a reason for Ike and Satin.

I'm going to give me some credit... this would be a brilliant move, folks.

@Bob Burket Don't be surprised if COlon goes 15-10 next year and Granderson hits .250 wuth 30 HRs. Do you have any stats to back up why Granderson becomes Bay or Colon magically becomes awful?

niesesnose

@MetFanSince68 That trade wouldn't make any sense. We already have a bunch of 4th OFs (Dekker, Brown, EY) and it wouldn't clear any salary as the two have about identical salaries.

@KMO82 I'd be THRILLED if Pelfrey were starting a playoff game for this team.

I still wonder who would have started Game 1 of the World Series in 2006. Steven Trachsel was a good possibility.

@KMO82 Why in the world are we already discussing whether or not certain players will be shut down IF we make the playoffs in 2014?? Where have you even read anything about Wheeler, or any of them for that matter, already having a cap on this season?

@Metropolitan - you can never have enough pitching.   I don't want to see Matsuzaka types filling out the roster.

The GM for the Brewers publicly stated that he is not trading Braun in an interview on MLB network yesterday. He said some (I believe he said three or four) GMs asked about him, but he turned them down. He said that it would not make sense trading Braun given the market they are in. He was very candid, and seemed to hint resentment at the "articles" written about Braun being a trade candidate...

metfan8669

@John Paul Cullinane - I am with you that I hate cheering for any PED guy.   But as far as him breaking down?  He just threw 190 innings last year.   I think he can give us 150+.  What do you think?

The RHP we took this morning in the rule 5 draft. We got cash back in the move. Check mets minor league blog.

@MetsFan1962 Yeah except he hit something like 27 HRs during the 2nd half of 2012, when he was in the midst of valley fever.  So, no.

@dreamer3kx I think you have a point. And the way he griped about getting called back up last year probably didn't sit so well either. There's no way for us to know, but I suspect there's something to your idea.

MetsFan1962
MetsFan1962

Sandy may read this blog and if he does, he got the impression the fanbase wanted Davis off the team. And, you are right, we don't know if Ike's behavior on and off the field is a factor for trading him. Can't blame the umps for his miserable season . .Ike is the guy holding and swinging the bat.

@rf04 Yea, the rays would ask for Wheeler or Thor. Zobrist put ups top 15 WAR most years.

were there any stats to back up why bay went from an mvp-candidate to one of the least productive hitters in the league? no, and yet it happened..to the mets, of course.

The Mets need another outfielder and  1b  SS more than they need a pitcher ,but when you make stupid risky move like Clownderson did he just creates another need that was not there previously! I rather Matsuzuka types especilly  for next year which is in reailty is  not going to be  making the playoffs anyway!

John Paul Cullinane
John Paul Cullinane

Taking aside my hatred for PED guys; I really believe that he will breakdown by July and you will never see him pitch again.  Yes, age is just a number, but unless you're a knuckleball pitcher, pitchers breakdown VERY quickly when they hit 40.  He will be 41 before July and he is in terrible shape.  PED's take time to leave your body.  Sure, he had a GREAT year last year...but I really worry about being another year removed from PED's, him being 41 in the middle of the season, and him being very overweight.  I am glad the Mets could spend $10 million, but I really wish it was on another player because of the above...

@hillsideav @thegolden1 Best way not to have seller remorse … trade Duda! Also, I think the Mets should sign Kendry Morales he might not be Keith Hernandez, but the bat is dependable. Also, MLBTraderumors says the market for him isn't that strong.

@MetsFan1962  Do you really think that SA is trading Ike because commenters on metsblog don't like him? C'mon, that is ridiculous.

@niesesnose @rf04 no way Wheeler gets traded for Zobrist.  The Mets come out behind in that deal.  Zobrist would be a nice fit in NY this year though.

rf04

@niesesnose @rf04 A versatile switch hitter with a great OBP might be worth Davis and a guy who's never pitched an MLB inning. I know we've said we're keeping our young arms - but it's something to think about. I assume Murphy & Ike would add too much payroll for them (plus not much long term control either).
